The officer gave a signal to Mr. Smith, and Williams was, by the invitation of Mr. Smith, taken to the porterhouso eorner of James and Chat! streets. Here the officer showed himself. Williams jous, and said he was going into the yard; but instead of returning, he ped over a ten foot fence, The officer, suspecting man@uvre, ran out of a side doorand caught him as he came from the alley. Said he to the officer, hat’s all this conspiracy mean against me?’ ‘‘No- thing much,” was the officer's reply, “only you must go to the Tombs with me.’ On their way to the Tombs the ‘oner whispered into the ear of the oificer, “Don’t tap to the Tombs; yon can make $30 out of me by taking me to the Navy Yard. I’m a deserter. But,” said he, “if you take me back they would not Iecep me there for two days.’ The following morning the officer conveyed Brown back to the | ship. Capt. Brooks then ordered the prisoner to be put in double irons. The yery next day Brown caused, through ‘an accomplice, a subpoena to be sent on board the ship, ealling bis attendance at the court in Brooklyn, as a wit- ness in a case of burglary. In obedience to the subpoena Brown was cent in charg? of a corporal and sentinel to the court. They remained there all day, and when the eourt adjourned; of course the prisoner’ had not been alled. ‘He then remarked to the corporal, ‘we shall haye ‘ come again to-morrow.” As they were returning baci to the ship Brown asked the Corporal’s permission to go into the yard of a porter house; the request was complied with; the corporal remaining in'the house, where he wait- ed for a long time; and as Brown did not’ make his ap- pearance the corporal searched the yard and then discov- exed that his prisoner had fled by jumping over the fence. Thie was the last heard or seen of Brown, until aboat ten days ago a carriage drove up to the residence of Mrs. Miller, situated in the upper part of the Bowery, when gut jumped Mr. Brown, and in great haste callel upon Mrs. Miller, representing himself to be Capt. McDonald, of the Philadelphia police. Said he: “ Mrs, Miller, I see Dy the newspapers, madam, you advertise the loss of your ehild. I have arrested an Englishwoman in our | City in whose possession I have found your child. On her baggage I found eleven hundred pounds sterling. She has ran away from England, and I have it the $500 reward offered for her arrest. The child, the description, T have not the least doubt, is yours.” | *Oh! dear me,” said the mother, with eyes full of tears, “what shall wo do, Captain’? "Well, said he, “you | must send some one on with me, on my return. Capt. McDonald was now’ the guest of the household, the best room was provided, and atthe usual hour they all retired to rest. But not so with the Captain; his restless nature prevented his sleep- ing until he first ascertained the contents of a trunk standing in his room. This he broke open, and dis- fitted him, covered anew suit of clothes which about and in addition there was $50 in money. The clothing he put on his person, and the money in his pocket, leay- his oldsuiton the chair; and in the dead of night, t the room, locked the door, and carried off the key. In the ‘morning the family were {up early, proposed an, excellent breakfast, and as their guest id not make his appearance, a messenger was sent to his room; the door was found to be locked; they. knocked and knocked; the family beeame alarmed; the door was forced open, and, to their utmost surprise, hey found that their guest had fled, leaving evidence Dekind that he was not only an impostor, but a robber We next hear of this swindling rogue in Albany, of ewhich we copy the following from the Albany Evenimg Adas:— A person arrived at the City Hotel on Saturda; neon, and registered himself as “John B, Bern: subsequently called the porter, and told him to obtain a horse and carriage for him, as he wished to “see the sights of the town,” The porter complied, and the ‘‘dis- | ished val’? took pogsession of the conveyance, drove around town, finally reining up at ee ry es- | tablishment of Williams &Co. Here he said he wished to purchase a lady’s gold watch. Quite a number were | shown him, when he altered his mind, and purchased a conple of gent’s gold watches—the most valuable ones in the stores fine gold neck chain, weighing some 92 @wts., worth about $32, and a large heavy ring, worth $12. After this he requested Mr. W. to have some one aceompany him to Governor Seymour’s, saying that the Governor was an intimate friend of his—that he designed making presents of the articles to some ladies visiting there, and that he would, upon their acceptance, cas! the bill. Mr. W. deputed ‘his son for the purpose, and they took the carriage and drove off. Before leaving however, he borrowed a quarter from Mr. W., to giv the little boy who was outside, holding his horse. In stead of Rar da Governor Seymour's, ‘he went to th yesidence of J. V.L. Pruyn, Esq., in El street, and yang the bell. The servant obeyed the summons, when the “gent” asked him if Mr. P. was at home. ‘The ser- vant replied in the negative, when be said he would up stairs into Mr. P.’s library—he being an inti- mate friend of his, and wishing to address a letter to him. The servant t him, (‘I will deliver your message to your servant. , “No: I wish to speak to him privately.” ‘went down to Mr. Williains’ son, who was patiently wait- for the cash, and to him, “RBy-the-bye, one thing I have forgotten; as my wife is here, I wish you seul tele ibo-casringe, gn beek to-tlis store’ ancl get for her one of your bost gold bracelets, set in with diamonds, and on your return here, I will then cash the biil in full.”? | Young Williams supposed no fraud was intended, took ‘the carriage and drove to the stor He related to his father what had taken place, when Mr. Williams be- eoming alarmed, made up his mind that he had been | — He immediately sent for an officer at the second station, after- | ” He who at once obeyed the summons, and accom- him to the residence of Mr. Pruyn. The lost that was seen of the rascal wos about 8 o'clock last evening, in De Witt street, when he ame across one Mr. McCaffrey, and at ouce entered into conversation with him, (thongh an entire stranger.) rep: yesenting that he was a brother countryman of hfs, and asked him if he would have the kindness to loan him his ap and coat, as he merely wished to play a trick upon a lady ‘of whom he was enamored. At first Mr. demurred, but finally consented to exchange with him, which was accordingly done. Mr. McC., after for an hour for him, making up his mind that he was taken in and done for, (though he had, by far, the best of the bargain,) gave notice to the police of the Third district, but too late to accomplish his arrest. This, certainly, is considered one of the most daring, reckless, swindling operations that has for many years taken place in this city or any other. It is looked upon as unparalleled in police annals, It evidently shows the tor to be an adroit and successful ‘thief, and one posted up in his nefarious business. The police are stilt on the alert, and are confident, ere long, that this uring scoundrel will be arrested, and justice meted out to him. Among the different aliases assumed by him are ‘the ones below: ‘ it. Hart, of H. B, M,’s service, sta- tioned at Halifax;’” * Monsell,”” and ‘* ScClellan,””’ and “Bernard.’? The following note was found yesterday morning, by officer Bonahan, in Patroon street, which supposed to have been written by ‘Bernard’ at Prayn’s, ‘and dropped by him to mislead the police:— My Duan Mowox11—Drop mo a line with your advice, ia allhbaste. Iam, respectfully, & ° JOHN B. ADAMS, Troy. ‘The same authority gives the following account of his arrest:—The man noticed by us yesterday as succeedi in one of the most adroit swindles, was arrested on boar ‘the steamboat Isaac Newton, early on Sunday morning, under the following circumstances: After strolling abow' this city for an hour or more, and dropping in various 8 to drink—to and from which places he waa traced police—he made his way to the Isaac Newton, just as she was leaving the wharf. He jumped aboard and the boat pushed off. He was then safely and securely out of the reach of our police. As we stated yesterday, he had swapped his cont and hat with an Irishman ia the street, for the purpose of procuring such as woull dis- guise and assist him in eluding the police, The change ‘of dress would do well enongh for him to leave Albany with, but it was not exactly the thing for Lim to make his entrance into the city of New York with. He there- fore stole a hat from a fellow passenger; but being limit- ed in territorial habitation, he was unable to elude detection, and the owner soon overhauled him. He indig- nantly repelied the charge, but the owner insisted. Tho consequence was a dispute which brought the officers of the boat to the scene, who took the thief in cbarge, and on searching him, found in his possession the watches. chain and ring obtained from Messrs.
