SPROLAL CORRESPONDENCS OF THE NEW YORK HERALD. Aupany, March 27, 1854 ‘The opponents of the stringent Temperance bill which | has passed through both branches of the Legislature are to have an opportunity at the next election of ox- | pressing their opinion upon it ; and #0 they should. | Senator Dickinson introduced a bill this morning making provision for obtaining a fair and decided exprgsaion of public opinion whether the people desire the prdfilibitory | liquor law or not. In the House, after the reading of the journal of Satur. day, Mr. Loriet rose toa question of privilege, and atated that in ono of the morning papers was published a report of the proceedings of the Assembly when sitting with closed doors on Saturday, The Speaker replied, that to report those proceedidgs was strictly out of order, for | the fact of closing the doors was a sufficient indicetion that the transactions ought to be kept seerct. Mr. Poters hoped no further proceedings would be had in relation to the matter, and it wasaccordingly dropped. Mr. Benedict rose to a question of privilege. He under- stood that he stood in contempt of the House for being absent on Saturday upon the call of the House. The Speaker answered in the affirmative, and asked the gon- tleman what excuse he had to offer? Mr. B. replied by stating, that at or near 12 o'clock on that day he received notice that a note, upon which he was.an indorser, was |}! ikely to be protested, and his absence was occasioned: by being compelled 'to leave the House at short notice | “’ to attend to it. The bill was opposed by members from both counties and Cattaraugus, but no question was ta- ken. Next to the Suckett’s Harbor railroad swindle, this project has supported the largest and most dexterous lobby during the entire session. The purpose is to make Horneliaville the county seat, and property holders there are urging the bill to the extent of their power. It looks now as if they would succeed, and there are some sound reasona in their favor. But there’s no telling. ‘The Attorney General has been instructed to inform the House what power the Legislature has to gran‘ ferry privileges between this State and Canada.
