Lady Gay Spanker, Mr. E. Booth as Dazzle, Mr. T. D. Green as Sir Harcourt, Mrs. Booth as Grace Harkawey, Mr. Anderson as Max, Mr. Thompson ds Dolly Spanker, and Mr. Rand as Charles Courtly. When Mua. Sinclair entered as Lady Gay Spanker, the Chief Ea- gtocer, Mr. Duane, arose in the parquette and proposed three cheers for that lady, and the cheers were given wath hearty good will by theaudience. At the end of the act Mrs. Sinclair was called before the curtain, and, when the applause had subsided, addressed the audience ag fellows :— Ladies and Gentlemen—Permit me to express to you my deep and heartfelt gratification at bevolding the Hril- Mant assemblage which graces these walls to-night—and to express it to you, not only on my own behalf, bat on seat of the a ies and gentlemen who have assisted at represent Tam requested likewise to add, mt the name of the members of the Fire Department, for the generous manner in which the citizens of San I'rancis. eo have responded to our call in aid of the charitable en- @eavors of that noble body of men to whom we are in- Gebted for the safety of our lives and property, and whom all Califernians delight to honor. She was enthusiastically cheered at the close of her re- waarks, and cheer after cheer followed for the principal artiste who had appeared during the evening, and after- wards for Governor Foote and General Wool, who were seen ina private box. The entertainment closed with the pas de quatre, from ‘Les Follies,” by the Milea. Rousset. ‘Thorne’s Adelphi was still open, but we presume that “Uncle Tom's Cabin” did not draw, as it was taken from the bills ‘after the first week. The Backus Minstrels oc- eupied San Francisco Hall. The Monplaisir troupe—M. Monphaisir, Mme. Monplaisir, M. Espinoza and Mme. ‘Thierry—had appeared at the Metropolitan. They created mo furore, the Californians thinking them no better than the Roussets. ‘The new version, in eight tableaux, of ‘The Corsican Brothers,” from Dumas’ work, has been a failure at Drury Lanetheatre, London. Brooke and Mead, as the twin bro- ‘thers, acted very well. The piece was expensively got up, but is too heavy to be popular. At the Strand theatre, ‘hore is a new and clever burlesque, called ‘The Corko- fan Brothers,’’ the heroes of which are two Irish bro- ‘thers, one living in Cork and the other in London. George Hudson personates the twins. Meyerbeer’s new comic opera, ‘‘L’Etoile du Nord,” now the attraction at the Opera Comique, Paris, will im- mediately be produced by Mr. Gye, at the Covent Garden theatre, London. Clara Novello returns to England next mouth. She is performing at La Scala, in Milan, where her success in Verdi's ‘ Rigoletto”’ exceeds anything of the sort for years. Tamberlik and Madame de la Grange are the stars at the Opera in St. Petersburg. Badler’s Welle theatre will close early. ‘The busi- nese’ (i.e. the receipt of cash) has been very bad this | season. ‘Miss Featherstone has made rather a hit at Drury Lane, dm the character of Midas. A new farce, called “My | | Bispei Cook and my Housekéépér,’) is underlined, There was announced under the patronage of royalty, a ¢rowd of duchesses, and the Lord Mayor and aldermen, a per- formance of “Virginius,” in aid of a fund for the sup- the wives and children of the British soldiers. | a od err chub eee Tarai fs Chavant, | Beebe & Co., Fashionable Hatters, 156 | way.—@pring and summer fashion for gi Brooke plays gratuitously, and several vocalists (Favanti, with Misses Poole, Featherstone, Cicely Nott, and others) ‘will assist on the same terms. “To Oblige Benson”? is the name of a new piece at the Olympic. It is conveyed from the French drama, ‘Un | Serviceta Blanchard,” by Tom Taylor. The Fine Arts. EXHIBITION OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY. The twenty-ninth exhibition of the National Academy | ef Design is now open at the Academy’s galleries, Broad- ‘way, near Bond street. The unfavorable weather since | the opening, has prevented many ladies from attending, Dut we all hope for better things this week. Th® sun did - mot condescend to give us his light during the first three days of the exhibition, and many of the pictures failed to weeeive the due meed of praise on account of this fact. ‘There are three hundred and ninety-eight pictures on exhibition, including several specimens of miniature painting and » dozen or so of crayon drawings. Among ‘a these works of art there are many to admire and but few to condemn. The number of por fwalts of unknown ladies and gentlemen is large, ‘and some of them display great talent on the part of the artist, though they do not give evidence of good taste on the part of the persons painted. This last remark does not; ef course, apply to portraits owned and put in by the ar- ‘tists themselves. In our opinion, Elliott leada the portrait painters; and he has many imitators, nove of them spproxi- amnyate- wious charm which leads one to sit half an hour before portrait, and ever and anon be carried away by the idea ‘that it is really the man, and not the “counterfeit pre- seatment,’’ which entrances you. What a pity it is that guch genius should be wasted in immortalizing gentle- men with highly mottled countenances, and ladies with peraggy necks, little pig-like eyes and crooked meses! There are some portraits of handsome wen in the exhibition, but hardly one of a really pretty woman. Some noted individuals also figure ‘on the canvass. There is Bishop Wainwright in {ull ca- nonicals, (very good, although dnexpressive,) by Hicks; there is Colonel Ward Burnett, full length, (pretty fair, but why didn’t the artist spell the names of the battles en the pillar correctly’—the Colonel looks more'like pray- fag than rejoicing, too,) by Shegogue; H. W. Beecher, by Hicks—a good portrait; George T. Trumble, (Hicks,) a fail length, with s background where a number of urchins, aB dressed in red, are unnecessarily impaling themselves ‘apen the sharp points of an iron fence. Boyle has a Desutifal cabinet portrait of George De Forest, Esq., handsome man, with his good points well brought out. AMogether, there are one hundred and seventy-eight por- fwaits. It is ludicrous sometimes to see a pert young ady’s disappointment, and hear her say ‘'Pshaw!’ when she has fallen in love with a handsome man’s por- taait, and on referring to the catalogue finds the inter- esting though rather vague announcement that it is the “ Portrait of a a. ” If “gentlemen” overcome their modesty sufficient], i Ae their faces on exhibition, peor vette certainly allow their names to figure in the “Durand, Cropsey, reape painters. e Hudson,” by Gignoux, is a beanti fal thing; there is a softness and delicacy of color- dng sbout it wht ich makes it indescribably pleasing. It is the property of Baron Rothschild. Huntington’s “Good famaritan’’ attracts much attention. The Toliage and herbage is temptingly rich and ‘natural. Jerome Thompson’s “October Afternoon’’ attracts much attention.
