York #enday Meroary ) THR “ RCARLET LETTEK.’ That warm friend of the present unhappy adminw tration at Washington, and of Geo. Pierse in particu lar—the Hsxatp—suli harps upon that letter. reeks, with fretful earnestness avd dis ressful zeal, for further proof that General Pierce #rote a letter 90 the free soil ratificati no meeting im ta city ia 1848, approving of Its plaiorm and its proposed amendments. it shows beyond di:pute that such a letter was written to just such a meeting—to a free sell or abe Wition meeting, tainted with the worst species of Van Burenism— the most shuffling, time serving and con- temptible of ai] isms. In showing this we have prime Sacee evidence that Gen Pierce Was at Ubat tie aud ‘that be had long been himself taiated #ith abolition: ism. Show us what compavy @ gentioman keeps and tile t by views Tae only to prod Union tot From aad purposes ¢ b we will tell you what manner or man he is Aside from the fact that the Surveyorof the Port, Mr. Coch Face Dis acwiled que cLougt, uabertuuately tor Bim, ty pus b ud w doubt, w all walr miads, tums st such a jetler Was @rillen, aud that it was very eee in existence, und in his p session, let us look at be President's subsequent acts—at bis present affiliat Everyb dy knows that Mr Pierce owes his elec tion to Toe Union sentiment that sprang out of the Bgitation, the excitement, aud tie uritation natu rally .reated by the slavery hurricane that blew over this gountry in 1860. Sverybody, ourselves among the number of everybodies, was ied to believe that be was 3 pure Union man, as uctauted, politi- oslly, though not, alas! morally, as the unbora babe, What do we find immeaiately afler tis election? We find him affiliated vith— mony other political bumbugs that super emiveut political party humbug —Jobn Van Buren, who had sworn, in episties and in barangues until he was black in the face, against every form of slavery—whe went about damning it up hill and down aale, iuterlarding bis oaths with filatalent attempts at wit, aud abortive darts at the bumorous——who impiously caied his God to witaess that he might lose his wg or his wits, or some other fabulous piece of property, if ne ever abandoned the | cause of anti+lavery, nd who has since be come and is now acknowledged as the leader of ae administrative party in this city. It was litical jack and mouutebank tnat worked i rdest to thrust that houest and uaoflinching democrat, Greene C. Bronson, out of the custom ‘And why? Because that estimable gentle- man, well knowivg Mr. John Van Buren’s antece- dents, and his treacherous, political, chamelion-like character, would lend him no aid or coantenance in putting a dozen or two of his satellites or ayr- ons into office. Has not Mr Van Buren himeelf made public complaint of Mr. Bronson’s neglect of him? All the iniluences that are brought to bear | wpon the administration are as soft as putty, and anything hard, like Mr. Bronson, has been aud is moet objectionable. | This particular ‘Scarlet letter” that the Hexanp | so harps upon, is not the only “‘scft” letter that | might have been brought against the President. | But they have all been bought up by this time, in aigW of the next Presidential electioa, to which ott | Pierce is vain enough to louk forward with iigh | hopes, and in which be has about as much chance | | of success as @ cat has in tophet without claws. Jn the fact of the existence of a host of “Scarlet | ters,” softer than the softest putt; Wy on the subject | abolitionism, and written by ‘ranklin Pierce, may be found the secret of the “softs” influence | over him, the secret of bis present anomalous, dis tracted, and reatly pitiable condition before toe country, and the noble part of the party that rushed bam into office. “On, what a fall was there, my countrymen | Marine “affaics. TEE NEW OLirrss yuu OCKAN HERALD. ‘The great avenues opeved te trade by the discov- ery of gold in California aud Australia, have de- ve,oped in a wonderful degree our national capacity for shipbuiding. Every class of ur vessels, for speed, beauty and strengta, is famous on every s2a. Although New York, as te great mart of American commerce, took the lead in producing large clippers, yet our frieads to the eastward have not tarried long inthe rear. Many of the finest ships which now hail from this port were designed and built in east- ern ports. The Ocean Herald, built at Damariscetta by Mr. Cyrus Cotter, now here, is a noble specimen of what our down-east friends cando, She registers nearly 2,400 tons, is built of white oak, and copper fastened, and is of a model designed to stow a good earge and at the same time sail with the swiftost. She is 245 feet long on deck, and 258 feet over all— has 444 feet extreme breadth of beam, and 24 feet depth of hold, inelading 8 feet height between decks. Her ends are long and very sharp, and her lines slightly concave up to 22 feet draught, but above there they gradually become convex, to corre:pond with her outline on the rail. Her gtern is nearly oval in ou'line, but in the make of the monkey rail it is round ed and neatly finished. All her accommoda. tions are on the upper deck, leaving the entire space below for the stowage of cargo. She has a top gallant forecastle, a house abaft the foremast for her crew and other purposes; and aft she has a half poop deck wita a large house in it, which contains two splendid eabins, which are finished and fur- nished in superior style. The ship perior has an excellent white oak frame, and all the hooks, pointers, and all the knees in tue hold are also of white oak, and her ceiling, kelsons, deck frames and planking are of hard pine. Her keel is of rock maple in two depths, with twelve feet scarphs, sides sixteen iuches, and moulds thirty-two inches. The floor timbers are moulded twenty iaches, and sided from twelve to fourteen ; and she bas three Gepths of midships keelsous, ‘each sixteem iaches square, and sister keelsons of the same size, the whole bolted with one and taree ig ie iach copper and iron. The floor ceiliug is tive inches thick, aud her bilge streaks commence as sixteea inches square ; the next streaks fourteen inches, graduated w nine inches thick, and continued that substance up to the lower deck. The lower deck beams are sixteen incaes equare amidships, tapered toward the ends, aad tae waterways are algo sixtwen inches square, with mas- sive thick work over and inside of them, and the ‘ eeiling above is six inchea thick. She is ware fastened throughout, tue fast-aing varying frum 14 to Linch. Toe upper deck beams are lv by 15 inches, the upper deck water ways 14 inches square, with two thick streaks inside of them, and the eae of both decks is 34 inches thisk. Her most filled with massive hooks and painter her stanchions are als) very stoat, and all knees are well itted and strongly bolted. Her garboards are 8 inches thick, the next streak graduated to 5 inches, the substanse of her bostom vas ig; her wales are 6 by 8 inches, and her plank id main rail are each 6 inches thick. She ts equare fastened with treenails, aud butt and bilge bolted with copper. Outside, a+ well as inside, she is a very strongly built vessel, aud remarkably weli fin’ 5 Her lower masts and bows peeled built of hard pine, dowelled together, bolted and hooped over ail with iron. They are, commencing with the fore. 3), 40 and 31 inches in diameters, and 89, 92 and 82 feet long, the be oeeetd 194, 20 and 154 inches in dia- Meters, and 50, 54 and 43 leet long, and the other masts in proportion. Her lower yards are 80, 90 aad 40 feet Square; topaail yards, 63, 70 and 56 feet; the bowspriti s 23/ eet outboard, jibboom divided as 20 ‘and 16 feet for the two jids, and the other spars in Prube is strongly rigged, and looks splendidly Wo! ar as we are qualified to judge, we conai- der her a perfect ship in ail her details, aad one, too, that will work well and sail fast. She is owned by bs builder?and is commauded by his brother. We have called attention to this fine vessel for the of letting our New York mechanics see what our downeast friends oan produce in the way of clip- pers.
