FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Faway, Dec. 9--5 P. M. We have nothing new to report in the stook market At the Sret board th+re was greater activity than we ave noticed for some days past, and the tendency of prices was slightly upward. Nicaragua and Cumberland a@dvanced + per cent each; Norwich and Worcester, \; Reading Railroad, 54. Fiorence and Keyport declined ‘; ‘New York Central Bonds, }¢. The upward movement in ‘Nicaragua Transit continues, but not with so much energy as at firet. It is reported that the company has recently ‘been a large purchaser of its own stock, for the purpose Of retiring it from tho market. We are mot disposed to doubt the fact, but we do not admit the object stated. The company undoubtedly have surplus funds, and it could not be temporarily appropriated to a better use than in the purchase of i's owa stock. But the idea of tetiring any of its capital before giving the stockholders ‘auything in the shape of a dividend is preposterous, and qrould not be quietly submitted to, The recent advance tans been caused principally by the quantity of stock taken oat of the market by speculators, and partially by {he improvements realized in the financial affairs of the company. The Erie Railroad report is promised on the Grst of the new year. We have been anxiously looking for it for some weeks past, amd the time has been so frequently deferred, that we have concluded to wait patiently its appearance. The earnings for November were so much in excens of the estimate, that the friends of the road have taken hold of the stock with renewed confidence. All the Erie Railroad wants is good manage- tment. This we have contended for for several yea ‘end if any improvement has been made in its interasi ‘affairs and system of operation slong the line, we shall Dasten to record it, Well managed, the Erie Railroad cau be made as productive and as profitable as the Con teal line, and its stock would command as great a pre ium. Atthe second board the market opened and clored avy; ® slight decline in prices was realized, Nicaragua iil off % per cent; Erie Railroad, *; ; Cumberland oal, 3. Some days since, we noticed the fact that several per sons in Pittsburg had instituted legal proceedings against various banks and cerporations in the city for paying oat ‘the amail notes of other States contrary to law. It now appears by the latest Pittsburg papers received, that the parties commencing the suits have been held to bail on ‘the charge of conspiracy in attempting to extort money from various corporations, by tempting them to break ths Law, and gererally to effect a fraudulent object. And, if we add this sum to the amount of productive | tock, to wit:—8,258,171 63, we will find that the grand ‘total of outstanding Cebt and liability is $25,937,156 58. Mc reover, the State is subject to a contingent liability for 92,910,080—being the amount of eubseription to companies of whose organization no information has been received, It thus appears that the whole cebt of the State, exclusive of productive investments, amounts to $20,581,004 9%, or to $238, 847,263 68, if we include the amount of ‘productive investment. But the amount of productive debt, to wit: 319,196,064, is small in comparison with the rascurces of the State, The auditor of public accounts estimates the value of property in the State at $600,600,000, The Frederick (Va ) News of the Sth instant, says:— The State mortgage on the Rappahannock canal wai closed om Friday morning, by « sale made by W. P. Bo cock, the Attorney General, Commissioner. The whole ry was purchased by Wellington Gordon, Trustee, Cor the sum o By a further provision of the Gecree, the State will tak rest in stock, and the purchase being madecn behalf of the creditors, their debts will also be ratisfied by stock, ani the company ‘thus relieved from its embarrassments, and freed from <he incumbrance of this load of debt, ‘will comméace a new era in its history under what we hope will prove to ‘be brighter auspices and with more favorable prospects of Guccess, ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption Cor warehouse, and the withdrawals from warehouse dariag the week ending and including Thursday, Dec. 8, 368. = Movemeyts or Formcy Dry Goons, Withdrawals from Warehouse, Phys. Still, with diminished dread of excessive imports, and the prospect of | a very large consumption during the next three ‘or four months, owners do not appear willing to make any con- cessions in prices, nor very eager to eeil anything like de sirable fabrics. The unsettled state of sfairs on the continent—the dissentions between employers and em ployes in Gyeat Britain—the scarcity of labor in several portions of the United Kingdom, and the hieh value of raw material everywhere, tend to present an over production, which will, in time, do much to obstruct the shipment of goods frm) Europe on manu‘acturers’ accaunt, and to limit the execution of orders. Hence, the confidence of im- porterr who expect to be able to sell all they have eon- tracted for on acvantageous terms, ere the close of the ensuing season. It is quite asmoath tovwecuze ‘any con- siderable supplies of German, French, or Eagiish produo tions, either for immediate or future delivery, under the extreme prices of the fall. Nor can Chinese fabrics be obtained very easily, except at some improvement in Stock Exchange.
