Henne I ee ee er) BOARDING AND LODGING. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. moN HY MARKET. Wroveay Nov. 23—8P. M ‘There was quite a reaction in the stock market to-day. Molders were in hopes of arresting the decline, by not pressing stock; but the tendency was downward from the ‘opening, and prices closed at ® decline varying from & quarter te one and a balf per cent. The transactions wore not large, and the demand exceedingly limited. At the first board, Nicaragua declined 4; per ceat; Cumber- Iand, 4; New York Centra! Railroad, \{; Reading Rail- cead, 1; Erie Railroad, %{; Harlem, 154; Lomg Island, 54; Norwieh and Worcester, |; Hudson Railroad, 1; New Ha- ven Railroad, 1; Michigan Central Railroad, };; Panama Railroad, 3¢; NewYork Central Bonds, 33; Erie Bonds, 1871, 3. Pennsylvania Coal asvanced 34 per cent It appears by this that the depreciation was general, and ‘we see no reason why it -bould aot continue. Tae banks ave supplied bull speculators pretty freely with funds om the hypotheestion of the worthless stuff pur- ehased, and the regular street buyers have filled themselves up with all the leading fancies on the market, and now there ia no outlet. Even the officerss of half a ‘dozen banks we could nams, located in Wall street, between Broad and Nasrau streets on the west and Hanover street on the east, are as full as they can hold of fancy stochs. The individuals we allude to are comstant operators in stocks, sometimes for a rise nd sometimes for a fall. gAll this ix well known in the atreet. Weare stating nothing new; and yet any one of theee men would indignantly repudiate anything of the kind, if publicly scoused of it. It is from such causes that the stock market from time to time is inflated or de- pressed. The banks are of more service to fancy stock speculators than to any other class. To the commercial Classes they are of very little use, and very uncertain at that. The time bas gone by when the banks can alarm uses men by their contractions andexpansions. The poor, deluded outside stock speculators are the only class who severely suffer by the sudden changes in the move- mente of the banks; and the fluctuations recently realized in the market value of the fancies show that in this iine of business these institutions are now as powerful as io times past they were in mercantile matters. ‘The banks of this city have contracted their regular Jine of discounts, within the past three months, upwards Of fifteen millions of dollars, all of which has been draw: fréba the mercantile classes, notwithstanding which very few failures have occurred. This shows that the mer Chants have other resources; and it is fortunate they have. The importance of our banking institutions to business men is daily becoming lees, and the time is not far, distant when they will be nothing more or less than @o many stock jobbing cone: rns. That they are #0 now, to a great extent, is well known in financial circles, an¢ ‘po harm will be done to the commercial! community by exclusively devoting their capitals to the movement of fanoy atocks. The loans made to brokers, on call by hy- pothecation of the fancies, do not appear in the bank re- ports of discounts. They sre called cash items, and are #0 reported in the official returns. It is estimated in Wall street that the losses on fancy stocks, within the past three months, have not been less Shan three millions of dollars, and the question has been frequently asked where the ‘osses have fallen. We par- tially answered that question on Mondey morning last. ‘We showed at that time who shouldersd a portion of the burden; and it is our impression that further develope- ments will soon be made, equaily startling. There have been very few failures in Wall street among bull stock spe- culators, andit is well known that operators in fancy stocks for s rise are generally the wrakert class in the street. Had there been suspensions to any extent, we should have known that differences had not been pai ! and losses conse- quently avoided; but we know ihat all contracts have been fullled, all losses promptly paid, and somebody mu st have been most seriously drained, Now the quertion is, where did the means to meet these enormous differences come from? Wall street could be much enlightened by certain tndivi¢uals well known in the bank parlors of that im- Bediate vicinity. We understand that Mr. Vanderbilt and the ) caragua Company haveat last agreed upon ¢x-Juiges Beardsley | and Kirkland as referees in their controversy, No bet- ter men could have been selected. The former, from his ‘yecent studies, is peculiarly fitted to look into and de- side upon the powe:s of corporations, and the we think Mr, Vanderbilt will be tripped up, and not re- Rover one penny, because his actionisszainst the Nicar- agua Company, which i: not an iccorporation by the laws of the State. His action should have by on against the incividuals acting as officers of the com- Pony, or agrivst the stoekholders, who trade under the neme of the company. What particular points are em- ‘braced in the above reference we are not informed; but ‘we understagd it Joes not embrace all the claims of Van- derbilt. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer Of the United States at this port, to-day, vere $128,131 14; paid, $356,827 39—balance, $5,431,855 27. The actual authorized capital of the company is $17,000,000—adout five millions more than has yet been ed in any shape Im the ertimated and means of the tompany we find a further issue of stock, amounting to 49,490 shares, upon which an instalment of $5 per share is put down, as part of the resources in hand to complete the road, This will make a total issue of 170,000 shares, upon which there will have been paid the sum of $1,050,000, leaving in the pockets of certain gentle- mer—about a baker’s dozen—the snug sum of $15,950,000, It will be seem by the above etatement that this road | will be built with funds raised by the issue of bonds. | Tae company will be liable for debts amounting to about sixterm millions of dollars, to pay which the two and a half million acres of land granted to the | company by Congress have been pledged. This is the | plan propoted for the construction of the Atlantic and | Paside Railroad, and, if it proves as successful, it will be | the most gigantic and most profitable speculation of the age. The grant from Congress to the Lllinols Central Railroad Company has been monopolized by about s dozen of the wealthiest railroad capitalists of this city, | while the system adopted for the distribution of the stock interes's, im every section of the country. The Illinois | Central Railroad, owned by the number of individuals | pamed above, is the first railrosd in this country the cost | of constructing which will have been entirely defrayed by a direst grant of land from Congress. It is, therefore, a | precedent, and may lead to further grants cf « similar character, fcr similar purposes. After the adjournment of the board, the following sles were made at auction, by A. H. A part of the Catawissa, Williamsport and Erie Railroad in Pennsylvania, was epened on the 12th inst., and a large | party from Broomsburg, Columbia county, went on an ex- cursion on the road. There are seven immense bridges on the line of the road from Catawissa to Tamaqua. From the summit in the coal region for seventy miles, to Ras. ton there is » descending line of railroad, and from thence to New York, by the New Jersey Central Railroad, grades not exceeding 21 feet to the mile. From the same sum- mit to Philadelphia, 115 miles, it is either a level or de- sending grade, where a single locomotive can draw four or five hundred tons. Leading to the eeaboard, east of Baltimore, the highest grade from Williamsport, where this road connects with the Sunbury and Erie and Elmira railroads, is no more than 33 feet to the mile, going either to Philadelphia or New York. Philadelphia will be placed by this road one hundred miles nearer to Western New York than that city is by present routes. It opens a direct line to the West from New York via Easton and Catawisss, to Williamsport; thence by the Sunbury and Erie Rail road’ to Ridgeway, ip Elk egunty, and from Ridgeway to the city of Erie, on Lake Erie. This rosd, when opened, will shorten the line of travel from New York to Erie one hundred miles, over any line of railroad at this time in operation in the State of New York. hh: saa aeyesens Nov, 23, 1883. 200 abs Cumb Coal Co E 60 3% $5000 Califor vn, 70. 2000 City 57s, 58... 4006 Erie Income bis. 9635 40€0 Erie Convt bds.. 924 1000 H RR 26 M Be +3 903g 1€00 Panama RR bés 100 . 60 180 Park Yad ©. 50 3 2000 N J Central bas. 9834 2000 I Cen RR bes, 83 500 NYCeDRR bw #3 95 shs Mech Bank. 131 | 190 Del& Hud Can ¢ Co 110% 150 18 Mer Exchange Bk Ba of N America ‘@ erican Ex Bk. 116 10 Irving Bank.... 1003¢ 50 U Sins Co, 130 20 St Nich Ins Co.. 96 Se ee 3% 550 do, Bs 200 PotosiLeadCobs0 5.
