held in New York in May, we 1a have Teen in ‘the habit of giving, from the most auth? ntic sources, the numbers of the different sts; and these numbers have generally been r -epublished in the religious and other almana’. of the day. This is the only correct ennM’sration of the religious sects in the United States. That which is now professed to be put forth under thé name of De Bow, and as ceiming from the Census Depart- ment at Washington, is grossly erroneous, blun- dering, ridiculous, and absurd. We will name one instance: It puts down the Catholics at & little over half a million; but it is well known that the number of the Catholics in this coun- \ try, aécording to their own and the accurate enumeration, is nearly a million anda half. The enumeration of the other sects is equally blundering and erroneous. De Bow, the present superintendent, succeed- ed Mr. Kennedy; but he seems to be utterly in- capable of comprehending the difference between facts and fancy in American statiaties, Tue PRESIDENT AND HIS Canmer.—Some narrow thinking people suppose that because we disapprove of the policy of the Cabinet of ’ General Pierce, and are advocating the removal or resignation of the larger part, we are there- fore very anxious such an event should take place to-morrow, next day, next week, or next month. No such thing. We are in no haste for that event. We know too well that the President cannot dispense with his present ad- visers till some time after the meeting of Con- gress. It would embarass him very much to dismiss them, re-model them, or turn them out, previous to the period when he makes up his megeage for the two houses, and when the de- partments hand in their reports to the same authority. The removal of the Cabinet at this time, or even during the next five, six, seven, or ten months, would equally embarass us. We have not half exhausted Cushing, Marcy, Guthrie and the rest of them, They are our capital in trade ; and if they were removed to- morrow, what would we do for a pungent edi- torial article the néxt day? We cannot spare them, and we really hope that the President will take our embarassment into consideration, and keep them at least for six months ora year, until their characters are completely exhibited to the country, and their principles run out. With nursing, however, and temperance and moderation, and good care in the treatment we give the Cabinet in their different courses, we think they will last as editorial topics, if dis- eussed—pungent and agreeable to all—for at least nine or twelve months longer. Will the President take this into consideration, and jog on with them for a little while longer? Arts and Artists. Bovcrry, who is now considered the finest landscape painter in America, has fhished his series of landscapes MBustrative of the four seasons. As he has painted these plotures for s teat of hia style, they are worthy a careful examination. They can be seen at Williams & Stevens’sy 823 Broadwa; Mr, Powri1’s “ De Soto’’ is still on exhibition at the Academy of Design, Broadway, rear Bond street. This Pieture was done to occupy the vacant space in the ro- tunda of the Capitol. It is worthy a visit. Mr. O. 8S.
