He was unable to swim, and after sinking twice wes with great difficulty rescued by means of the feats kept on the bridge for such puxp ses, na ‘terially aided By the exertions of a gentleman whose name we could not ecertain, who gallantly sprang from the boat, and swsm back to save the str ggling man, When taken out of the water the man was quite exhausted, but ultimately recovered and went home. If a chain were extended across the lower end of the bridge previous to the boat starting, it would prevent the possibility of Jumping, and the consequent loss of many a life. This morning, at about quarter before 10 o'clock, a shocking accident, which resulted in the loss of the lives of seven men, occurred on the Delaware, opposite Dock atreet. The unfortunate men were laborers in the employ of the Camden and Amboy Railroad Company, and had been engaged in clearing out the dock below the Walnut street landing. Two scows, loaded with mud, had been made'fast to the stern of the steamboat Washington, for the purpose of being towed to Camden. Nine men were in reows. Just as the steamboat and the scows reached the channel, the swell from the former swamped ‘one of the scows, and it instantly sunk, sucking the other down with it. Seven of the nen sauk with the boata, and were seen no more. Only two men, who acted as eaptains of the scows. were saved. They were preserved by clinging to some matter which remained afloat. The following are the rames, &c., of the victim: Francis Daily, aged about 25 ; lately married ; boarded at McClenay’s, in Water street. Michael McGuigan, aged about 30; resided in O'Hara's eourt, in the neighborhood of Seventh and Shippen streets, Bis wife became the mother of twin children a short time David Hassett, aged about 30; lived in South street, be- tween Fifth and Sixth. He was married about six weeks Jobn Powers, aged about 28; lived in the upper part of thecity. Hin wife died about three weeks since. Three orphan children are left by this victim. ip Scully, aged about 28; lived in Market street, below front. “He leaves a widow. Patrick O’Donohue, aged abont 32; lived in Wilson street, below Christian, Southwark. He was the only un- married wan among those who were lost. Timothy O’Prian, aged 24; lived in O’Hara’s Court, He was married quite recently. One of the survivors made a desperate effort to save O'Brian, but he was compelled to relinquish the attempt. All the persons drowned were natives of Ireland; they had been in the employ of the Company for several years, The sad accident caused much excitement along the wharves, and great numbers witnessed the dreadful scene without being Those who saw the affair attribute the calamity to the fact that the Washington was going at too rapid a rate. Those on the scows were apprehensive of danger, aud shouted out to the crew of the steamboat, but no notice ‘was taken of their cries, until too late to avert the catas- trophe. The news of the accident son fot wind among the friends of the sufferers. and several of their relatives ‘epaired to the wharf to inquire as to their fate. Their anguish on learning the dreadful truth may readily be eonceived. The vide was running up at the time of the mishap. At the time we left the spot none of the bodie of the unfortunate men had been recovered. Lerontaxt Rirrnoap Wovement—We are grati- fed to learn from « source of undoubted authority, that the Fastern railroad company have made a guarantee to the Portsmouth and Dover railroad company of six per eent on $210,0: 0, the estimate! cost of the new road from Portsmouth ‘to Dover, and that measures will be im- mediately teken to enter upon the construction of the road. This guarantee renders the stock at once valuable and desirable, so that there will be no difficulty in hav ing it taken up. This road will be in direct communica tion with the Cocheco road, now running to the lake and Erriected to the Weirs, there to meet the Boston and treal railroad, and go direct to the St. Lawrence, making the toute from Canada to Boston as near through Portsmouth as by any other road. The stock for thefeon- pection between the Eastern railroad at Elliott and the Wakefield and Conway railroad is taken up, and the work will go on with good speed. These two roads, both of which have a terminus in Portsmouth, promise 'as much for the future prosperity of our city, as any that have ‘deen contemplated.—Portsmouth Journal. Court Calendar—This Day.
