The Council was afterwards addressed by Lirr.e Fixx, who said :—Father, we have a word to say in regard to the decision of the chiefs and young men, oncerning our new Jand. You have granted the | wishes of our people. You have granted tiir wishes fin that respect, and they bave nothiug further to ask n relation thereto. Having concluded our business, ind being anxious to be on our own huats, we wish ito finish signing the treaty as fast as possibic. Governor—We will bave the treaty read to them ain. Colonel Lowry then read the treaty to them, Buring which time they listened with evident plea- pore; wondering no doubt how such a jargon could ee to writing, and read as plamly and per- fectly. He asked tnem if they underswod it, and they all answered in the affirmative. hg signing of the treaty being next in order, Col. pro roceeded to write their names. so that each eae might touch the pen when wien his name wa called, and his X made. ROSSER, Secretary. J.C. DOW, Sec’y to Commissioners, HENRY FOSTER, G. W. HOLBROOK, M. D, No sooner was the treaty signed than the squaws began to strip the wigwams, by way of preparing for the Crow river country. The next day they put all their canoes in requisition, and stole as many more as they could find along their route, on the Mississippi, and in a week’s time the principal part of the tribe, men, women, chiliren, horses and dogs, ‘were pitching their tents in their New Jerusalem. True, they have no right to go until the tresty is ra- tified; but what dothey care for that. They most likely think if they go and take possession, that the Great Father will, as it were, be compelled to ratify it; and that if he does not ratify it, aud they are ob- Tged to return, he will make them a handsome pre- sent for all the trouble and expense he has put them to, in making a bargain and not ‘sticking to it.” This part of the country has been greatly relieved since the treaty was made, and I Lope the Great Father will sanction it, It isagreat treaty. The land we obtain by it has ‘a front on ay Mi: i pi of nearly stxty miles, and contains almost, if not quite, one million acres of prairie and timber. Before the treat; aty this tract was a sealed book to all white men, notwithstanding the beautiful soil invited the farmer, and the maguifi- cent pines the lumberman. For Pe we give Mand which has a front on ah exeopt at of about twenty- four miles—land which, except that immediately on the bank of the great river, wil not be used by white men for farming pur; in many years, and more- over that has been given to the Stockbridge tribe, and they and the Winnebagoes together will occu, y 8 tract of less than half the extent of that which ‘Winnebagoes alone occupied before. Farmera and others along the bank ot the river will no tonger soffer from tne depredations which they have besn subject to for some years past, but every man can sit under his own vine and” fig tree with none to molest him, nor any Winnebagoes to steal the pro- ducts of his labor. Governor Gorman has been up to see us Seg twice since his appointment, and each time he has done us “ @ power of good.” We talk of giving him a publio dinner the nent time he comes. ‘Yours, JAYUAWE. eee ee CREE SCENE.
