FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKBT. Sunpay, Sept. 18-0 P. M. ‘During the past week the stock market has been mode- ‘Bately active, and prices have been pretty well sustained, ‘Mhe money market has not cored up much, and the pros pect ia by 20 means favorable, in = financjal point of ‘ytew. It is possible the banks may show an augmenta- Men of specie; but the contraction is still going on in the ‘Me of discounts. This isan encouraging feature inthe Dank movement, and the check exercised upon commer- @ia} operations generally must be most beneficial. The @hanges recently made in the system of banking which hae been 20 long pursued in this city will de away entire: Jy with all those endden fluctuations in the money mar- bet and keep every institution im proper trim. We shall Rave no mere speculation on the part of the banks. They are compelled under the new regulations to show their ‘Inands so often that it is utterly impossible for them to ge far wrong. Unti) the new system gets fairly in epera- ‘Gen the banks will be steadily contracting. They were ‘my out of order, and requiring much trimming and Wallasting. They have got everything pretty smug, and ‘we shall soon go forward again with a favorable wind. The exportation of specie last week from this port amounted to only $10,000, ‘he commercial advices brought by the Arctic, as was anticipated, are rather unfavorable for thore who have een operating heavily in breadstuffs. Flour was very @eB (ef sale at Liverpool on the 5th inst., and in some Maatanees a reduction of 1s. and 1s. 6d. was submitted to after the sailing of the Niagara; but it is reported that ‘here was notbing doing even at these rates on the day Jwevious to the Arctic’s departure. Cotten was also dull, nd the quotations had slightly receded. Several Amster- @am heuser, chiefiy engaged im the oil and corn trade, had failed. ‘The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Inne determined to construct a double track from the re- Weeve fund profits. Twenty five miles are to be built ‘@mmediately, and the remainder is to be done frem tine ‘te time as the means of the company will permit. ‘The Obioand Indiana divisiens of the Cincinzati and Indianapolis and Chicago Road bave been consolidated, making the entire line one interest and one stoek. Mr. KB XM. Gregory, # Cincinnati banker, ia the President. Barge subscriptions to the stock have been made in real xtate. The location is finally made, right of way obtained, gna the work is to be let shertly. ‘Mee Alexandria Gazette states that the ties on the Miananeas Gap Railroad are laid nearly to Manassas Gap; ‘Bhat the iron has been purchased in New York, and is @aily expected at Alexandria, and that the cars may be @apected to run to the Gap in a very short time after the arsival of the iron. ‘Fee Dolly-Hide Copper Company of Frederick county, Maryland, is likely to be one of the most successful ‘these formed in the Atlantic section of the country. For @ametime past the want of proper machinery has been wasiously felt, and the operations of the company have ‘Wherefore been materially restricted. All these difficul- ‘Bes will soon be removed. The engine house is in rapid progress, and will be ready for the engine early in Octo- Bes. ‘Phe engine will be capable of pumping one thon- wand gallons per minute, and will work the stamps, dress he ores, kc. In the absence of the machinery, the com- pany have not been idie nor unmindfal of the interests ef tt shareholdere. The mines lie in the centre of a rich mineral country, which extends some twelve or fifteen amiles, but at no point has it proved so rich and extensive ‘a ai the Dolly Hide location. The company took pos- geasion of the mines in the rpring, and has realized Tage profits from the start ; and this, too, without the id of machinery, which is a thing of very rare oocur- Fence in copper mining, The vein isa large ono, and gazries a large amount of the richest ore. The width is Soar feet, with a leader of solid ore eighteen inches wide, ‘and has been proved eight hundred feet long. The yield | @uring the month of August was at the rate of $800 per fathom. The product for August was much more than the directors anticipated. With enly ten miners forty- ‘Mhree tens of thirty per cent ore was raised and dressed Ser market, worth full $125 per ton, and at a total cost of less than $900. This result can be greatly increased after the engine commences work. Independent of the wish vein of ore, the company possesses a fortune in ite ‘@pparently inexhaustible quantities of biack dirt, of whieh there are several hundred tons on the surface. This yields a per eentage of pure copper mush larger than the average of Cormish copper mines. It has Weeady been found st a depth of thirty-six feet, and no @igne of exhaustion, Tuo pruxiuitty vt thie mine to market gives it immense advantages over more distant Becations. The Baltimore Smelting Company have offer- 94 to purchace all its ores at full market prices for cash. Fhe comyaay have enough money in their treasury out ef its working capital to last two years. Their esti- mated annual product is 1,500 to 2,000 tons, which will give very iarge dividends to the stockholders, A hand- pome dividend will be earned this year. ‘The trade report of Du Fay & Co., of Manchester, for ‘fhe month of August, contains the following just remarks elative to the financial movements of the day:— ‘The gradually advancing rate for money is not caused — want of Paice arising from over speculation, and by a drain of the precious metals in pay- anges imporiations, but mainly by an unusual extension of trade, chiefly to distant countries, from whieh the returns for goods exported are slowly coming wound, and also from a large import trade, caused by a geal increased consumption of all articley of food by masses of our population. All this, and the increased eect of our productious—owing to the state of the labor market and to tie higher prices of the raw materials combined, cause an increased demand for money. To those who remember what extraordinary notions were abroad some nine months back, about the expected over supply ef the precious metal—its suppored effect upon the reve- nue of eapitalists—the hurry with which Holland got rid of Hts gold, and the dificultise which were expected for a Rae saplosumt of the large quantities of gold Australia would pour into the coffers of she Bank, the present state of things must appear strange fm the exireme, evincing, in a striking manner, the falia- ‘ey of superficial reasoning and hasty prophecies. Man ‘one who acted upon the notions then prevalent feel weme embarrassment at the present moment. Numerous wndertakings and tranactions have been embarked into, wader the impression that money, which was then worth fowo per ‘would continue to be had at this or atill Jewer rates; hence, the po goes felt when aiscount rose a eet four Tonk cent for short paper, and may proba- wr. These erroneous notions about the Shaase the money market would arsume in 1853, have also lea to capital being fixed to «large amount in va- rious foreign undertaki hile at the same time in- vesimento at pa in b ships, and extension of wailwaye, were goirg on. The gradual, but continual, of te money smart will of course curtail even legi- Serato bux aa, while it yut a stop to most specula~ ‘thve undertakings. = tte ‘These are the sound views of practical, sensible busi- meen men, and are worth whole volumes of theories of speculators. The cause of the preeent stringency in the ‘Money markets of the United States and Great Britain is simply over-trading. We have imported too largely, ‘and Great Britain has exported too largely. That these mevements, so opposite, should produce the same re- malts, may appear strange, but it is nevertheless true. je have run too deeply in debt, while Great Britsin has ‘trusted too large an amount on too long acredit, This is the trouble, and both nations must have time to extri- @ate themselves from the embarrasements with which they are surrounded. Both have over-traded to a cer. ‘tain extent, but it has been in legitimate lines, and the @hannels of trade are clear from all obstructions of a werious character. We have only to keep quiet for a ‘time, to rest a little, and allow things to recover from ‘the great tension they have so long labored under ‘The advance in the rate of interest by the Bank of England to four per cent should not create am alarm in the public mind, It may fora time check the invest- ‘ment of Englich capital here, and it ia possible may toa moderate extent call horse capital already invested in this country, but it can only be temporary. The rate of fmterest on this side of the Atlantic rules too high, and foreign capitalists have too much confidence in the cha- wacter of our public securities to make any very great change in their investments. It may be many years be fore the rates of interest ruling in England and in the United States spproximate much nearer than those now current, but it is pretty certain that they wil mever again be much farther apart. We are too @losely connected in our financial and commercial ope fations, and by the improvements im steam navigation oo near neighbors, to permit such a wide difference fm the vaiae of money to continue much longer. It is mot likely that the rate of interest in England wil; ome up to that now ruling here, or that ours will come Gewn to that now ruling in London, bat they will gradu ally, but steadily, approach each other, until the rate in each country will vary but the smallest fraction. It is entirely ovt of the question for such extreme rates to rule in cities so intimately allied {o Snancial rela Lendon, New York and San Francisco. In London four per cent is now the current rate; in New York seven to ten per cent, and in San Francisco thirty t» thirty six per cent. London and New York are only about sen Gays apart, with almost daily communication by steam e's. Loudon and San Francisco are only about thirty @aysapart, with .emi-monthiy commanigation by steam These three financial centres should have a more uniform standadof value for money. In London or New York there cannot be such # wide difference mach loog. er, and ag they approach cach other the money markets one as of each will be better regulated. Money will ultimately find rts level im value. and where it commands the high- est price, with equal seeurity, there will be the alters- tion. Four per cent imLendon is not so desirable as seven and tea per cent in New York, and we question if a further advance im the rate of interest by the Bink of England would in reality create much apprehensioa, In anticipation the effect might be slightly unfavorable, but as the movement becomes better understood, that would subside, ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity and value of certain articles, other than foreign dry goods, im- ported into this port during the week ending and including Friday, Sept. 16, 1858:— ComMsRCE OF THE PoRT ov NEW-YORK—WEEKLY IMPoRTS.
