So things re- mained anti! the 20th, when a telegraphic despatch oame from Santiago, stating that the Qnito had got upon a rock near Huasco—passengers and part of the silver saved. Next morning Mr. Lambert's small sorew steamer lirefly arrived, with the mail bags in a wet state and brought particulara of the wreck, and we, in consequence, deferred the publication of our paper to the present dais, there being no other steamer to take the mail. The Quito was sailing, on the nicht of the 10th inet, twelve miles from Hnasco, when sho strack pore opin: f oa a rock.and tho shock drove her ove hundred yards further, striking from one rock to another with such force a# to open her bottom im- | media‘ely. Monpay, August 29, 1353. The court convened at 11 A. M., the hourto which it was adjourred on Saturday. The court room was filled by an audience eagerly and anxiously awaiting the return of the jury. At length, at 114 A. M., the creaking of one of the lobby doors gave notice to the anxioos listeners that the twelve men by whose will the prisoner was to go free or suffer an ignominious punishment, and for whose retarn they were anx- ieusly looking, were now approaching. the Clerk:— Have you agreed upon a verdict? Answer—We have. Cierk—Who sha | say for you? Answer—Onur foreman. Clerk—Prisoner, rise up. Foreman, look upon the prisoner at the bar. What say you, is ho guilty or not gailty of the crime charged against him in the first count in the information’ Foreman—Nor ovuinty. Clerk—Guilty or not guilty on the second count? Foreman—Not guilty. Clerk—Guilty or not guilty on the third count? Foreman—Not guilty. Immediately upon the rendition of the verdict, the spectators testified their approbation by clapping their bands and ctamping upon the floor, which, after some little difficulty, was repressed by the offi- cers of the court, and order was restored. Comstock appeared but little agitated, and has, doring the trial, exhibited but little fear of the final result, although he has evidently felt the unhappy and un- pleasant position in which ho was placed. He re- ceived the congratulations of those in the vicinity where he was standing, among whom we noticed the attorney for the State and his associate, Mr. Terry. Thus has closed a caso which has attracted as much attention, at least in Fairfield county, as any other case which bas been tried in that county in years; and all who have heard and been present at tte trial, bave unanimously acquitted Mr. Comstock of any and all charges of recklessness and negligence on bis part, at the time of the occurrence of the Nor- walk disaster, Providence and Worcester Railroad Disaster, Examination before the Railrond Commis sleners in P,oviaence, THIRD ‘Day.
