At 11} P. M., the upper floor was entizely destroyed, and ‘the building brought down to @ lerei with the adjoining bouser, over which it bad originally stood higher by a floor or two. It was owing to this ciroumstance—its su- perior beight—that the other buildings for a loug time were preserved from destrustiun, as the walls of the Peerl Street Houre acted as @ tecce to keep in the flaaes. Yet, oon- fining our ideas to this view of the subject, it is dif- ficult to reconcile the fact with the weak and miser” able management of the whole concern. So many defects belong to the management, that it is difficult to tell where to commence a notice of them, or where to.end. » z Ist. There has been, thronghout, a paltry meanness shown respecting the sale and issue of their tickets. ‘Their excessive rigor would look as though they sus- pected every man who approached the building, to bea thief, and whe was trying to steal into their es. tablishmert on a thief’s errand. A gentleman in our presence approached the entrance on the Sixth ave" nue, with a lady and three children under his cere, the latter being under twelve years of age. He paid fifty centa for the lady, and twenty-five cents each for the children. Two of the child- ren passed the turn-stile separately, or in separate compartments of the wheel. The gentleman was then told that he would have to purchase another ticket for each of the children as they had entered separately, when they should have gone in togetber by twos in one space of the . Thus he had to pay fifty cents a piece for each of the chil- drev. If was done him, it was probably done with others. Why did not the receiver of tickets tell the children how to enter ? Why was not a notice stuck up telling them how to enter the ae ie and not wait till they were entrapped in the bulld- iny arr eg oer pd cents each ? Sa The int arrangements are on a scale of commensurate meanness. No check is given, while females and children are compelled to purchase such refreshments a4 they can get le, or without. If ice cream is called for, with latter is found to be common Croton, without ice. There are co convenient and easily accessible places provided for get! drinks of common Croton water; while boys ice water through the building at three cents a glans! Why do not the managers also licenre sellers of green corn, “all hot?” It might pay. 3d. There 1s little or no energy displayed in com- pleting the exhibition, and pac! remain for weeks unopened and uparranged. Nearly one third to one-fourth of the arrangements are incomplete.
