Your obedicnt servaat, GEO, NG. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONKY MARKET. Tavespay, August 18—6 P.M. ‘There was, this morning, more aciivity and groater buoyancy in the stock market, than we have noticed for some days past. There is eviteatly # better feeling among operators, The ciffereuce between cash stock and buyer's option has dwindled dowa toa fraction, At the first board, to-day, the purchases were uaasually large» and we understand outside speculators have come for- ward with a good deal of spirit sad confidence. The mo- ney mazket is gradually working easier. Capital is more freely offered, and the impression is daily becoming stronger that we are not so near ruin and dissolution as the rapid decline in’prices generally induood many to believe. In many faney stocks the bottom has undoubt- edly been pretty nearly touohed, for tha preseat. The turning poins in all of them many think canaot be for off. Such, at all events, is the opin- ion of a large class of outside speculators, and time will test its correctness. The fact that thereare heavy purchasers in the market may tend materially to arrest the downward movement, The war question is about the only one now agitating financial circles, and wide difference of opinion exists upon that point. Speculators in stock, and capitalists generally, are invariably more influevoed by anticipation than realities. We have al: ready been unfavorably affected by the political move. ments of European powers, and it is a question if the actual commencement of hostilities would immediately have a more injurious effect] than that already realized. All these things must be duly considered, and they doubt- less bave been, by parties involved in the stock operations of the doy. The war party is decidedly in the ascen- darcy, and its porition is, without doubt, = strong one; but it may be weakened by the next arrival from Europe. Most of the eperations in our stock moarket, for a rise, are based om the probability that the Turkish difficulties will be amisably settled. The risk is great; but if this view is correct, the result will richly repoy the risk On the other hand, the war | perty is most sanguine, and operate boldly upon the pro- babilities of a general European rapture. It is @ fair geme between the two parties, as the great question mow standa, aud those who prove to be right ia their anti- cipstions will reap a rich harvest. The variations at the First Board today, compared with prices current at the close yesterday, were as fol- lows:—Florevce and Keyport advanced 4 per cent: Ni- | caragua Transit {; Penmeylvania Coal 14; Cumberiaad 4; New York Central Railroad 1(; -yatal ce 3; Parker Vein {; Brie Railroad %{; Hodson Railroad : | Mazlem 1{, Cantom Company fell of 4; por ent; Michi. gan Central Railroad 1{. At the Second Board the mar. | ket was all up, and at the close the texdency was towards a further improvement. At the Mining Board to-day, the sales were as fol- lows :— 1700 Phenix Gold..060, 15; 50 N Carolina Copper 6% 150 N Carolia Copper.. 6 The receipts at the office of the Aesistant Treasurer of this port today, amounted to $268,443 15; payments, $90,044 §8—Balance, $3 289,332 33, We learn from reliable sources, that the Potomac Cop- per Company have recently added to the mines heretofore worked two mines in Polk county, Yensessee, near the Hiwassie and Tenneseee mines; and another in Guilford county, North Carolina, near the McGullock mine—all of which promise to equal anything in their respective neighborhoods. Mining captains, with all necessary means, have been sent to both places, to commence work immediately. If one half is true that has been told us of the copper veins in Polk county, Teonessee, and in Guil- ford county, North Carolina, it cannct be many months before the public, and expecially the holders of Potomac stock, will be agreeably surprised at the sudden and large advance in the price of said stock. For a year or two past, we have been hearing representations of im- mensely rich copper veins in the above districts, which were £0 much above anything discovered elsewhere, that we accepted them with many grains of allowance; but time, and actual results, seem to confirm the most ex- travagant statements ever put forth about them. The Potomae stockholders will, of courre, congratulate them- selves on their good fortune; and it is gratifying to the public to know that the managers of this company have made personal sacrifices, and have given up private ia- teresta, to make this stock even more than they, or any of their associates, ever promised or anticipated. We learn that the directors will prepare a statement of these mines in the course of a few weeks, which will no doubt be given to the public. The Baxk Commissioners of New Jersey having made report to the Chancellor that they had made an official inspection ot the ‘Traders’ Bank at Cape May,” and ‘Bank of America,’ Cape May, Court House, and have reason to believe that the said banks are not carrying on the business of banking in a bona fide manner, the Chanceilor issued an order to the said banks to show cause on Monday, the lithinst., why the said ayaocia tions should not be declared insolvent. The court was opened accordingly in Trenton, the State being repre- sented by Attorney General Thompson, and the banks by ‘William Halsted, Eeq. Upon application of the latter gentleman, alleging want of time for defence, the hear- ing of the case was postponed to Tuesday, the 20th inat, at Elizabethtown.
