FINANCIAL AND CUMMERCIAL, Ra eee MONKEY MAKKBE™, Pauway, August 5—6 P. M. ¥ The stock market was very much depressed at the opening this morning, and throughout the tendency of prices was dewnward. Large lots of stock were offered, ‘but could not be sold, except at prices which holders at present sre not disposed to aconpt. What they refuse now they may be glad to take next week. Most of the ‘wanractions in Erie to-day were for cash, and the pur- @hasers principally the bears, for delivery. This tended materially to sustain prices; but even with this the de- Preciation was steady from the opening to the close. From ‘the large purchases of Parkes Vein om time, buyer's op- ‘tion, we should think the bears might soon find them- aélyes in a tight place, if they were not particularly cau- Mous ia their operations, Railroad stocks appear to be in bad odor, and they are rapidly changing hands. It has been thoroughly demonstrated that they are bank- Yupt and rotten in their finances, te the very core; and ‘those whe have lived so long upon faith and hope have mbandoned all, and realized the best market price,- At ‘the first board to-day Morris Canal declined 4 per cent; Pennsylvania Coal, %; Florence and Keyport, %; Nica- Fagus, %; Cumberland Coul, 4; Parker Vein, 1; Crystal Palace, 1; Hudson Railzoad, 34; New York Central Rail- Toad, 34; Erie Railroad, 9; Harlem, %{; Stonington, %¢; Erie Income Bonds, 3. ‘At the Mining Board this morning there was not much Aetivity; 100 shares North Carolina Copper sold at 814 per cont; 100 Mimeral Copper Company, 234, eller 60; and 200 do do. at 2%. No escential slteration has occurred ia the position of the dry goods traffic since this day week. The country jobbers, more especially those from the West and South- have been the heaviest operators, though greater willing, ness to deal has been displayed by local buyers. Few orders have, so far, been received from Northern merchants, who—thanks to the matchless facilities of communication between their homes and this metropolis—are never in a hurry to reach New York thus early in the season. We are, nevertheless, a little surprised to learm of their tardi- ness just now, when, though goods are abundant, they are dear, and yet very apt to appreciate. We presume that they have been unavoidably detained, partly by the necessity of winding up the spring business, and partly by preparations for visiting this city, whither, in conse. quence of the attractions of the Crystal Palace, most of them will be accompanied by their families. Their absence, however, is not likely to be prolonged, as the autumn’s progress must drive theminto us, When they do arrive they will greatly augment the activity that at present characterises the trade, and contribute to the realization of the hopes generally entertained by factors, who thivk thst as our wants have been so rapidly en- larged, even the unusually weighty quantity of goods now here and ordered for future delivery is apt to prove quite moderate, if not inadequate, and that consequent- ly prices are sure to be supported, if not improved. We can testify that the fall campaign was never commenced under moze favorable auspices, and should ordinary akill reer 0 and care be exercised in ita direction, we shall be much 1,654,451 | disappointed if it fails to reach a successful end. brace Brown shestinge and shirtings aro ia fair aupyly and 1,131,129 | geod demand, within the annexed range:— 300, ‘Width.
