In raising the required capital tre Association met with but slight difficulties. Shares were taken by over one hundred and fifty persons and firms. ‘The nex! impor- tant step was to secure the co-operation and evubdtenance of the federal goverument. It was eseutial in order to obtain extensive support from the manufacturers of Ea- rope, that their goods should be edmitted duty free. The proper department of the goveroummt of the United States treated the matter with cordial liberality; and en the 24th doy of May, Mr. Maxwell, Collector of the port of New York, made a written communication to the pre- sideni of the association, stating that the building, when erected, would be made a bonded warehoure, so as to re- ceive the goods free of duty, while on exhibition, Tre foreign and domestic departments were organized soon after, and the architects, engineers, &c., appoimted. Va- rious designs for the buildiog were precented, from among which that of Mr. Carstensen was selected. Hie plan was adopted om the 26th of last August. DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING. We stall now go into the cetutls of the site acd sine of the building.
