THE RIOT IN THE NINTH WARD—FURTHER EVIDENCE AGAINST THE RIOTERS. Yesterday Justice Stuart took the evidence of three more citizens, residents in the vicinity of the recent riot im the Ninth ward. They go to show that the stage driver was not to blame in the matter, and also show the excitement and outrageous conduet of the rioters, in their ill-treatment of the stage horses, corroborating the same facts as detailed by other witnesses, already published. The following is the evidence:— ‘Williom Nangle of No. 1 Troy street, sworn, says—I was present at the riot on the 4th instant, in Abingdon square, and at the time saw the members of the Hibernian Socieiy about the stage and on the sf . and bearing the horses; the Mare! who was on horse! , and who deponent is informed is James Sandus, came uo aud said, ** pull the eon of a b—h off ;” some of the society men were in, and some were on the stage at the time; and I also saw the driver hit with a stone. Mr. Timothy L. West, of No. 23 Eighth avenue, also testified to witnessing the riotous conduct of the members of the +ociety, and corrobora‘es the previous witnesser, who swear they saw a number of the ricters beat aod ill: treat the stage horses, and also violently ausault the driver. The witness adds that he saw several ladies in the stage, and when he went to save the women, the crowd of ricters rushed up towards him and called out, “Kill the d—d son cf a b—h,” and several advanced to- wards him. when he found it was necessary to run off to "youn Houghtaline, of No. 118 Hammond street, fo. mons worn, says—I was present at the rict on the 4th instant, and saw the driver of the stage, and the horses also, beaten by the rioters. Marshal who had the sword I saw ineite his men by calling out to them to bring the stage driver from the rtage, and kill the d—d son of a b—n. I did not see the stage driver do anything, except that he was about driving across the street at the end of the pro- mm, which was all I saw him do to provoke the as- | rauit upon him. A STABBING AFFRAY ON BOARD TWE SHIP JACOB A. WESTERVELT—THE MATE OF THE SHIP FATALLY INJURED—ARREST OF SEAMEN. At about two o’clcek yesterday morning » desperate affrey took place botween the erew on board the ship Jacob A. Westervelt, lying at the foot of Dover street. Mr. W. Wilson, the mate of the ship endeavored to sup- suppress the disturbances, and in so doing received two stabs in the body from « rheath knife, inflicted by one of the sailors. The wounds are located in a very dangerous part of the body—one in the back, and the other in the side. The latter is believed to ha penetrated the lungs, and will in all probability caw o ward, on ac netting fire to « James Murphy. witusted' is Fifteenth and 4ix- teenth street, between avenues A and B. The accused waa xeon by Smi:h, an} several other witnesses ‘to be in the stable when the firy ocourred during the af terncon, and immediately prior to the fire being diseover- ed. The accused was seen to come from that vortion of the stable. Nocther person wes seen in that vicinity about the time of the fire. The fire having been dis covered immediately, and no'withstaodiag the indaama ble character of the materials, the fire department suc ceeced in extinguisbing tbe flamer, and thus save a very extensive coufisg ation, as the stables were adjoining lumber yards, The accused was takem before Justice Sturt. who cemmittea him to prison for trial, cChty Intelligence. _ Tae WeaTnre —The following was the state of the thermometer yesterday during Taree dlffecent periods of ny — 9A 3P.M. 85° 16° The windat 9A M. avd 3 P.M. 5 M. wassouthwest, It wae a fine clear day. Tmxp Avenues RauRoap.—Yesterday mornii dent cecured on the above named railroad, in Chat street, by which Joseph Carrol, one of the laborers om- ployed in paving the track, was very severely injured about tke head and shoulder, more particularly about the former, which ia badly cut at the back and sida, taking three eg Beata that were afterwards dressed at the New York Hospital, where the injured man now lies. under the care of Dr. Derby. Another man likewise bad his avkle badly hurt, who was conveyed hore; but bis mame we have not been able to ascer’ain. The (sad mary caure of the accident was the excavation that has been made in the railway track in Chathain street, near the Natloval theatre, for the tage of doing eome- thing to the Croton water pipe. As a matter of course. there ix a large gap at the place, and it is neual for the drivers of the cars to ualoose their horses before urriving at this soot, and to allow tne cer to go over by itself from the impetus that had been previously given to it. Inthe accounts that have been given of this accident, it ia stated that the driver of car No. 22 did not uploose his horses, but tried to jump them over the gap, when they missed and fell into the bole, The driver, 1t is said, them unloosed them, and that the borre- bolted off down the street, knocking down the above: ed individual and another man. This ac- coust, we believe, is in many reapects incorrect. In the first place, the horses were detached from the car and standing on the side of the excavation while the car was 1g over it ‘they were pushed iuto the hole y & wagon which wae passing loaded with lumber, and, on being extrica‘ed ran a short distance to where two men were paving the street, and the pole struck oue of them, Joseph Carrol, injuring bim severely, but not dangerou Unlers great care is taken by the drivers of the cars oa the Third avenue railroad, we anticipate that a great many accidents will occur in Chatham street, The tn- cline of the track along the above named street, from the Park and as far as Pearl street, is very steep, and we have observed that the drivers, even when going at moderate pace, have the utmost difficulty in arresting the speed of the oar. The same remark holds good for the other end. from Chatham square to Pearl street, where the incline is necessarily very great, but, on ac: count of this part being wider collisions are not so likely to cecur tthe part below Peari strest, where the traffic is so immense and the street so narrow. It will require the utwost circumspection on the part of the drivers, and we hope that they wil show it. Tue Mrurary.—On Thurrday evening last an election of officers belonging to the City Guard took place at the armory of the above company, 639 Broadway, which re- eulted in the following unanimous choice:—Thomas T, Ferris elected Captain of the company; James L. Waugh, lat Lieutenant; Jno. H. Waterhouse, President. Tae BatmiMorz Firsmev.—Since Thursday fresh ar- rangements bave been made, by which the above com- pavy will tase a different route in their departure from what was ntated by us in yesterday morning’s Heratp Invtead of going by the Cen'ral Railroad they took the Philadelphia route via the Camden and Amboy Railroad, ding by the John Potter steamboat, which qill ve pier No. 2 North river, adjoining tho battery, at 2 o’clock P.M. It iss powerful en. gire, having 9% inch cylinders, and mans about fifty men. Firns.—Last night, about half past eight o’clock, much consternation was excited in the neighborhood of the lowor part of Washington street, by au alarm of fire pro- ceeding from No 59 in the above named street, which, however, fortunately, did not do any great amount of mischief. The house in which tbe fire originated is of a larger size then ordinary, being fifty feet deep and thirty- one feet wide. and is let out as a lodgiog house, occupied by several fumilies, who were naturally very much rmed at th's urexpected outbreak The ground floor ir divided off into two stores, oue of which is oceupied by Michsel O’Covreil, as a grocery and liquor store, and the otber by Michael and Hugh O'Neill, as a liquor store only. eve latter rent the whole house, and sub let the upper part of it to the other parties, who are inmates of the place, in different tenements. The baseuent, in which the fire originated, is cecupied as a dwelling place by Lawrence Hute. and it was in the rear of this lower part of the building thet the fire began, spreading up wards to the rear of O'Neill's store, where the principal damage was doue. Some time elapsed from the breaking out of the fire, before the alarm waa given or the engines arrived, but, when once there. the firemen quickly spbdued the flames, and in the course of anbour the conflagration was entirely extinguished O'Neil! who is the principal sufferer. estimates the damage done to his proverty at about $200; he is, however, in- sured in the Broadway Insurance office for $1,500. aeum that will consequently cover far move than his loss Hute, in whore basement the fise originated, is nogreat death. Captain Ditcbett, of the Fourth ward police, was notified of the affair, and proceeded with » posse of his potcemen om board the ship and arrested the follow- 1 named sailors, who were ail more or less under the influence of liquor:—Daniel Suith, James Crosby, Peter Campbell, William Robinson, James Hines, Andrew Carroll, Andrew Augustus, and Thomas Rosch. ’ The pri- soners were conveyed before Justice Bogart, who con- mitted them to prisen, there to await the resuit. The mate was conveyed to the New York Hospital. ‘The ship, it seems, arrived on Thursday afternoon, and the tailors procured liquor, brought it on board, and while carousing together in the steer a fight ensued between them. The mate went dowa f-r the purpose of 4 quelling the disturbance, and received the injury. One or two of the steerage passengers say can identify the ssilor who iaflicted the stabbing onthe mate, Up to last evening Mr. Wilson was very low, and much doabt existed as to his surviving through the night. An Affray between Two Negrocs—One Stalbed and sent to the Hospital.—On Thursday evening 40 altercation took luce between two negroes named Joba Price and Sam ‘reeman, at No. 27 Leonard street, in which the former inflicted @ severe stab with a knife, which it is thought bas penstrated the lungs, and will prove fatal. in- jwed man’s wound was dressed by Dr. Kilbourne, and then he was sent to the hospital. The accused was ar- rested by officer Daset, of the Fifth ward police, who con veyedhim before Justice Bogart, and he was committed to the Tombs to await the result. The Stabbing Case in Second Street.— Yesterday Justice Wood visited the house of George don, No, 192 Second street, for the purpose of taking his affidavit rela- tive to a dangerous injury he received on the 20th of June last, by being stabbed. It appears by Mr. Hagendon's fence that he was in ® grocery store adjoining the porter house, sitaated in the above named premises. A listurbance occurred in this baeement between a party of men, ard the witners left the grocery store to ascertain what the difficulty was abou’, and saw a crowd collected in and about the porter house, who were using kaives and iron bars freely, among this crowd was Cooper Hester, who was fighting desperately with another man: Hester sppesred much excited, and letting go of his antagonist run into the porter house, seized # knife, and with it at Hagendon, who be mist vious antagonist; 14 off the blow and received a severe wound im the ‘arto and another in bie breast, which have coofiaed him to bie room up to the present time, At the time, Hester was arcesied by officer Sierney, of the Seventeenth ward, on the facta the magistrate held him to bail in the sum of $2,000, in default of which he was committed to prison for trial. Arrest of a Dishonest Steward.—Officer Kiely, of the First ward, yesterday arrested a colored man named Ben: jamin D, Golding, a steward and cook on board the xchooner Judge Baker, of Virginia, Captain Audrew Bo gert. charged with robbing the ca) 6 tramk of $210, consisting of two $100 bank bills on the Valley Bank of Virginia, anda $10 bill on the Seventh ward bapk, of thix city. It seems that while the schooner was lying at the port of 4mithfield, Virginia, the negro, who wae en) as cook and steward, forced open tha csp tein’s truvk, ard stole therefrom the money as above named, Nothing was done to crimiaaie the negro at Virginia, but still « suspicion rested on him, and on the arnvul of the rchooner here the capi in caused his ar- rest, and the prisoner was conveyed to the First ward police station. There his person was searched but the money could not be fe 4 oO was then dis charged, ond had shaken bands with the captain, bidding big good bye, when officer Kiely, be. lieving fp bis own mind that the negro was guilty, requested to make another search of the nogro’s pereon, <Accerdingly, the accused was again stripyed Of Lis clothing. aud thia time the money was found tied one corner of his under shirt one fact of Rndivg the money srtounded ali present, and the negro then ac- bsowledge4 ‘bia guilt. Although the fire was not by any means ex- tensive. it created much covfusioa, for the row of houses, of which the building io which the fire burst ont forma one, are densely inhabited by families of laoring Irish, and on the opposite side of the «treet are sitnated the large potash etores of Cassidy & Palmer. ‘On Thuriday sfternooa a fire broke out in the ship timber yard of Hiscoit & De Voe, atthe foot of Six- teenth treet, East river, by which a amounting to $800,000 wan ireurred i the Eleventh, and Lieut Clark, of the Thirteenth wards, @ach with a section of men, were present at the fire. Capte, Whigan and Flandremer were also preseat with sections of officers. Fink aT THE Quarantine, Starks Isiayp—Six House BURNED.—A fire broke out on Friday morning, about three o'clock, in the grocery store of Michael McKeon. ‘The upper part wes occupied by Mrs. Ferry and a German family, and owned by Pr. Harcourt; the boure and all the furniture were entirely destroyed The adjoining house, occugied by Thomas Devlin aod 3.
