MONEY MARKET. Tumapay, June 28—6 P. M. ‘The stook market was not so buoyant to-day, and there ‘Bppeared to be considerable anxiety to realize, even a: the deciine. We notice more transactions for cash than usual, From the opening to the close of the frst board ‘the tendency was downwards. Morris Canal fell off 3 per “sent: Canton Company, 34; Nicaragua, 1%; McCullock Gold, ‘<; Comberland, 3; Parker Vein, 3; Harlem, 14; Hudson River Railroad, 34; Erie Railroad, 1. It appears impossi- ‘Die to sustain any advance in ths fancies. Fuvorable ad- vices from Europe or California may produce» moderate mpeculative excitement, and the bulls may work off a few Dundred shares, at a alight improvement in the market walue, but it doos not last long. A day or two at the anost uses up the movement, and prices settle down ‘again to starting points. The season is decidedly against uny activity in stocks. We must make due allowances for this. If meney continue: abundant and cheap, s spe- culative excitement of considerable importance may mark the opening of the fali, but it will not show iteeif in the ‘pid worn out fancies now in the market. They have been floating about so long frow hand to hand, without any- ‘thing having been realized, except in the ups and dowas of the market, that speculators are getting tired and sick of ‘them all. They are more dispoved to take hold of new things —somethicg frech, something in the shape of fancy stocks, which have a wide margic for am imprevement, anda small margin for depreciation. The mining stocks of the day possess these deaisble qualities, and they are rapidly absorbing capital, The most enterprising speculators ia tbe stock have turned their attentionjto the developement ‘of the mineral wealth of the country, and of the maay mining companies receutly organized, but comparatively Sow will prove utterly worthless, Of the mew copper stocks now on the market, the most prominent are the North Carolina, Menassas, McUullock, and the Dolly Hide. Each is well managed, each possesses extraordinary richness and extent of ore, acd each must ultimately be immensely productive. So far as supplies of copper are woncerned, these companies will turn out more of the yaw material than all the other copper companies in the country combined. There probably never will be a more Javorable time to take hold of these concerns thaa the ‘present, acd those who wirh to realize the greatest profit on the smallest investment, either in the shape of pre- wiums or dividends, shouid avail themselves of the oppor- Aunities now presenting theaselves in mining stocks, The wompanies we have named above will stand any reverse fin Gimancial affairs; no revulsion however severe or wide- mpread could more than temporarily affect them unfavora- ply. Eogeged in the production of a material absolutely necessary in the operations of commerce, their prosperity mand productiveness cannot be otherwise than of the most ‘permanent character. At the mining board to day the rales were as follows :— 5 she Min’ta Co; 200 160 shs. Phoenix Gold ...13¢ 200 “ N.C. C'r, b’ 0% §=80 * M’Cullock. .930,.6 At the clove, for Mineral Company 2% bid, 314 asked . Ulster 234 bid, 2% asked ; Fulton 1% bid, 2 asked ; Hi: wassee 45, bid, 5 asked. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Trearurer of this port to-day, amonnted to $187,601 75; paymeats $14,800—Ddalance $8,569,797 69. ‘The Commercial Bank of Albany has declared a semi. annual dividend of four per cent. The Cleveland, Pains: wille and Ashtabula Railroad has declared « semi-annual dividend of five per cent. The Erie and No:theast Rail yoad an annual dividend of eight per cent ‘There has not been much demand for foreign exchange for remittance by the steawship Asia for Liverpool, from this port to-morrow. Bills on London are quiet, at 954 29% per cent premium, with but « moderate supply. ‘The steamer will take out # large amount of specie, prin- cipally in gold ingots. At the second board this afternoon, the transactions were limited. There were ssles of MoCullock Gold sad Copper stock at 634, sellers 30 days, and 634, buyers 60 €ays ; Parker Voin improved % per cent, Reading Rail. road 34. ‘The July dividend on th: bonds of the city of Memphis, Sasued to the Memphis and Charleston Railroad Company, will be paid at No. 40 Wall street, on and aftor the Ist of July. in relation to the corfttruciion of the Erie and New ‘York City Railroad, the Ellicottville Union, ofthe 17th inst., says:— ‘This road ia no longer a watter of discussion, so far as its Giyal construction is concerned It is, we’ presume, queers understood where its points of termination are, and Little Valley. The whole length of the road is eighty miles, and treretees through thix State, one of the finest apritultural regions west of the Catskill moun _ Its weatern terminus, Erie,'is the commercial me- 1s of western Peartylvenix, and affords really and eet ‘the oxly harbor where vessels may enter and la in rd ty, tbls side of Cleveland. Its inhabitants an eve: ‘brifty, and porsess the right sort of ere to iy proj ject 10 completion which they emb: in The Eto New York Cury Railroad, when Aaised, -will be the connecting livk between the city of New York and the great West and Sou'hwest, and will offer induce aments to travel and transportation which will mske it one of the most important thoroughfares now in contem. plation. Its officers are men of wealth, energy, aud prac: tical every dey business talents, and no such word as “fail” is known to them Judge CbambeMain, the pres dent, is one of the wealthiest men in western New ¥ rk, and the alacrity avd faithfulness with which he thus far dischary the duties of President of the Erie and New York City Railroad, is the best evidence in athe world that his wealth is to be made doubly valuable to him elf and beneficial t> tbe public by pushing forward thin great enterprise. He is a livivg represen.ative of the hardy yeomanry of this county, and as such com- amanda the respect of all classes of our citizens. It is the impression in certain circles that the semi- avnual dividendjon the stock of the New York and Erie Teailread Company, due on the 1st of July.proximo, has merely been postponed to October. This belief tends ma- terially to sustain the market price of the stock; but those who have and still continue to act upon it will make a fatal mistake. The next dividend is indefinitely post- poncd. No man, in the board of management or out of it, fen tell when another dividend will be paid,—or rather when any dividend will be carsed We annex a letter, re- weived a day or two since, fom Elmira, giviag some very important facts relative to the position and prospects of abe company,-—its part anc present management, and the poliey pursued by those who should have bad oo other object in view but the best interests of thoig who have entrusted them with their property :— T0 THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. Evaara, June 26, 1853. 1 observe in the money column of yout paper occasional strictures touching the policy of the New York and Erie Ra pany, 1 rejoice thes there are those who take interest enough in its success te expo-e the incapacity or folly of those who have instituted the fatal policy now pursued, for it ‘will doubtless have the effect to exhibit the true state of abe case. And here let it be said, if there appear: anything like bitterness or severity iu the following lines it is the mag- nitude of the subject rather than personal feeling that Gictates it. In all cundor the questi.n should be put to the stock- holders: whether their road is ‘operated to subserve the interests of the present directioa and their friends, or that of the stockholders at large, its rightful onners—a question to them of great interest, and of which they will be fully seeible herestter if not now, for one thiag tony be fully relied on, its present management is moot dissatrous, as any one way sve who will the trouble 410 invest:gate the subject on the Western division, from Hornelleviie to the terminus at Dunkirk, The great ma ing off in amount of its pts, in view of thos are best acquainted with the facts, have a legiti: HH totan scenenter Cause, whieh all nan of good judgment clearly forsee; for nothing less than such » cause could have given rise to the humiliating fact that the present New York and Krio Railroad Company, atter two years ‘opportunity to perfect their arravgements, do not convey 98 many through passengers to New York, from Baffalo and Dupkirk combined, as they did from ‘Dunkirk alone immediately after the opening of the road. Why ia thin? Many thiogs growing out of the same cause might be stated; it may, however, be snfiicient here to rey ina few ‘words—-for there will be sufficient opportu- nity to give reliable fact» if what is bere stated be de- vied—that the managecs of the road seem not to have comprebended, or wilfully shut their eyes to the fact, {hate the natural termivur of the road and arrangements west thereof is to them the aii important thing: and, in view of ite present operations, 1: dovs really seem es if some evil dirpose: ius hed been en' successful in giving foe intra 9 wrong direction, Allow me to sey & word of this spring's business arrangemonts, ‘They have abandoned, in vilect. one hundred aud twenty: Feven miles of their road, (th estern divirion,) built at an enormous expense to the stockholders ao opted a road owned by another company, that termiaates at Baf- falo; and to mabe this arraogement subserve their pur- pose and caure the stcck thereof to rice in the market the benefit of its stockholders, have directed their agents in all the Western cities to ticket passengers from ir respective points to the city of New York via Huf- jalo, instead of Dunkirk, the natural terminus of their own road.
