Pst FRaTersrry.—The amnual convention ef the above fraternity, consisting of delegates from the nine different chapters, situated at Unien Schenectady, N.Y.; Williams College, Wil- liametewn, ; Middlebury College, Vermont; Wea- leyam University, Mivdletown, Conn.; Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Me.; Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y.; Colum: bia College, New York city, aad Princeton College, Prince- tom, N.J., was held yesterday, for the first time in this elty, at the Irving House. A 1ull delegation was present, consisting of twenty seven delegates, namely, three from each chapter. An address was delivered by H. M. Need- ham, A.B., of Union College, and in the evening there at which about one hundred aud e' members of the fraternity were the festivities being kept up to a late hour. Pai fraternity was instituted in 1941, by the stu- dents of Union College, Schenectady, and has rapidly spread from the above small mumber to that of about 350 members, who ace be that of being a student #f arts in any of the colleges in which a chapter of the fraternity exists, and the unani- mous votes of the whole chapter are necessary to obtain the privilege. The object aimed at by the above body, is that of promoting mutual friendship and intimacy among the fellow students of the colleges in which the fraternity exists, as well as of encoursging the moral, intellectual and social improvements of the members. The badze of membership 18 a neat gold ornament, worn generaily on the veat, consisting of the Greek letter Chi, with the ether Greek letter Psi underneath from which two Greek characters the fraternity derive their appellation. The first named letter is likewise studded with jets, and on the lower pert of the otber etter there are a skull and cross bones, with three daggers above. On the top of the same letter there is engraved a cross, surrounded by a circle. Volunteers held their usual mongbly meeting last night, at the Mercar Hoase, corner of M and Broome streets, but nothing of in- terest transpired beyond the ordinary routine business. Ferociovs Assavit—Ear Bir Orr.—Yesterday evening, & man named James Brown, who had been employed as barkeeper at a public house kept by a person of the name of Williams, at No. 14 Dover street, was ferociously as- saulted by a sailor, second mate to one of the line of packets that sail regularly between this port and Lon- who in the course of the rencontre that occurred, bit part of Brown’s ear off. No cause can be alleged for this brutal violence, as taere had not been any misun- derstanding previourly bewween the yparties—the ac who was personally Imown to the other man, but with whoee name be was unacquainted, baving in the course of conversation, without any ostensible reason, struck Brown a severe blow in the eye, and afterwards, as mentioned above, bit part of his ar off. The guilty party was arrested immediately by the police, and the injured man conveyed to the City Hospital, where the part of the ear that had been bit off was closely sewed on to the uninjured portion, by the Hospital Surgeon, and he was in a fair way of reoovery last night. ALagM oF Firm—About 8 o'clock last evening, an alarm of fire was raised, caused by the appearance of flames that proceeded trom the ready made clothing atore occupied by Vandervilt & Co, No 81 sulton street, corner of Gold street. {t seems that one of the parties Foren pas lighted a segar in the store, and thrown the paper on one side, among a pile of wrapping paper at the of the counter, which immediately bacst iato a fiame, and caused an immediate alarm. I¢ was extin- guished before the engines had arrived, and fortanately no damage was done. At the first alarm, several engines had started for the place where the fire was supposed to from, but as just observed, it was extinguished their assistance was required. Arreurr at Svicioz—A man named John McCaffray, residing at 98 Beekman street, while laboring under de lirium tremens, attempted, on Tuesday last, to cut his throat, which he partially effected with a razor. Medical assistance was called in. and the wound, which was rather dapgerous—the windgipe being partially severed was immediately dressed. Yesterday it was considered expedient to send the wounded man to the City Hospital, whither he was conveyed ia charge of police officer Ni thaniel Cavanagh, of the Second ward, and is now uader the care of Dr. Peters. Arramrt at Drowxinc —On Monday afternoon, about 6 o'clock, a man, who refused, when rescued afterwards, togive his name, attempted to drown himself by jump. ing into the water from off the pier at the foot of Ha- mersley street. He was reecued by three citizens, named Peter Doyle, John Corlus aud Richard Roach, wh» brought him'to the station house of the Eighth police district. He was afterwards conveyed home to his resi- dence, at 190 Chambers street. Pockgt-PICKING TaicKs.—Mr. Gilbert Jones, residing at 18 Market street, had his wallet taken from his hand on Monday afternoon, by one of that class called watch stuffers, with which he run off at the utmost speed. Mr. Jones pursued him, and after running some distance caught the thief, from whom he recovered his money. In the meanwhile s coplederate of the above evidentiy for some bad design, dropped a watch into Mr. Jones’ peoket, when the two made good their retreat. Mr. Jones went in search of an officer, to whom he haaded over the watch. Accipent.—On Tuesday morning, about nine o'clock, an accidest oceurred at Guion & Boardman's foundry, at the foot of Eighth street. East river, by which one of the workmen, named Thomas Tully, was severely injured. Arrest of Juvenile Delis the police court yeater- day presented quite a juvenile appearance, consequent upon the policemen of the various wards arresting all small boys found loafing and playing about the docks and markets. Between forty and fifty were taken befure the court, their ages averaging from five up to ten years. The majority of the boys were very dirty and ragged- looking ; some of them had no parents and many others who had stated they bad not seen them for eral weeks, having slept in coal boxes, on the decks, au markets. Out of the above number over twenty of these boss were brought from the Third ward, and about the same number from the Second ward. Under th yw law, pow that the asylum ‘or eee delinquents has been completed om Blackwell’s Island, the magistrates have commenced the good work of relieving the city of all the idle vagrant boys whg are daily growing up in vice and wickedness. It appears that the boys are committed, prier to being sent to the asylum on the Island, to’a temperary reception place situated at No. 77 Grand street, when the magistrate sends the parents notice that their child is under arrest, and that unless they are able t> take better care of their children, the public authorities will take charga of them and place them‘in the juvenile asylum. This plan, if properly carried out, will be the means of saving many child from ruin. Charge of Maiming —Oficer Brown, of the Third dis- trict police court, yesterday arrested a young man ‘named William Bapp, ou # charge of assaulting John W. Hil. of No. 150 Clinton street, and biting off his ear. It sesma that William Bapp and his brether were going along Grand etreet, on Tuesday, nd one of them struck Mr. Hill, and on bis trying to defend himaelf, the accused seized hold of him and bit off his ear. Marshal Rakielewitz, of No, 24 North William street, arrested a Germau named Heory Lang alias “Painter’’—the latter name he derived from bis business, being a paister—charged with break ing into the premixes of James Prentice, 1 Chambers street, up stairs and stealing therefrom quantity of ma- thematical instruments, together with one gold and two silver medals, awarded to Mr. Prentice by the American Institute, fer the best mathematical workmanship. The property’ stolen was valued at $400, and after the arrest was made Mr. Rakieliwita ascertained the whereabouta of the stolen property, and found it secreted in a German lager bier shop in Centre street. The rogue and the stolen property were conveyed before Justice Welsh, who committed the sesused to prison for trial. An Indecent Assault.—Officer Sutton, of the Third dis. trict court, yesterday arrested a man named George P. Brown, on Tt. of committing an indecent assault on the person of Louisa Flagg, a young girl, 15 years of age. The accused denied the churge. Notwithstanding however, the trate, (Justice Welsh,) held him to bail in the sum of $500.
