Wastixcron, April 14, 1853, Im the Gardner trial to day, Captain William Gates testified that he was the civil and military Governor of the Department of Tamaulipas frem November, 1846, dur- ing the war, until June, 1848. Dr. Garduer came to Tampico im March, 1847; said’ he bad just arrived from the inte- wior, and wished employment as a physician; witness placed him in charge of the hospital at Tamaulipas. Hearing of an insurrection about to take place soon after, Dr. Gardner, by his direction, made excellent arrange- ments for the defence of the hospital; Gardner remained there, with the exception of three months abseace on eave, until the 24th June, 1848, when he went away with the troops; witness identified copies of his official orders to Gardner; witness went up the river Tampico, in a steamboat of 180 ton ef one hundred and ten miles, to Teuasneg , the fording Place of the great road leading to San Luis Potosi; hi also ascended the river Panuco, in a steambcat, sixty miles; identified maps of these rivers made from his own obrervations and those of the topographical engineers; rdner was actively employed while there as paysician and assistant surgeon, and on one occasion he sent him ‘op an expedition; saw him at Tampico almost daily; knew nothing tbat would tarnish his reputation in the slightest degree; had the highest admiration of him as a gentle- msn and ag sgnyaa ; he was the most wonderful man he ever beheld. Mr. Larned, clerk in the Freseury Department under wy Corwin—Was a judge at Tampico; knew Gard- ner there; raw and recognized him on his return; trav- elled with him from Philadelphia to New York, when he went to Europe. Captain Lewis Carr, an officer in the Mexican war—Wai in Tampico in June and July, 1847; Gardner was in charge of the hospital, and performed an operation on hig foot. Witness formed a high opinion of his skill ag a sur- gecn; saw him here in 1849 and '50. acestipanied him Europe; was there when Gardner received a newapa- per conteining the charges against him; on hearing from the District Attorney, he declared his iatention of imme- dia‘ely returning to the United States, and caused $10 060, which tad been placed to his eredit at George Peabody's, of London, to be put to the credit of Corcoran & Riggs. Me Court then adjourned. The Health ot Vice President King. Mosie, April 14—9 A. M. Vice President King,ince his arrival here, has been afiiicted with severe spells of coughing. Last night he vested well, and seemed decidedly better this morning; | but the cough has returned. Should he, however, be no worse, he will go up the river to his plantation on Sa- turday. The Tehuantepec Contract Ratified. New Onteans, April 13, 1853, The rchooner Bonita, from Vera Cruz, brings a special messenger with the treaty lately signed by Judge Conk. Jing, our Minister to Mexico, and the Mexican Commis- sioners, guaranteeing to Messrs. Sloo & Co, the neutrality ead posession of the Tehusntepes trancit reute, whitch was ratified on the 28th ult. From Philadelphia, SEVERE BLOW—THE RINK MURDER—TNE " HEMP- FIELD RAILROAD. Puurapenvma, April 14, 1853. A severe blow took place this afternoon, with thunder and lightning. Atin roof was torn from Edwards’ new hotel on Bread street, below Chesnut, and portions were thrown nearly a square dis‘ant. The roofs and upper part of four stores on Delaware avenue, near Vine street, were blown down— Washington Russell, who was passing at the time, was seriously injured. Early tids morning, the various persons who saw the man leave Rink’s store on the afternoon of the murder, were taken into Spring's cell for the purpose of identifica tion. They all, with but one exception, agree that the prisoner’s general appearance resembled that of the per- aon they saw. One witness was positive in his identifica- tion. Subsequently, Spring sent for the Grand Jury, * and volunteered the following statement of his connec- tion with the Rink murder :—‘‘As he was passing the store during the afternoon, he heard a cry of murder, went in, and as Le did so, aman with bushy whiskers rushed out; aw Rink lying on the floor, who exclaimed he was killed; assixted him up, and then ran in pursuit | of the murderer; followed him down Chesnut. street and lost sight of him in Kighth street. Tho Maine Liquor law was lost last night in the Legia- lative Aseembly, by a vote of 82 against, it to 28 for it. Mr. Meagher in New Orleans. Nuw Ogteans, April 12, 1363, Mr. Meagher, at the particular request of @ number of our citizens, delivered « lecture on Monday, on the “Poli tical affairs of Ireland in 1844.” It was the most eloquent discourse yet delivered by Meagher in America, and was zeosived by a crowded audience with great applause. He hee wade a triumphant display here throughout, aad has attracted hundreds of enthusiastic friends. He now goes to Baton Rouge, by «pecial invitation from the Gov- ernor and Legislature of Louisiana. Destruction of a Carpet Factory by Fire. Bostox, April 14, 1853, The American carpet factory in Roxbury was destroyed by fire at three o’clock this morning. The building was four stories high, and was occupied by Eliphalet Baker Koq., for the minufacture of Brussels, Kidderminster, and other carpets. The lower + tory was used in part asa storehouse, and contained a valuable lot of wool. Loss ertimated at $200,000, of which one-third was covered by ance. The fire was the work of incendiaries. The Susquchannah Bridge, &o. Bavrimony, April 14, 1853, “ The Susquebasnah Bridge bill passed the Muryland Senate to-day, by a vote of 13 to 3. It does net need the Governor's Fignature, and is now a law.
