Police Intelligence. ET. of the Nineteenthward, on no! us thieves, called James Brien and Thomas Desmond, chai with stealing from the premises of bir. Henry D. Caldwell, at Ravens- ‘wood, Island, two firkins of butter, together with fresh and other pi y, valued in all at $45; yhich the rogues conveyed from the premises in boats, hired by them evidently for that express purpose. rogues, when conyeyed before Justice Stuart, were at once identified by the magistrate to be the two ms who, three weeks previously, he had committed Eetwo months’ imprisonment in the penitentiary on Blackwell's Island, as common night thieves and vagrants. : é The accused parties did not pretend to demy their guilt; | and when asked by te . ware New, the; . effet their escape from the penitentiary, Desmond sai that after they had been on the island s couple of weeks, ‘ene of the deputy keepers, whom he designated by name, told them that they could be let go for $3 each, Ac- cordingly O’Brien sen’ word to his father for the required sum; and, in a few days, Betsey O’Brien, the prisoner's sister, came up, paid the ony, and they were both al- lowed to escape. These facts the prisoners state can be proved by other witnesses. Justice Stuart, however, says that the prisoners may, perchance, tell the truth, their story may, or may not, be true. But, says the Justice, there is one thing well known—that a number of convicts are almost weekly found off the island before their term of sentence expires. The magistrate intends to make a full investigation Tite the charge, and if any bribery or corruption of any character exists among the officials having charge of the convicts, the parties implicated musi be presented to the tribunal having jurisdiction in such matters. The woy the thieves managed their depredations was to hire Doate at the foot of Forty-cighth street, then row across the river to Ravenswood, plunder the premises of Mr. Caldwell, and return to the foot of Sixty-tifth street; there one of the boats became disabled on « rock. It seems that Fenton and Knight quarrelled, and commenced to fight; and while they were engaged in the affray, Kiernan came up, drew a fe and inflicted a dangerous stab in the ab- domen of Fenton, and then ran off. An alarm was given, the officers came upand arrested Knight, and subsequeat ‘esught Kiernan. Dr. Harden! was called, dressed e wound, and pronounced it to be dangerous. A large crowd gathered about in anticipation of adisturb- anee in consequence; but they were disappointed, as the members wended their way nomeward in a peaceable manner. On Saturday cvenins a fire broke out in the attic of Mr. John Jehl’s boarding house, No. 7 Linden row, near Fulton avenue, which resulted in damaging the premises to the extent of some $500 or $600—supposed to be in- sured.
