Tur Artantic anp Pactric Rarroap.—The «National Demoerat of this city, in attempting to imitate the extreme doctrine of the South Carolina hair-splitters of the constitution, labors hard to make out a case of unconstitutionality against the plan of the New York organization for the construction of a railroad to the Pacific ocean. Overhanling of the Navy in Congress—Mr. Cartter’s Kesolutions, If there is anything over which Congress has special jurisdiction, demanding a thorowgh over- hauling and re-organization, it is the United States navy. from kelson to sky-scraper, and from stem to stern, We hail, therefore. every movement looking to this great object with satisfaction. In this view, we cheerfully second the resolutions lately offered in the House of Representatives by Mr. Cartter, of Ohio. They are brief. and, having been adopted. we trust that the Sccretary of the Navy will see to it that the valuable information asked for will be communicated to the House, at least before the adjournment of Congress. The following are the resolutions :— Resolved, That the Secretary of the Navy communieate to this House the information ealled for by the following interrogatories :-— : 1. The number ani name of steamers built for the nary in eack year since Jenuary, 1835; their power, tonnage, ortion of quns to the tm as actually armed, and the jength of time between the commencemént of each yessel and her sailing on her first cruise. 2. The number of ties each steamer has undergone foreign repairs on foreign stations, from accident, and the and magnifitent enterprise. ginning. and then we shall have some guarantee of the prosecution of the work. Tux Honpuras Brrrish Cocony—Tur Cray- ron AND Berwerr Treaty.—The news which we published from our San Juan correspondent yesterday, of the formal establishment of a Bri- tish colony in what is sometimes known as Bri- tish Honduras, is well calculated to set the champions of the Monroe doctrine in Congress to hard thinking. We are the more inclined to give full credit to our correspondent from the fact that General Pierce is expeeted to play a totally different game upon our foreign rela- tions to that which has characterized the melancholy neutrality of President Fillmore, and that England may have considered it her safest policy to make a bold push while yet the door of our neutrality is open. Had she waited a month or two longer, Honduras might, per- haps, have been lost to her forever. This Bri tish Honduras, (so styled from the right to cut logwood, extended into a usurpation of the ter- ritory,) lies next to Yucatan, and in a military view, with the Bay of Honduras and the Bay Islands, (another new British colony) commands afternoon. It appears that a number of lads, of ages va- vying from ten ta fourteen years, were enjoying them, selves in skating upon a mill pond near the town, when several of them incautiously approzched a hole whieh had been cut inthe ice. Three of the number ran in, and were almost immediately drowned, althouzh the wa- ter in the pond was only about three or four feet deep. We were unable to learn the Christian names of the ys. Mheir sirnames were as follows — aged twelve years; only son of Mr. ‘ortick. ——Smith, aged eleven years, only son of Mr. Edgi nith. | — McLean, aged twelve years, second son of Captain Washington McLean. What renders the catastrophe, if possible, more dis- | tressing to their parents and relatives, is the fact that a number of men Were around the pond at the time, and no efiort was made to reseue the youths from their untimely end. The bodies were ve ed tu to the respective residences of their sorrowing parent ‘Tux Weatner.—the returning frost of Friday night did not continue long, and from early yesterday morning un- til a late hour of last night a mild thaw prevailed. “The day was exceedingly calm, and at times warm. The thermometer at the Heratp Building ranged :—At_9 o'clock, A. M., 893g ; at noon, 42°; at 3 P. M., 419 ; at 5P.M.,41©; und 10 o'clock, night, 413¢°. “At th latter hour the night was mild, with the sky slightly over- cest. ‘Tur Fort Warp Is A good deal of | excitement was caused y t a portion of the population of Butavia street, owing to the fact of | Coroner O'Donnell procecding to inyestigate the cir- cumstances connected with the supposed ease of infunti- | cide charged against Catherine Crowley, the reputed mother of the infant whose dead body was found con- aled in a trunk in her room, on Friday evening, as pub- hed inthe Heratp of yesterday morning. Catherine ee, No.6 in the same hospital. The body of jury almost immediately acquitted the prisoner, who was discharged, with a caution against such freaks, and left the court, his large frame considerably agitated by tears of repentanee for his folly and consequent sufferings. There being no other cases ready, the court adjourned. CONCLUSION OF THE TERM—THE TAMMANY HALL RIOT, AND THE MOCK AUCTION CAS! NTENCE ON PATRICK CREGAN—DISCUARGE OF THE GRAN JURY. Before Judge Beebe and Aldermen Brisley and Francis. JAN. 22—It being understood that sentence would be passed inthe above cases this morning, the court was densely crowded. ‘THE MOCK AUCTION CASES. Patrick Cregan, convicted of grand larceny, as previous- ly reported, was placed at the bur for sentence, when Hop. F. A. Tattmance, with whom was Mr. Wheaton, made a motion for suspension of judgment and stay of proceeedings, on the giound that the verdict was totally against evidence, the Court having charged that no such crime as that laid in the indictment had been committed, unless they believed a state of facts clearly not proven. If the proceedings were stayed, the District Attorney might move fora mandamus, calling’ upon them to sentence She prisoner, and thus the question would be properly aaised. Mr. Wheaton followed on the same side. It could not be thought that a Court was called upon to sentence a -oner for a crime which, in their own expressed oniniun. had never committed, however great his moral criminality or bie ae may have been. They would also bear in mind, the prisoner was indicted for the sume crime as a fi pretence, of whieh, peradventure, he might be guilty, and for which he was’ in peril of being tried. Judge Breve said, that on the oocasion of the trial the question distinetly left to the jury was, whether the pro- secutor had parted with his money in the expectation of getting the identical money back again; that if he had, it was a larceny; but if not, then such a charge was not took a clock from its fastenings. also a cabin lamp, and was about going off with them, when the boy, with a pistol in each hund, discharged one of them at the rob- bers.
