FEVANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Farpay, Jan. 21—6 P. M. 8 will be seen by the reported sales to-day, that the market has been particularly active. Prices were | pretty well sustained, and a good feeling existed threughont. At the first board Erie Railroad ad- vameed # per cent; Florence and Keyport, 1; New Jeveey, Zinc, j; Panama Railroad, 13; Rochester and Syracuse, J. Cumberland Coal Company declined a per éent; Long Island, 13; Hanem, 4; Hudson Rtver Railroad, 1}. At the second board the mar- ket was active, and prices qnite steady. The coal stocks are in such demand from outsigers that the tendeney generally is upward, and they do not ap- pear to feel those occasional depressions which other stocks are more or less subject to. The movement in Parker Vein, Phanix, New Creek, and the other ‘Westernport coal companies, is firm. These are the favorite con] companies of that region; and as the eeal of that district is known to be superior to all all others, in consequence of its freedom from slate, it follows that for permanent investment the stocks ef these companies must command better prices, The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company have eontracted to transport coal from Cumberland for $1 76 perton, and from Westernport for $1 94 per tan, "difference too trifling to make any material conse- quence in the aggregate. Sales of St. Lawrence Mining Company have recently been made to some extent at prices ranging from 3} to 3% per cent, Simee the election of a new board of trustees, gteat progress-has been made in placing the affairs of the company in proper shape. From investiga- tions made, it appears that the finances are in a much better position than anticipated. It is the intention ef the new trustees to proceed at once to the mines, and place mattersthere upon a proper basis. We have much faith in the new management, and have me doubt they will carry the St. Lawrence ulti- | mately up to a level with other good mining stocks. ‘There was a good demand to-day for foreign ex- ehange, for remittance by the Pacific tomorrow— Satorday—for Liverpool. The market closed firm, at eur quotations. Wequote bills on London at 9, a ‘$} percent premium; on Paris, 5f. 15 a 5f.133; Am_ sterdam, 41j a 413; Bremen, 79} a 80; Hamburg, 36j a 363. The steamer will not take out a large amount of specie. Arrangements have been made for shipping a moderate sum in American gold. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Trea- surer of this port to-day amounted to $85,185 42; payments, $134,812 28—balance, $2,138,619 45. ‘The steamship Europa, at Halifax, from Liverpool, brings seven days’ later news. The ,intelliges is not important. It is, however, in a commercial point of view, unfavorable to parties on this side of the Atlantic. Cotton and breadstuffs have declined, and the markets were without animation. Political advices possess no interest. In financial affairs there had been no change of consequence. The news, on the whole, does not amount to much. The Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company have declared a semi-annual dividend of five per eent; the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati Rail- read, five per cent. After the adjournment of the board, the following stecks were sold at auction, by Simeon Draper :— 91,000 California Sevens, redeemable in N. The foreign commerce of the port of Ogdensburg @uring the year 1852, as follows:—Imports in American and British vessels, paying duty, $123. waports in American and British vessels, free of duty, $8,571; imports in American and British ves- els, warehoused, $77,183; imports in American and British vessels, of specie, $47.540. Though it does not yet possess that activity which dealers anticipated in December, it shows a considerable increase over the transactions which occurred in the early part of 18 This is owing to the more general demand which now emanates from every quarter of the country, and which has been produced by our unparalleled prosperity during the bygone year. The influx of gold has, doubtless, contributed to our success, by enabling consumers to buy more of, and pay higher prices for, such pro- duets as not only their absolute necessities require, but as their luxurious appetites covet. which has given such an impetus to agriculture, eroboldening our farmers to enlarge the scope of | tile, and rewarding their labors with a profusion so great that they now can provide themselves with | finer and richer garments, while they are not indit- ferent about the future. And from both the abun- | dance of the precious metal, and the good fortune which attended our husbandmen, manufacturing derives its vigor and profitableness. Bnyers trom distant markets are here in large numbers; and as they have thus far sparingly purchased, and as dealers from the neighboring cities display more wil- lingness to operate, we may confidently ex; thorough revival of animation within a very brief eriod. The two large auction sales of Lodi and Portsmouth lawns, which are to come off to-day or to-morrow, have restricted operations during the past week; but subsequent to their occurrence, we shall have an unimpeded and a vastly augmented stream of business. Brown sheetings and shirtings are more sought after by shippers aad local deal- ers, at full prices. The recent large opera- tions in bleached goods have so far reduced the stock that holders are incapable of sapplying the demand immediately. ence these fabrics are quiet, but very firm. The cessation of activity in ginghams, occasioned by the late ap pre ciation, has rendered holders somewhat diffident and they are now more willing to sell Lancasters, at 11c., aud Manchesters, at 10}c. Jeans are retailing at full figures. Osnaburgs are still rare, and tirmly held. | They remain quiet. This is a statement we feel the great: pride in making, and only yegret thatall our American manufactures do not merit the same commendations. We hope, however, that the influence of un untram- meled intercourse and competition betweenour own and other nations, and the progressive spead, and cultivation of trade among both prodacers and con- sumers, will do much to remedy our defects in mana- fi ring. Though the production of printing eloths is still arople, the ples ot traders are so nu- merous and urgent that our stock is kept down and the firmness and buoyancy in prices are preserved. | Prints are in fair demand, and steady.
