The Committee on Streets, to whom this matter was | referred, reported concurring with the Board of Alder- | men in the grant to Mesers. Murphy, Radford, and | Storey. of permission to lay rails in Greenwich street, Washington street, Ninth avenue, &o. Alderman Berce opposed the adoption of the report, en the ground that the lewer part of Greeswich street was always necessarily filled with wagons amd business carts, and no railroad cars could possibly travel there; gons ard carts, there was very little passenger travel, and there was no railroad required. All that wanted to g° that way could be competently accommodated by the ixth and Eighth avenue railroads. He considered this was upnecescary, and should for his own part vote against it Alderman Sturtevant intended Lies in favor of the report He certainly agreed with the gentleman from the Fifth, and regretted thoy dil not stop the road romewhat short of the imtended ter | mimus, for, as he observed, there might be seme in- | comvenience in tho lower part of the city, But | He wes contenatet to lay one track only there, and if road would have the effect of removing certain | permanent obetructions there which exist in violation of | all law end ordinancer, he would cheerfully vote for it; but he feared that it would have no such effect. He had constantly endesvored, in vain. to effect this He was one of thoee who regarded railreads as improvement of the mort important cbaracter, and if laid withim the city | | with proper grooves. as the greatest conveniences. Alderman Boycr wished bim to explain @ little more about the ~-certain obstructions’ he bad spoken of. The gentleman of the Fifth would vote against it because, he said, the par- | ties were opposed to it. He (Alderman Ward) had bern on that Committee, and he never saw so many petitions applying for s raiload. Some of the largest of the land- owners on the line, even down town, were in favor of it. Alderman Denman had steadily advocated railroad grants, and in this case they proposed that the cars | should cach carry as many as three omnibuses, and if they got rid of two-thirds of the omnibuses out of the streets, he thought they would do the city a very great Alderman Prcx was strenuously opposed to it; they | were going to throw another road into the hauds of capi- | talists.
