By the arrival, last night, of the steamship Unele Bam, we have dates from California to the Ist inat., Being twelve days later than previonsly received. ‘Phe news by this arrival is not very important, save the announcement of the immense amount of gold Grew was, that future heroes were new suffering martyrdom at the hands of the present gencration, and were denounced as fanatics and innovators ; and that we eught, therefore, to be cautious in the jadgment we form of the men of the time, and to divest ourselves of all our prejudices when in the pursuit of truth. From the weck!y report of the City Inspsctor it appears that the number of deaths has exeecded the very people for whom our American filMbusteros express such sympathy. Therefore, let the prime effort of General Picrce’s home administration be to eradicate, once and forever, the spirit of fillibuster- ism which has of Jate becn such a bugbear to the Spanish government and such s text for the pious homilies of the London Times. Cotemporaneously with this extinction of the in- vading element in the public mind of this country, candidates who stand in the way of their friends as totally incapacitated for office, if not actual ene- mies of the country. Amidst these conflicting opinions and proferences and prejudices, Gencral Pierce has a very hard task to perform. It is quite clear that he cannot take into his cabinet all who are offered te him. But our negligent and in- efficient government allowed the encroachments en Honduras to pass without notice, and the koys of the Gulf of Mexico on the Bouth to fall into the hands of Grest Britain. We are only surprised that, although tho govern- infection. This is o matter et much consequence to our social eondition during the next four years, Having sueceeded in extirpating, or, at all events, reducing to an innocuous state, fillibusterism, free- soilism and abolitionism, the domestic policy of General Pieree would then be comparatively simple andeasy. Ho may then establish a united party, based on trae Union and annexation principlos—a party under which this great republic would prosper and progress, even beyond all former precedent—a party whieh would give s fresh impetus to the Anglo- American race in its noble onroer of spreading light and liberty and happiness over the whole surface of the Amorican continent. Havo we ne reminiscences of the American flog wantonly insulted in the Caribbean sea, of private rights violated, and of Amerioan citizens illtreated and sbused in the port of Havana? Jeet the men who ore to assist him in carrying out his ideas. He isthe sole jadge; and no map, or body tho courage to act independently of all cliques, sco- tions, factions, and individuals. It is his only safe- ty. There are two points which wo feel confident he will keep in view. Qne is, that his cabinet ought to be a strong one; and to be so it must consist of men of intellect and integrity—mon who will seek the honor and glory of the mation, rather than their own interest, and who possess talents of the order required for the posts they are destined to fill. The othor point is, that they must be men of sound opinions—men who will think and act in harmony with cach other, and with the Prosident—the key- stone of the arch. General Pierce mus’, therofore, look for the materials of his cabinet among those men who believe in the platform upon which ho was elected, and who will most sealously and thoroughly ces out its great principles. By follow- ing this course, he will only be obeying the will of the nation, while the nation leaves to himself the choice of the particular individuals who may be most capable, and in every way bost fi:ted, for the departments over whieh they shall be called to preside.
