Some five years 289, a large emigrating company, from Neuvoo and adjacent country, arrived here om their way to the West, having on their route ostab~ lished and left @ considerable colony at (arden. Grove, snd another at Pisgah. Arrived too lute to proceed across the plains, a lurge portion of the company crossed the Missouri river to the Iadiam country, and buile a temporary place of soms five hundred houses, where they remained over winter. In the spring a part of this mass of emigrants went on their way westward, the remainder settling aud, opening farms in this vicinity. Vrom that time the Conneil Bluff country bas become notorious for the richaoss and fertility of its coil, for the beauty and. sublimity of its seenery, for its facilities for settle- ment, smerchandising, stock growing, snd last, though not least, for ita great Joval position at the mguth of the Platte, making it the great last out- fitting depot on the Oregon, Califoruia, and Utaly thoroughiares. Four years ago, one or two stores were estab- lishod oa the ste where Kanesville now stands, hb was then termed ** Miller's Holl the fact that Mr. H. W. The report of the'e emigraats to their frionds bebind, bronght vest meututudes of emigrants throngh this place in 13%), ¢ beyonda doubt the advantages of this route con~ timing the north ride of tho Platte, in regard to heatth, and good satura! locations tor roads, and the superior fucilities for outfitting here. In~ stead of the one or two cubin stores; there are now near, or quite, twenty morosnsi uses, and & number doing wholovale busine th heavy cae yitals; and instead. of the little claster of eabing that were here in L319. & respoctab 1,000 inbabitaats, stretcbiog iis wor neighboring dales and over tae Pour reguiar farcies are in con this pl ong at ‘Pred below, one at ** Winter Qaw with two others in the r Kanesville is situated ia the mou hollow or valley, through which meand cool streams, culled Indian creck, which P various gushing springs from hil) though high and lofty, are still # covered with Juxurians und hy Bors, grass, or good timt Directly wes: from Manesville, tro miles, t great, far-tamed Mi t i of all rivers, the longest, the stron most interesting aud most diilieult of navig ction, Lows ia silent mu towards fitde lower down, fertile bottoms expand in width to three, four, aud five miles. Back from these valuable bottoms a tew miles, the country is v d with high blutis, rich valleys aud rolling prairies. Mosquito creek, some two miles oaa@ot Kanceville, is a atremaa sufticiently large for mills and aa endless amount of machinery aud water power. Still farther cast, and South Poney creek and Keg creek pass south- wesb and empty into the Misccuri. On the latter stream, several mills for suwing and grinding have been erected. A fow wiles north, a clear, swift streain of considerable cize meanders through e rich valley—etill farther north, Honey creek winds itg way :and still further, about twelve miles froin town, the Boyer river empties intothe Missouri. Ailthese aah are large enough for machinery parposes oy mills. ‘Tho facilities for opening farms, and tho siehness cight miles fox above, listanee te larga Sa clear, s tante up & ound of soil, cannot be surpassed, and no country is bet- j ter adapted to grazing and stock yrowiag. Al) kinds of grain produced in the Northern, Middle, and Western States are produced in luxuriant abundance here. Seventy-five or one bandred bushels of corn per acre isno uncommon crop. Fivo p idow ago there were no settlements in Western lowa betweon the Des Moines river azd Council Biutls. Now, the distanso of 150 miles from river to river, and from the Missouri line north, 100 mile# or more, the vountry is dotted with towns and set~ tlements. North from this place, thirty, forty, or fifty miles, a plenty of elk, deer. turkeys, and wild honey may be obtained. Large herds of young stock are being accumulated by some of our enter- rising farmers, and wo are informed that Messrs artin & Powers have already 1,000 head of ealvor and yearlings. Emigrants from the Ea:t, who come this way to California and Oregon, will probably find it a bet- ter route up on the Des Moines river to Fort Des Moines; they will thon have a high, beautitol road one hundred and fifty miles through india Town to this place.
