Nica- Fagus, Brie, and Reading take the lead, and are Likely to Boldit For the past two days Cumberland Coal stock fhas been quiet, The books have been closed since yeeter- ‘Gay, and will remain eo until the 27th inst. Jn the mean- dime the old stockholders will have the privilege of sub- yeribing tothe mew stock. There is no doubt but that dhe new issue will all be taken at the price fixed by the Company. Nicaragua Transit is destined to touch much higher prices. Parties who, a few weeks since, were lange Bellers. are now on the other side, and have been heavy purchasers. There may be reactions and fluctuations, for It is the object of buyers not to run prices up too rapidly. Where ail ate purchasers the advance is likely to be most Yapid By withdrawing from the market for a time, the sup- ply of stock may accumulate. and prices droop a little, when purchasers can take in large lots without creating much xcitement. A great deal of care is necessary in getting A} corner. Stonington has been quite active Iately, ndprices have improved several per cent. Harlem ha’ xccpin demand. but the market value remains without py material alteration, Itis one of the moat difficult bocks on the list to move. The bears in Long Island vregetting themselves still deeper in the mire; but prices Tule now ro bigh that those who do not sell this stock will doubtless make a great mistake. Long Island, at anything like present prices, is by mo means cheap, A smaii lot of St. Lawrence Mining Co. was sold to-day ‘at two per cent, This stock is yorth more than double that price The weekly reports from the mines are most Ratisfuctory, amd as soon as the machinery recently pur- Dhacet is im active operation, the company will smelt gull five tons of pig lead daily. Within the next ninety days this mine will, without doubt, show results (hat will gstonish the stockholders. Most of the mining stocks ow in the market present favorable pro:pects. V few sbares are offered atthe board, They are well held, pnd will not press for rale. fe The three days later European news, received by the Bética, chow that there had been no change worthy of re- poark in any of themarkets. We \carn that the surveys of the Louisville and Nash- wille Railroad are completed. The cost of the road, com- plete and in running order, with equipments, depots, ‘&ec_, is estimated at $5,000,000. Of this amount the city of Louisville bas subscribed $1,000,000, and large ‘amounts have been also subscribed by coumties on the line, end by individuals. Tennessee will be called upon 4o subscribe another million, which is said to be all that is now wanted to carry the work through. Even in the Southern States, where the grain crops have been almost a total failure for two years in succession, the harvest is ample, and lanza sections ofcountry which have depended upon the West for supplies, are likely to have @ surplus to send to market. The crops of Europe, also, are generally represented as giving favorable promize, and the proba- bilities would seem to indicate a lower range of prices than the American farmer has realized tor some years past. Dear Sir—As a practical miller, for more than twenty years, in first class merchant mills, 1 have found the great | obstacle (in common with all good millers) to kee} er grinding qualities of the meal chargeable to t ei Hability of the fost of the spindle, which fs enusod by the springing and radii of tho ordinary bridge. Since the ado jon of the Hotchkiss Trams and Counter bridge in Charles Wilson's mill, in which Tam a head milter, I tind it exactly ight. It perfectly prevents» sidewise oscillation, rnd se cures a non-elastic fixed relative distance of the grinding surface of the stone, which not only greatly facilitates the rinding capacity of ‘the mill, but makes the flour more uni form. Iam sure no mill owner would fail to adopt them, for double the cost, when the advantages are known. Tn sddi- tion to the above, if for no other consideration, durability of the goar, derived by the use of thi would warrant their adoption.
