I haveseen a miner direct from there. and he informed ms that thoee diggings are extensive. He exhibited some o: the gold, and it looked bright and beautiful. He has ne beck to these mines, Miners there are averaging ten to sixteen dollars. ‘There is a great excitement in Mount Shasta City and on Humbug Creek, conrequent on the discovery of these new and rich diggings. 1saw about two hunared leave for Rogue river valley on last Sabbath. Parties are leaving town daily. Mules are selling from $100 to $140 each. Rogue river valley is about all taken up by per- sons who intend te settle permanently. The from the quartz mills are not favorable. It seems to be an established fact that some improvement must be made in the quartz machinery, before the rock will pay snything near what it tests. We have been informed by several gentlemen who came infrom French Gulch, that very rich deposits of gold have been discovered on Dead Wood Creek. This creek is about twenty-five miles from this place. It heads on the west side of the Trinity Mountains and its waters flow into the Tri river. The creek is described as runring through a Valley the whole of which is repre- sented as being exceedingly rich with gold. Those who have prospected Dead Wood Creek state that the average yield is about two dollars tothe pan full of earth. A | jarge number of miners have already deserted their claims on French Gulch and gone to the newly dis- covered placers.—Shaste Couricr. Miners on Webers Creek are doing better than ever. New diggings are discovered almost every day. and from eight to sixteen dollars is the average yield to the man diem. S Pie Canon, one of the oldest placers, is also turning out rich, ¢ vethe Nevada Journal says that quartz miners are in much better spirits than three moths ago. Sweeney, with his command, arrived at Vallecito on the 16th, The only accident they met with, was the maiming of one of the men by a wagon wheel ning over his foot. ‘The man will remain with Lieutenant Murray, at Vailecito. (Correspondence of the Times and Transcript ] Another battle was fought on the Klamath river be- tween the miners aud Indians,on the morning of the 12th of April, Yesterday I was informed by a miner of my acquaint- ance, just up from Klamath, that an Indian ranchoria located in Scind valley, fifteen miles below the mouth of Scott river, was stormed, and forty Indians kliled, and their houres burned to the ground. The Klsmath Indians, fora distance of forty miles be- low the mouth of Scott river, have been for a long time very hostile nnd trouble: ome to the miners and packers, At Happy Camp. which is situated twenty miles below Seind Valicy, the ainors passed a law amonget themselves, that no Indians sLould be allowed to come to this place; if they did they were to be shot instantly, When the Indian Agent, McKeo. passed up this river and formed a treaty with these Indians. the miners informed him of the law which they had made for their protection against Indian depredations Mr. McKee communicated this to the Indians, Last January an Indian from Seiad Valley said he was not afraid to go down to Happy Camp, and.down he started, and no sooner had he ar- rived there, than he was shot dead whilst crossing the near tho camp, Last week the Indians made pre- ? ‘The squawa started for Seott Valley. and the Indians sent word down to the Hap- Py Camp miners that they wero going to kill throe of their men, for the one they had killed. ‘The Happy Camp misiers, on hearing this, case up to Long Bar, within four, miles of the Indian reach, Here they were joined by another party, and marclsd up'in the night. and a early dawn surrounded the Timdian rancheria, A nim bee of the Indians stopped out of their houses ant were ehot They set fire to the ranch and smothered on Indians, When an Indian would break from the ranch, they would shoot him down. In this way they shot forty Indians, and not one escaped from tho rancheria, One of there Indians had eight balls shot through his body before he fell to the ground. Aimongst all of the dead there was only one squaw found. and she was the Indian chief's denghter, During the battle two white men were shot with ar- | rows ; one of them was shot in the thigh and the other | in the breast ; the arrow pussed betwoen two of his ribs. | Their wounds'are not considered mortal. The men are now improving, and ina short time will be able to re- sume their labor What this will ond in, time will de- termine. The Scott river valley reservation is of no effect with the Indians, Klamath Indians say. that it was not them who wanted to make a treaty of peace ; it was the white men. Iam rather suspicious that this will lead to fur- ther Indian hostilities and depredations. ‘The Indians had better be poaceable, for if they com- mit any moro hostilities, the Happy Camp miners say they will kill every Indian on the Klamath river. Kile math river miners are not to be trifled with. If the In- diaus insult them with impunity. they will not stand a moment for Mr. McKee's treaty of peace, nor Scott Val- ley Indian reservation. ‘The Yucas Indians recently attacked three men, who were proapecting on the South Fork of Cottonwoed creek. The Indiana came upon them suddenly. in the night time, and before any effectual defence could be made, two of the party were severely wounded with arrows. Al- though the Indians numbered about fifteen, thoy were speedily driven off without being able to take with them any animals belenging to the camp. The recovery of Mr. Tuttle and a man generally called Tennessee is considered doubtful. The El Dorado News says:—The Indians continue to | be very troublesome. and are growing bolder and bolder | every day. About the 27th ult. large party of them | made an attack on Reese's corral. but did not succeed in | carrying away any stock. They fired several guns at the whites. but fortunately no one was injured. An Indian who was taken prisoner, attempted to escape, and was Killed. It is rumored that despatches were brought by the Sea Bird for General Hitchcock, commander of this division, stating that a number of mules, belonging to the Quarter Master's Department, had been stolen in the lower coun- try. by the Indians, "There will soon be a sufficient force at the mouth of the Gila to keep the Indians in check; and we understand that a post will be pushed up to the Pimo villages, and thus there will bea chain of posts, though at long intervals, from the Rio Grande. at Do- nana, across to San Diego. onthe Pacific. ‘The latest ac- counts from New Mexico stated that there was a det ment of dragoons stationed in the copper mines, near the head of the Gila.—San Francisco Herald, May 14.
