ARRIVAL OF THE PACIFIC. Slight Improvement in Cotton and Corn. seas CUBAN SLAVE TRADE. YF AMERICANS In BOM RREST The Extensive Emigration { from Eurepe, ko., &o., &o. The steamship Pacific, Captain Nye, arrived at this port yesterday ufternoon, in eleven days and four hours, from Liverpool. She left that port at half-past 12 o'clock om Wednesday afternoon, the 21st ult. Her news, which is four days later, is of no importance Cotton and corn had slightly improved. Almost the only subject that engaged public attention im Paris, was the forthcoming grand review on the 10th of May, when the general impression was that on that day the empire would be proclaimed. Prince Paul, of Wurtemberg. died in Paris, on the 15th ult. Just as he breathed his last, the Papal Nuncio inti- | mated that the Prince had. fortnight previously, abjured the Protestant fuith and becomes Roman Catholic. The greatest surprise was manifested by the frionds and rela- tions of the Prince at the announcement. and much dis- satisfaction expreased at the secrecy which has been main- tained upon the subject. Some explanation have passed between the French Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Russian Minister, on ae apbject of an almanac published at Warsaw, for the Spreeent year, and in which it is set down that the reign- jag fumily in France is the younger branch of the Bour- ‘bons. Assurances had been given that there was no- thing of an offensive Kind meant to France or its Prosi-g dens. Marshal Gerard died, on Saturday, at Paris, 79th year of his age. ‘The new constitution for the Electorate of Hesse has just been published. It ix promulgated on the authority of the Dict of Frankfort, and has been drawn up in ac- cordance with the fundamental statutes of the Bund. Advices from Madrid state that a very general beliof existed in political circles, that the Electoral law and the constitution would very shortly be modified. ‘The Spanish government intend to organize a small equadron of evolution in the Mediterranean, for the in- struction of Spanish seamen. ‘Tho Madrid Espara rays that the government have ac- ceded to the request of Brigadier Pavia, that a court of inquiry should be held to investigate the facts on which General J. Concha, in accord with other authorities of Cuba, had founded his dismissal from the government of Matanzas, It will be recollected that this officer was dis- missed for dabbling in the slave trado. ‘Those of the American prisonerg concerned in the Cuban invasion who were at Coute, hi¥ing been pardoned by the Queen of Spain, were daily expected at Gibraltar, on the 12th ult., where they were to embark for the United States. Some Americans had been arrested in Rome, about the oth ult. Mr. Cass, the American Obarge d’Affaires, had taken the matter up. One of the persons [probably Parke Godwin, socialist, of Now York] arrested was a cused of publicly addressing the inhabitants and abus- ing the Papal government. Theso matters would, howerer, it was presumed. easily be adjusted, as the Papel authoritics were on good terms both with the ited States government aud their repressatative re- sident in the Eternal City. The accounts continue to pour in of extensive emi- tion from all parta of Europe to America and Aus- lin, Emigration from Germany appears to be very much on the increase. On the 15th ult., no less than 5,000 persons sailed from Bremen, ‘The correspondent of the Oest Dextsche Post writes from Constantinople. dated March 31, that tho other powers. particularly England and Russia, do not look with indifference en the bebavior of France in the Jeru- salem question, The London Globe. of the 2th ult.. states that it was reported in the clubs that the Chancellor of the Exche- quer intended to take off the income tax. A letter from Cairo, of the 3d ult., states the mis- sionof Fuad Effendi from the Porte had created most serious alarm in Egypt. Nine of the gates of Cairo were closed, and rentinels doubled at the remaining ones, Abbas Pacha had ordered his treasures to be removed to the Paluce of Abbusic, The gurrison at Alexandria was being strengthened, The English fleet was at Mayon. The new line of monthly steamers from Plymouth, England, for Madeira and the African coast, are an- nounced to commence runuing the Ist September. ‘The iron screw steainship Tamauliy of 500 tons bur- then, the first of a new line, will matched from Liver- pool cn the 4th of June, for St, Thomas, Kingston, (Jn- amuica.) and Tempier The Mon, John Bligh was expected at the English legation in Lerlin, to replace Mr. Mauley, appointed paid attaché at Washington The Liverpool Courier of the 21st ult. Tho long prevalence of easterly winds has been the means of keeping & larze fleet of ships outside the port. Hundreds of vessole are now due, but cannot arrive withont a change of the wind, We have Leen told that there are 300,000 bales of cotton on the water, owing tothis canse,, A change in the wind will present 0 the most extraordinary sights over shi such a in the ya — for England, and there he will embark, with Lis family, for the United. IGRATION FROM GERMANY. A Berlin letter of the 1ith ult. says:— At the last sitting of the Contral German Emigration Society, the increase ofthe number of emigrants in the pre- went year wns noticed. Though the muin cause of this increase is to be sought in the social and political condi- tion of some parts of Germany. Marshal Gerard died in Paris on the 17th ult. He had been for eighteen hours preceding his death ina state of unconciousness ; but the mois of his family remained by Wy his bed until he breathed his last.
