There is nothing new in the money or stook market. Se far as operations in Wall street are concerned, the brokers have them all to themselves. A week or two since there were indications of activity among the fancies and an upward movemens in prices; bu tafver afew days they all disappeared, avd ihe market bas boon gradually set- tling down to the old etarting point. It appears almost Smpoesidle to get up an excitement among outside epecn- Jators. Boney is cheap enough, and easily obtained, Prices for many stocks are pretty well reduced, and there ipa fair margin for an advance. Notwithstanding all this, the fancies are neglected, aud holders in the street are compelied to operate among themselves. The weather, undoubtedly, bas an unfavorable effect upon the feelings of speculators, and deters them from teking hold of any- thing that requires artificial means to inflate. Fancy stocks are particularly dependent upon such means, and the season has a great deal to do with the state ot the market. Several of the leading railroad stocks are in good hands for a rise when the proper time arrives. The deep snows and severely cold weathor will doubtless make rome difference in their receipts, and the effect may be bad; but this, after all, bas really little in- fluence upen prices. If the wires are not properly pulled in Weil street—if the longs and the shorts pre not properly divided, or rather if there are not ehorts enovgh to create an active demand for delivery—it is utterly cut of the quesvion to produce any expansion of importance in the market. Fancy stocks have been quiet so long, thet most of the operators are long—that ia, they are holders. ‘They ave all sellers, and no buyers #o long as thie state of things exists, pices will no: The only way to remove this difliculy is to get up combinations for corucrs, There cliques are very serviceable in inflating the market value of ay stock, but they generally get the worst of it, for thoy are urually caught with large lots of atock on hi high Prices, when the bubble barots, We see no indicat at presect of the formation of any of these necassary combinations, Zhe brokers are getting afraid of them They have sll beem heavy losers in cornericg faney stocks The Bonkers’ Migezine for January gives the annexed statement, showing the number of banks in the United States, the circulation, eapital, and coin, compiled from returns nearest the Ist of January, 1862 :— Banks ov ran, Usiren States, N Circulatio: Coin $530,000 440,000 189.00) 7,000 000 750,00" 6 2),000 2500 8,009.000 11, 600,000 4.6.0 000, 09. In January, 1844, according _ to official returns, the banks throughout the country had on hand $49,898,269 in specie—a larger amount than at any previous period in their history. In 1837 the circulation of all the banks amounted to $149,185.890. anexpansion greater than et any previous period, or since, excep on the tirst of January, 1852. In Illinois, Florida, Arkansas, and California, there were no banks organized when this table was compiled. In [ilinois, a general banking law kas been adopted by the people; but there has been some hesitation on the part of the auditor ef the State about putting it into effect. The latest account, however, is, that he has de- cided togive notice of his readiness to receive the depo- sites authcrixed by the law, and to deliver circulating notes. One bank—the Merchants’ and,Mechanios’—has been organized at Chicago, with a capital of one hundred thousand dollars, and another will shortly be organized at Springfield, the State capital, In Florida, the Legis- lature, at its last seesion, incorporated a bank at Talla- hacsee, but we believe that it has not been organized a: yet. ‘The aggregate of the lesding departments, compiled from the returns of the banks of Rhode Island, made in accordance with a special act of the Legislatnre, of their condition at the clore of the year 1951, was as annexed :— Banxs or Ruove Isranp—1861 26 Providence Banks. 43 Country Banks.
