M. There was a slight improvement in quotations for stocks to-day. The market was not active. exhibited no anxiety to sell, and were firmat current rates. At the first board, Erie Railroad advanced 11; percent; New Jersey Zinc Company '{; Harlem ‘\; Norwich and Worcester }{; Reading Railroad 34; Sussex Mining Company 3; Hudson River Railroad }{. There were larger sales of Hudson River Railroad stock than we have noticed for a long time, but prices were not sus- tained. They closed ata decline of three.quarters per cent on those ruling at the opening, but at an advance on Saturday’s prices. None of the prices were acti t the first board. At the second, the market was more buoyant, and the advance of the morning fully sur- tained. Harlem Railroad went up \< per cent, Read. ing Railroad ';, Canton Company };, Sussex Company 3, N.J. Zinc 34, with sales of several hundred shares. The last two named stocks will be consolidated in a few days, when they wilt be quoted as one. The most important and favorable feature in the stock market, at this mo- ment, is the fact that notwithstanding the improvement in prices, very little etock is offered for sale, There are in the street, more purchasers for certain securities than sellers. This has not been the case for some time past, and it is, doubtless, most encouraging to thoee who have carried, for several months, large lotsof unproductive stocks. There are decided indications of a better state of things in Wall street. We do not look for much, if any, improvement in several leading railroad securities, as they are already too much inflated; but there is a class of stocks which have, for along time, been unwarranta- bly depressed, in which there is, in reality, a wide margin for improvement in the market value before it exceeds their intrinsic value. Any speculative movement would be most likely to reach the securities referred to first. Among the railroad stocks which have, for many months, been considerably depressed, the Harlem occupies a very prominent position. The regular semi-aanual dividend on the old stock will be paid on the Ist of February. It will probably be two anda half percent. The net carn- ings would justify alarger per cent; but the expenditures for improvements, extensions and repairs, have been 69 large that the direction deems it prudent and proper to keep the dividend down to a point lower than would be right under other circumstances, The Harlem road will probably be opened to Chatham this week. The rails are all laid. The market value of Hudson River Railroad stock hae, no doubt, been depressed by the recent disaster on the line, This company have, since the close of river navigation, been doing a very large business. It is estimated that the income during the winter will average one hundred and twenty-five taousand dollars per month. Some changes have lately been made in the mansgement of this road. William C. Young has re- signed as President and Chief Engineer. Hon. E. D. Morgan was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy—to enter on the active discharge of his duties on the ad- journment of the Legislature, until which time Mr. Jones, the Vice-President, will discharge the duties of the Office of President. Hugh McClellan, of Hudson, re- signed as a director of the company, and Joseph Tucker- man was elected in his place. The Erie Railroad Company have given notice that sealed prop¢sals will be received for the sale of a new igsue of three millions of convertible bonds, upon the following terms and conditions, viz:—20 per cent on the day of sale; 15 do. on the second of February; 15 do. on the first of March; 15 do, on the first of April; 15 do. on the first of May; 10 do. on the first of June; 10 do. on the first of July. The Treasurer's receipt will be given for the first payment of twenty per cent---the purchaser to have the option to pay the whole amount in cash, for which interest will be allowed up to the time the several instalmeggs become due. The acceptances of the company falling due before the first day of July next will be received (less the interest) in payment of all the instalments, after the first. The whole issue of these bonds amounts to three millions five hundred thousand dollars, payable in ten years from the first day of Ja- nuary, 1852, with interest, at seven per cent per annum, payable semi-annually, by coupons attached, on the first days of January and July, and are convertible into the capital stock of the company, at par, at the pleasure o the holder. These bonds are issued for the payment o the floating debt of the company. ee ” [ lorris Canal... 1334 Erie Pop Con.
