Helders are anxiously looking for the Baltic, for more favorable news, with the hope that a reaction in prices may be realized. The Baltic is now nearly due, with four days’ later news. She will, without doubt, bring something important, and business of all kinds ‘will be partially suspended until something more defl- nite relative to the result of the coup d’ etot is known. At the first board to-day, there was @ grand rush to get rid of stocks fret. There were any number of sellers and very few buyers, except among the shorts for Gelivery. Erie Railrcad declined 2 per cent; Reading» 134; Harlem, 144; Long Irland, %; Canton Compiny’ 434; Norwich and Worcester, 1)4; Morris Canal, \° There were large sales of al] the fancies, and at the close prices were weak snd tending downward. There is great distrust in the public mind, and we should not be sur. prised if, even in the absence of more unfavorable news by the saltio, the market stead'ly settled down, and priees touch lower points than have been realised for many weeks, All conddence in the future ts gone No one feels diepored to touck anything for purposes of epe- culation. Every one appears determined to keep clear of all responsibilities and obligations, until political a! faire wear a brighter sepect. It is beet to be prepared for emergencies. The affaire of Europe are ine very un- rettled condition, end we know not when a steamer may bring news that would put prices for stocks, for cotton, for real ertate, land lots--in fact, for every species of property--down ten to twen'y per cent. In times like these, the safe way is, of course, the best, and that is perfect quiet—inactivity. Atthe second bosrd the transactions were limited, without any improvement in prices. The bears have, no doubt, availed themselves of the temporary panic to take in their shorts and secure the profits accrued. Bbould the banks become alarmed at the complexion of politics in Europe, and call in their stock loans, there would be such a depreciation in the leading fancies as has not been known for years, ‘The receipts at the effice of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $21,030; payments, $75.914 14—balance, $2,600,495 09. We referred, # few days ago, to the fact that Grinnell, Minturn & Co.. of this city, and # highly respectable firm of Borton, had made arrangements to supply any de- mand {or emall amounts of eterling exchange, which may arize, frem five ¢hillings upwards, This arrangemest will be of great advantage to great number of our adopt- ¢d citizens, as well as stranger: scjourn among us, de- sirous of making @ safe remittance to their friends in Burope. We hope the parties embarked in this enter- price may be as successful in making foreign exchanges work with ss great facility as the highly responsible banking house of Clarks, Dodge & Co. have been, withia ‘a few years, in making cur inland exchanges work from Boston to &t. Louis, and affording a secure and cheap medium of exchange throughout the entire country. The Bceton Tube Company will carry on the business bitherte conducted by Walworth & Nason, in the name of the company. This fact improves the value of Edge- worth again, as it bad been feared that the works might be abandoned cn account of the failure of the agents, W.&N. The earnings of the Berton and Maine Railroad for the fiscal year, ending November 29, 1851, were as follows : Bosrow ano Maine RAILRoan, Earnings. The pro Dability of @ bill passing both Houses of Congress, mak- ing the warrants issued and to be issued under the act of Beptember, 1850, assignable, the same as those issued under previous sects, is the cause. In the event of thir, there will be greater aniformity im prices, without, per- bape, any depreciation of consequence im the value of the old issues. ‘The report of the Treasurer of the State ef Alabama, recently made to the Legislature of that State, gives the annexed general st-*ement of the condition of the Trea- ery — Rca ee oy Avstama—Receirre axp Dispunsements. The State Bank and branches of Alabama are the exclusive property of the State, founded cn capital raised by the eale of her bonds, and managed by cfficere and directors elected by the Legislature. For years the Etate expenses were all paid out of the means of the bank, under the delurive ides that there were pro fite, When the system was sbolirhed, and the banks ordered to be wound up, there assets were all the State bed to show for s large amount of bonded debt, and for the means of 1g the imterest there: A Btate tax wae laid to aid in these liquidations, and after five years this report ef Mr. Lyom shows how much has been done to reduce the debt by « rigid application of the bank furde. When the banks were put into Mr. Lyon's bands the amount of the debt which the State owed for their capital was $9.170,155 56, bearing an annual inte- rest of $400,657 80. The amount now outstanding is $4,407,006 77, and he has on band United States six per cents which reduce the sum to $5.9 616 77, atan annual interest of $266,963 35. In the investment and applica tion of the funds necessary to meet the interest from time to time, and im the purchase and eale of stocks aad United States certificates for funds eu band, Mr, Lyon reports that be hae made a cash prefit for the State of P0bd O44 8 ‘The acrets of the banks foreign debt are getting low. It is the intention of the managers to take one foot in depth from the bottom of the canal, and plece it on the top of the bauks, thereby increasing the present depth to about nine feet, or eight and « half of water, when full, Bat a greater work than this is in contemplation, and we hope, before long, it may be accomplished.
