The Jirpesition to operate one way or the other becomes less every day, and itis our impression that those who ma- conge to get rid of their stooks first, will prove the most forty Tn the event of balfa dozen large holders soming upon the market at once, anxious to get nd of their atook, there would be a great depremiation in prices. and a pertect stampede among the small operators. This ll are «tienuous to avoid; and it would prove ruinous to inee of spect who have purchased for a rire for ‘ancles to fall even two or three per cent. The large nd steady shipmente of specie must alarm the banks heemount on hand in the veuite of the banks of thiseity Joes not exceed seven and a balf millions of dollars, and ey depend apon aa immediate arrival from Oalifornia | » keep their pre: supply good. At the firet board Reading Railroad, 34; Harlem and Norwich clesed at prices current im the morning. Quotations for Brie Baihoad look as though the rate had commenced leav- ing the sinking ship. It is our belief that some of the clique will be left im the lurch. This, however, is no more than they deserve, after all the advice we have given them. Had we been weary of well doing, in this instance, we should have left tne public im the hands of epeculators, to be fleeced to their hearts’ content; but we have persevered steadily im the good course, and flatter ourselves that many have been deterred from touching the stock at anything like current quotations. In publishing » statement of the number of stook- | holders of the New York and Erie Rail Road Company holding “twenty-five shares and under,” we hold that such representation was a breach of trust, because mede by the sub-officers of the company, and in direct contra- venticn of their prescribed duties ; and we contend that nothing can be more disgraceful than the culpable prac- tice, which some small accountant tyros pursue, of taking surreptitiously such copies of the minutes of the proceedings as may be turned to malicious purposes. The statement, in the present instance, proved more than was intended ; and instead of showing that there wasa large portion of the capital withheld from Wall street, it showed that, if an average of 15 shares were allowed to each, the quantity held om speculation could not be less than 48,000 shares, most of which was on hypothecation. ‘This publication, when united with the informal mect- ing of some of the directors, cam leave no doubt from whom the statements have emanated, and for what pur- pose they were thrown out, and we have no doubt, in conformity to these previous admonitions, and certain pregpant whisperings, play house confidences, put forth to impose om the public credulity, that the speculators will seek relief in the length of the time in which the transfer books will continue closed, for, without some such holding up, the prospective eondition of the opera- tors is deplorable. The books will soon be closed, when no transfers can be made, nor loans called in ; the hypoth- ecation must, after that period, essentially remain at the risk of the lender, and in the presemt state of the coun- try, weeks are like ages. ‘The proposels for the two hundred thousand dollars of the seven per cent bonds of the Cleveland, Painesville, and Ashtabula Railroad Company, were opened yester- day afternoon, at the office of Winslow, Lanier & Co. Bids were made for about three hundred thousand dollars in all. The average of bids accepted was 85 1-5 per cent, netting to the company $170,305. The successful bid- ders were Harvey Seymour, Oarpenter & Vermilye, Na- tbhaniel Marsh, Charles M. Oakley, J. W., James Brown, Ira B, Carey, H. Pumpelly, Merchants’ Bank, Cleveland, and Wm. H. Ryseell. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the operations of the Rochester and Syracuse Railroad Company for the past year, according to a report made to the State Surveyor:— Rochester anv Brracuse Rainoan, 1851. bene! stock, as by charter and articles of amount Funded debt, as by last Totel amount now of funded debt. 821,000 —— tate of interest per annum on funded ant @ percent. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, today, amounted to $60,361 27; payments $4,177 73; balance, $3.131,223 35. The Boston and Worcester Railroad Company have de- clared a semi-annual diviaend of three and a naif per cent. The Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad Company have declared # dividend of $3 per share on the preferred stock. The Winnesrime: and Massachusetts Company have declared » dividend of four per cent. Messrs. Coolidge & Osgood. of 48 William street, inform us that all the emall sight bills of exchange on Liverpool. drawn by Harnden & Co., of New York, returned unpaid, will be paid, by giving their bills for the same on the Bel- fast Banking Company. This will secure to thore who bave made rmall remittances through Harnden & Co.,the payment of their bills on the other side, and the only in- convenience suffered will be @ little delay. Messrs. Coolidge & Orgcod intend continuing the foreign ex- ebange business, as heretofore carried on by Harnden & Co. Tn relation to the finances of the Reading Railroad Company, the Philadelphia Ledger says:—* We know no- thing positively, and we probably know as much on that point as any one outside the board of managers. There are differences of opinion, and all is but matter of opinion. We, yesterday, raw a statement in figures from one inti- mately acquainted with the business of the company, and that statement set down a cash dividend of four per cent im Januaery next, and a further cash dividend of six per cent within the coming year, besides a twelve per cent stock dividend from the company's sinking fund, making in all twenty-two per cent.’ Among the notices of applications to the next session of the New Jersey Legislature, is one for « charter for railroad from the New York and Erle Railroad, near Ra- mapo, to the Huason river, with the privilege of estab- lishing manufasetories and steamboat navigation om the Hudeon. The bank of Hamburg, South Carolina, has declared a dividend of $3 60 per sbare (of ($30 eaeh) for the half year onding Ist January next, making 16 per cent for the current year. The Bank of the State of North Ca- rolina bas declared « semi-annual dividend of five per cent—making an annual dividend of ten and » quarter per cent that this institution has declared for the year 1861. ‘The Etna Insurance Company of Hartford has de- clared a dividend of tem dollars per share, payable on demand. The receipts of the company for the month of October alone, were about ninety thousand dollars. The Buffalo and Rochester Railroad Company ha: declared a dividend of five per eent, from the earning» of the past six months. ‘The earnings of the Ogdensburg Railroad Company for the month of November, 1851, amounted to $35,- 102 40, agninat $90,464 19 for the same month last year, showing an increase of $7,728 21. The business of De cember will probably exhibit a greater gain over the same month Inst year. The capacity of the road was fully tested one day, during which the large number of ten thousand barrels of ficur were tranepotted from Ogdens- burg to Rouse’s Point. This road. in connnection with the Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad, will nearly supply the demand for breadstuffs for conrumption in the eastern seaports. Heretofore, that rection of the country bas been eimost entively ehut out from commn- nication with the interior during the suspension of navi- gation, and breadetuffs have ruled unusually high during the winter months. ‘The Secretary of the Bxecutive Department of the State of Georgia gives notice that he will receive, until the 24 of February next, proposals for two hundred | thowra: These bonds will be issued in sums of five hundred dol lars each, with coupons attached and will draw interes: at coven per cent per annum, payable semi-annually at the Bank of the State of Georgia, in Savannah.
