Prices have been pretty uniform, and the transactions to about the usua extent. At the close of the year, the stock market is usually dull and depressed, and this year will probably mot be em exception. For more than six months the fancies have been steadily accumulating in Wall street. Outsiders bave béen gradually getting rid of their stocks. ‘The brokers and regular street operators have been com- pelled to take them as they were put upon the market, ‘and, in the absence of any demand out of Wall street, ave beem obliged to carry them. Large quantitiesheve been bypothecated, and the banks are as full of them as is deemed safe and proper. This enables swall ope- rators to carry large loty of {stoek; but in the event of a eudden call being made for joans on such securities, there would be quantities ef steck put upon the market snfficient to produce @ moderate sized panic among the bulls. This result hae long beon in anticipation; but the efforts to prevent such a collapse have thus far been successful. It is our impression that unproductive fancy stocks, the market value of which cannot be less than five millions of dollars, are held in Wall street, princi- pally by the banks,on hypothecation. This is a dead ‘weight upon hol@ers, which is continually increasing by the accumulation of interest. There are stocks now in the market which have been for ten or fifteen years the foot ball of epeculators, and notwithstanding the ennya! addition to their cost im the shape of interest, the cur- rent value is considerably less than at that time. The market value of these stocks at the present time range: fro m forty to fifty per cent below what it was ten years ago. The probability is, that ten years hence, these fancy stocks will not be worth more than they are at thie moment, and it is possible they may be actually worth @ great deal less Within the past year feveral new stocks have been added to the list, whieh have absorbed a portion of the floating capital, snd attracted it from the old, worm cut fancies. Speca- lation has been quite moderate during the present year the effect of which is seen in the concentration of stocks ‘This is the invariable reeult of quiet times. Speculation dirtributes stock securities of all kinas. The move- ‘ ment of stocks is somewhat similar to the tide. They Dave their regular ebb and flow. Sometimes it is high tide in Wall street, when ev-ry place is flooded with stocks; st other times it thin. tide out of the street when outsiders are full of the fancies. There is, at this time,» perfect deluge in Wall street and we fear that tome of the residents of that vicinity will be swamped "Before it abates. There must be some change in the stock market before the lapse of many dayz, and we fear that change will be of an unfavorable character. All th: influence the brokers have been able to control, has bee Drought to inflate prices for stocke; so far, it has beer ‘witheut avail, and we begin to think that their power ¢ put up or put down prices is not, and never was, so gre» as they have had the credit of. The outsiders bold: power, and can control the market as they piense, if they will only Beep coo! and avoid all excitement. ‘We have never hesitated to present what, in our esti mation, appeared to meet the careful consideration o: the commercial community, and if in carrying out thi- determination, we should over estimate the advantage- of cur enterprise, or too severely depreciate the impor. tance of another, we can only say, the fault is not sharge- able to the judgment we exercise, but to the false plav which are presemted by the managers of the differen companies before the public. We present and compare fects and statements as they are given, and having 6 done, consiusious must pass for thelr worth, be they whet they may. One thing. however, is most certain—ic. all cases where the officials of an incorporated com pany openly enter the market ae epeculators in th: stock spd securities cf that company, we ever have. acd ever shall, condemn them in the strongest terms | ‘The advantages which they posses: enable them tr operate exclusively, and of course more surely an. profitably, tham tose with whom they deal. It is t! + wsof no importance whether the market value of any atock rise OF fall, nor, except through some cornerin} operation, do we think that any influence can be intro. eed to change the natural course of events. Hai ‘ ‘when we see & state of unnatural infistion, inconsistent with the condition of the money market, then we art * fed to the conclusion thet there must be appliances t/ produce such an ancmaly. which ought to be probed. In compection with this subject, it would be wei enough to inquire, in whose hands and under what con trol is the large amount of receipte which ought to have been set aside for the payment of the January interest, and the anxiously jooked for dividend ef the Erie Rail. road Company whether the whole or any part of the : ecm pany’ revenue is, or has been, employed to sustain the rpeculative stock movements of the cornering comb: mation’ We would alse like to be informed why. by whom, an informal meeting of the directors wat ateembied to pronounce, by anticipation, sixty days b: fore the termination of the year's business, what div. dend would be declared; and whether such informal pro- ceeding be not contrary to all practice, entirely inson- tirtent with the intelligence and integrity of regular basi eee tranractions’ We have not yet seen the report of this company to the Legisiature, but we hepe they have givens full history of their fiecal negotiations, and the smount of their several indebtedness; how the same have accrued; what further moneys will be required for | the completion of the preeent and the laying of a second track, the nature of their eontracte with the isteral roads, with the amount of such extra capital on whish they Dave to pay dividends; and, summing the entire agere- | gate capitale—the amount, the solidarity of the securities op the market? To the public it is a matter of import. | Soce that « detailed statement should be preeemted— that the breadth and the depth of the receipts, indebdt. i dines, and the expenditures, sheuld be plainly reported There can be no good motive for any concealmente; and produce dirtruat | At o epecial mectiog 11 the Northern Railroad Com pany, held at Ker.e, N.
