M. ‘There was considerable depression in the stock market to-day. The transactions were more limited at the first board than we have known fore long time, and specula- tore find it very difficult to sustain prices among them- eetves. There are no outsiders in the street, and they cannot be induced to take held. Money is plenty enough for all ordinary purposes. Loans on good securities oan Le wegotiated for any amount, at six per cent, notwithstand- ivg which duliness reigns in the stock market, and is Likely tofor some time. At the first board Reading Railroad declined 5 per cent.; Erie Railroad, *{;‘Harlem, +4; Hud- con Railrced, 3; Norwich and Worcester, 4; Erie Income Bonds, 3; ; Delaware and Hudson, 3. ‘The falling of in Delaware and Hudsen Canal bas astonished some of the eld holders. Tne last semi-annual dividend, of only three per cent, bas induced many to believe that hereafter the regular semi-annual paymente will not be above tha’ rate. The depreciation in this stock shows how uncer- tein stock securities of all kinds are. The steamship Africa, for Liverpool, carried out $1,425,873 in specie, «¢ which $1,219,003 was in American geld, $160,000 in American silver, and $52,880 in English coin. ‘The receipts at the office of the Aseistant Treasurer of this port to-day, amounted to $48,350. Paymenta $13,891 14. Balance, 3,272,559 29. Books for subscription to the capital stock of the “ Air Line” Railroad company, are now open at the office of Carpenter & Vermilyea, No. 44 Wall street. Only about one bundred and fifty thousand dollars are wanted te complete the required amount—ene million of dollars ‘We bave no doubt this will be taken at once, which will @ecure the construction of this important line. There has been no entrance at the Custom House of « ‘Vessel from a foreign port for two days in suecession— yesterday apd to-day—a singular circumstance, not known to have occurred before within the past forty Years About seven years since, there was one day on ‘which no versel entered from # foreign port,’caused then by & severe snow storm; but no occurrence like the present bes taken place within the peried above named ‘The Erie Railroad Company furnished its organs yee- terday with the annexed etatement of earnings for the month of November, in each of the past two years -— New Yorx ano Enir B. from passergers and mail. This is not very fa- ‘vorable for reduced expenses. It would be well enough tor the management to not go too far in their report of expenditures, to attempt to cut them down too mueb. It will be pretty difficult to make the public believe that the running expenses of the Erie are less than those of other rceds. It bas been semi-officially etated that the rupming expenses during the present year will not mush exceed forty per cent. Now, apy railroad engineer kno bet this is simply absurd. It is pretty generally know. ‘that the expenses of our railroads average nearer sixty per cent than fifty; and it is ridiculous to talk about the Erie,Ralircad, with ite high grades and bad curves being worked at forty per cent. ‘We bave not heard anything within the past few days about the dividend of the Erie Railroad Company, due on ghe first of January next. The last report was that four per cent would be paid. It is our impression that it will be less than that, If, which we doubt, the company have earned four per cent, it is wrong to pay it all out in the ebape ofa dividend. Its finascer are not in a condition © permit euch absurd fimanciering. It is well knowa that the Erie Kailroad Company have submitted to heavy loeves in the negotiations they havé made, that their second mortgage bonds were sold st 80 per cent, and their convertible at 00; and as there has been a large in- creare of indebtedness since, it can be easily foreseen that every sttempt to renew there incumbrances must be at- tended with extreme diffoulty, and expecially #0 shoul there ¢xirt in the public mind any impression that the funde had been improvidently employ It ie notorious that the company have made no pre- vision for the discharge of their debts, and that they bave no plan of operation by which they ase to be extin guished. There is mo fund laid aside for fucure necesi- ties or comtingencies, and, to cap the climax of improvi: dence, we have it now stated, that a dividend is to be Rade, which, carrying with it the undoubted marks of extravagance, ought, and no doubt will ‘serease tbe company's difficulties in all future negotiations The @ividends heretofore made were in virtue of an origioal contract with the incoming stockholders, which were to continue until the road was ip operation to Dunkirx; tod thir withcut regard to net earnings, and in fact they were paid cut of capital, but mow, that the conditions of the centrect have been complied with, the making of any further dividends must henceforth depend on the bonert revenue received from the road, and the capacity ef the ccmpany to continue the distribution. Im a great measure, it is understood that the present Niet of stock holders shows vtry little other than tem porary holders, operators for a rise; few, if any, have or will contribute » dollar to the support of the company’s credit or necessities ; and there can be very little doubt, that, within ixty days, most of them will have parted with the whole of their interest, especially should they Be able to Feil at an advance Ar we do not hold ourselves entirely isolated with re. yect to the substantial prosperity of New York, we can bet, therefore, fecl indifferent to the feithful adminie- tration of the fircal cencerns of the Erie, nor to any other asecotation in whieh the finances of the commu nity are so deeply invol and we do not care whether thore who operate for or against @ rise in the etocks, shall or shall not be pleated with our remarks. It ir to us a mat. ter of the most perfect indifference, knowing that those whe agree with our views will approve of our courte ; while thore whore interests are adverse, will not be in fluenced by their honest integrity On 4 revision of the statements of the company’s in- debtednes we find an imposing list of first and second itgage bonds, their income and convertibles, followed dy liquidated and unliquidated demande; and last but not the lent, significant and important company accep tances. iued, negotiated and circulated, without the tiguature of the President, notwithstanding, as reported the proceeds are deposited with the Treasurer, who { the principal operator in making the raise If the directors have made fortunes out of ledge, we can see no renson to complain, t ct know me Geld wae open te all, and thus far the publi ery m tive for congratulation as without this important pecu piety stimuiue the completion of the road might nev have teen consummated ; but it is now proper to bear Hmird f enooemical management hat every species « y thet the horimes of traneportation may be garried op at the pheapest rate. in order euccesfully to compete with the rival institutions which are everywhere springing up. The shipmente to Havre for the month were unusually large. To the West Indies, South and Central America, the exports show great increase on previous months. Nearly one-third of the total value cy domestic products exported in November, went to foreign ports on this side of the Atlantic. Ina few years the bulk of shipments abroad will be to other ports than those in Europe. We shall find the trade with the West ndies, South America, and Central America, much more profitable than that with Europe, and it is highly impor- tant that we should cultivate commercial relations with those countries. There is an extensive field for traffic in those sections of the world, and we can monopolize it if we please. We must build up markets ourselves in thore countries, by. the emigration and enterprise of our own people, after which they will look to us for supplies. Our export trade with Europe has reached its maximum. Our agricultural products are only taken in famine times. The raw material for their manufactures they only take because they cannot get it anywhere else, and the time is not far distant when we shall have less of all these articles to export to any country than we have now. We shall not have to look to Europe for markets for our rav material for manufacturing purposes, or for food We thall be greater consumers of our own products, and have lees for other nations. ‘The quantity of flour, wheat, corn, and barley left at tide- water, during the fourth week in November, in th years 1860 and 1861, was as follows :— Flour, bbls, — Wheat, bu. , bu. The falling off in receipts for several weeks past, compared with last year, has made ® great difference in the result. In the early part of October there was « very great excess in the receipts of flour and wheat; but according to the latest returns, the surplus had been nearly extinguished. The increase in the receipts of Indian corn bas been more than one handred per cent. Lard and bacon show an excess, while butter, wool, beef, pork and ashes, have decreased. The Erie Railroad has brought to market a great deal of produce which for- merly came bythe canal, which may partially account for the rapid decrease lately in receipts by canal.
