value in the market. The banks, with light deposits and small receipts, discount moderately, but the applications are not numerous. Btock operations in State street lack vitality and strength. The pulse of speculation beate feebly, and transactions during the week have been attended with eee fluctuation than usual. As a general thing, prices for the speculative stocks bave had s dowoward inolina- thon, but the market closed to-day « trifle firmer. ‘The gross receipts of the Boston, Concord and Mont- pera Company, for October, amounted to $16,- ‘9877 78, against $14,885 96 for the same month last year, showing an increase of $1,491 92. The negotiation be- tween the Boston, Coacord and Montreal and Passump- ic roads, in reference to # connection at Newbury, Ver- mont, as proposed by the latter road, has not resulted in any agreement for that purpose. The direotors of the Boston, Concord and Montreal caused three lines to be wurveyed, showing a saving in distance of some half dosen miles, and in expense less than $50,000; but as the most favorable survey would require a grade of 66 to 75 feet for about four miles, to get down to the Passumpsic track im Newbury, it was deemed substantially impracticable, ‘and the rosd will be built to Wells river, as originally ed. ‘The steamship Cambria, from Boston, for Liverpool to- morrow—(Wednesday)—will carry out about five hun- red thousand dollars in specie. We have no steamer ‘The revenue of the United States, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1851, exceeds fifty-five millions of dol- Jars. The amount of duties received at the port of San Franciseo, for the year ending June 30, 1851, amounted to three millions two hundred thousand dollars. ‘There is evidently » movement in Harlem Rail- road, and the stock has exhibited great activity for several days past. We have frequently expressed our surprise at ite not having taken place long before, for there is no stock in the market which has so just and meritorious cause for advancement from the present low prices to considerably higher points, than this stock. ‘The road is nearly completed to Chatham Four Corners, ‘fand_we heartily congratulate the stockholders and all thers interested, in the gratifying result of the comple- tion of this work. We understand that the company are making preparations for the opening of the Harlem Bailroad to Albany in the beginning of the month of December next. Those who are acquainted with the par- ticular location of this road, and the history of the country through which it passes, must be satisfied of its productiveness and the great profits it will yield to the stockholders arising from the peculiar advantages it Posresses over other railroads in point of tocation, parti- eularly on its way travel, both for passengers and freight. from which they will derive large and increasing receipts, being free from competition. The inhabitants along the road having no other convenient method of travelling to ‘New York, must seek the Harlem Railroad from necessity, Contrast the position of this company now with what it was only four or five years ago, and for that purpose take « ride out om the line of the Harlem Railroad, through the populous towns and villages, such as Mor- risania, Fordham, Whiteplains, and other delightful locations, and ask yourselves these questions: —Wh:t were they five years ago? What are they now? It would be impossible for us to give an outline of the growth of these places, and their history, in the short space we are necessarily compelled to confine our remarks, but but we will add, in proof of the growing prosperity of this company, that upon this road from New York to Dover, ‘which is only eighty miles, for the last five years they have increased in their receipts over one hundred thou- sand dollars every year over the former. The completion of this railroad has already given rise to the extension of other railroads In the interior, 0 as to connect with the Harlem railroad. Already we see acompany has been formed by the name of the “ Lebanon Springs Railroad Company,” which has been organized to construct a rail- road from Chatham Four Corners to Moosic river, or Bennington, 23 miles north, whieh, when completed, wi!) connect the Harlem Railroad with the Western Vermont railroads, extending their lines into the great artery o! railroads running through by a direct line of commun’- ation frem the city of New York to Montreal, Canade. Maps and the preliminary surveys have been made and Published for this short connecting link to those railroad- by the engineers, who are now en the line north of Chat- ham Four Corners, locating the road, which will be soon put under contract. Notwithstanding the continued and increasing pros- perity of thie company, there ere many unscrupulous persons using fallacious statements to create a depres- sion in this stock; but that depression cannot long con tinue, as it soon becomes known they have no founiation One of these idle stories circulated in the street is, that the extension bonds for two millions of dollars, for thr completion cf their road from Dover to Chatham Four Corners, which have twenty years to run, bearing sever per cent interest, and convertible into stock, will be con verted, and this new stock, thus converted, thrown upon the market. This is too ridiculous fer any sensible man to entertain the belief of for one moment; that bonds bearing seven per cent interest should be sold at the greatly reduced price at which the stock is mow selling for in the market, and thus lese the seven per cent for a lesser rate of interest. The old bonds of the company are selling at about par, and are mot converte. But these extension convertible bond- ere far more valuable than the old bonds previously is ued by the company, because they not only bear seven per cent interest, but have this additional advantage that when the stock sells at over par, they can then, ii they choose, convert those bends into stock, aud thur Gerive the profit in the premium; but there is not the least danger of their conversion into new stook before that time, These bonds are too valuable, and will com. mand a better price than the old bonds. seis Exchan: we Ei ae sxssebige S8ie¥SeesuStex.Fex CITY TRADE KEPORT.
