SHIPWRECKS, ANB SUPPOSED LOSS OF LIFE, dies, Sic, Sie An Appalling Tragedy. — WIFE MURDERED BY HER HUSBAND, AND SUICIDE OF THE MURDERER. : Aunany, Nov. 20, 1961. ‘This morning a man named John Moore, and Elizabeth Moore, his wife. who lived about five miles from this city. on the Deiaware turnpike, were found dead, both having been shot, Moore was forty aud bis wifs thirty years ofage. They had been out to house-warming, at a friend's, where they bad drank until they became very much intoxicated. Returning home, they are supposed to have quarrelled, and Mocre must have taken a double. barrelled fowling piece and blown off the right side of h's wife's head, with one of the charges. Rallroad Engineer Acquitted, Cananpaiaua, Nov. 20—8 P.M Robert C, Dickson, the railroad engineer who ran into auother train at Geneva, lart summer, in consequence of which, one person was killed amd several were injured, and who was under an indictment for ‘manslaughter, wes acquitted to-day. TROTTING MATCH—FINANCIAL AFFAIRS Bostox, Nov. 20, 1851, The trotting match between Rhode Island and St. Lawrence came off this afternoon over the Cambridge course. The terms were, two mile heats, in harness: Rhode Ieland won in two straight heats—the first in 5:26, and the second in 5:30. The betting waa shy, the track rather heavy, and there was not so many persons present as yesterday. To morrow there will be # trotting and a pacing match In stocks, there is « fair business doing, and the mar- ket generally is firmer. For money there is @ moderate demand, and rates are unchanged. ad Court of General Sessions, Before Judge Beebe, Aldermen Dodge and Ball. Nov 19.—Grand Larceny—Stealing 1.500 Dollars in Gold Coin. William Janigan, a German, was placed on trial, charged with having stolen fifteen hundred dollars in gold coin, the property of Charles Werner. on the 18th of August last, from his room,in a German boarding house in Liberty street. The jury acquitted the pri- soner Grand Larceny—Stealing $34 in Bank Bills, Gold, and Silver Coin --George Schmidt, a German, was tried for stealing thirty-four dcUars in bank bills, gold and sil ver coin, ou the Ist day of November, the property of Nicholas Schapps, of No. 47 Avenue A. Tue evidence was positive, aed the jury found him guilty. Sentence deferred Nov 2 —The Court sentenced the following prisoners this morning :--Wiiliam Varroll, convicted on the 14th November, for the crime of burglary in the second de- atee. septenced to the State prison for seven years and six months; William Bayly, convicted of burglary in the recond degree, ou November 10th, sentenced to State priron for six years and five months; Thomas King, convicted of grand larceny on November 13th, senteaced to State prison for two years and six months; Jane Collins, convicted of grand larceny om November 13th, sentepeed to the Lay ned we org for two years. Joseph H. Woegetaft, who was convicted of libel on November 18th, was brought up to receive bis sentence, and, on being asked by the Court what he had to say why sentence should not be passed upon him, be said that Lexow, the prosecutor. had net only vated, but also persecuted him; that he bad ruined him; and that he was perfectly innocent of the cbarges. He begged the Court not to add to bis dlegrace by a severe punishment. The Court said he was a lawyer, and had the benefit of @ gcod educetion; he therefore, l-ast of any, n, onght to bave committed such an offence He brought cbarecter tn tseue, and as that character was proved to be a very bad one, he (Wagstaff) could not expect the: seme favor from the Court that & person of good oha- racter would have. The very fact of his living at a disorderly house, with an infamous woman, was suffcient to how his character. The Court would hiw the dirgrace of the penitentiary, and tentence him to thirty days imprisonment, and $100 fine. The prisoner was then removed. Before Justice Osborn. Yesterday afternoon, at three o’clock, a further inves- tigation was held before the magistrate, at the Police Court, Halls of Justice, Centre street. The room was densely crowded with witnesses, amd other persons anxiously listening to the evidence, as detailed by the witnesses. The confession of Richard Earl, one of the gang concerned in the forgeries, was taken, and, cer- tainly, his testimony, which earries with it the appear- of truth, details a deep coneerted plan, and well de- vised, to pass off forged cheeks and avoid detection.
