M. We bave no change of consequenee to report in quo- tations for the leading railroad securities, There was considexable activity in Harlem and Reading, the latter at lower prices. The market has no life or energy. With one or two exceptions, he demand for stocks is confined almost entirely to the regular street speculators. Nor- ‘wich and Worcester is steadily improving, and will, with- cut doubt, soon reach the point from which it receded. ‘The most favorable reports have been received of the traffic operations cf the company, and the next semi- annual dividend will, it is stated, be large enough to bring the aggregate for the year up to the original esti- mate. As this road depends principally upon its local travel, and that is constantly increasing, we see no rea- sem why it is not,at present prices, a good investment A few months since the market price was seventy per cent, or twelve per cent above currentrates Its finauces are represented tobe in a better condition tham they ever before bave been, and the stock is, there- fore, worth more. Harlem is another good railroad stock, andin any state of the money mark:t, should command better-prices. There must be some artificial, ‘unnatural pressure upon this stock that keeps it down. It may be suddenly removed one of these days, when prices will run up to points represeating its real value, We have no idea what the next dividend will be; but it ought not t» be lees than three or four per cent. The net earnings this six months will be equel to more than four per cent @n the total cost of the road and all its appur- tenances. Erie Railroad was quiet, to-day,without change in price. Holders will discover, before they are much older, that all that glitters is not gold. The stock is sell- img for much more than it is worth, notwithstanding which it may go higher. Speculation frequently works wonders in Wall street. New Jersey Zinc Company closed firm at our quotations. There appears to be a growing demand for the stock. Reading Railroad is weak and depressed All idea of @ dividend having been abandoned, prices will doubtless gradually settle d>wn. ‘The receipte at the office of the Assistant Treasurer 0 this port, to-day, amounted to $71,414 02; payments, $5 - 305 33—balance, $8,237,732 87. This is small compared with weeks earlier in the season, but large considering that itis the dullest time in the year, and that we are sbout entering upon a period of great inactivity. The amount entered for warehousing, last week, was unusu- ally large. It will be seen that the withdrawals werg small, and that the stock in the warchouse must be ra- pidly increasing. This accumulation is for the opening of the spring trade nd is composed principally of silk manufactures. The Winchester and Potomac Railroad Company hag declared m half yearly dividend of six percent. The revenue of the company for the year ending October lat, 18651, was $98,486 07, being $1,623 61 more than that of the preceding year, and the largest ever received by the road. Out of this, the annuity of $5,000 to the Btate, and two dividends, of six per cent each, amounting to $20,990) have been met, The second of these dividends will be payable on the Ist of November proximo. The dividend of twelve per cent per annum, the President anticipates: will be regularly kept up. ‘The earnings of the Boston, Concord and Montreal Rail- road Company, during the month of September, were $17,168 25, against $15,102 66 for the corresponding month in 1850, showing an increase of $2,005 59. ‘The Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad is now completed thirty-eight miles this side of Pittsburg, and the grading and bridging is about finished to Massillon, a distance of 120 miles from Pittsburg. Four gangs, comprising 400 men (the Pittsburg Gazette says), are now laying the track between Brighton and Alliance, and the road is to be finished to Alliance by the 15th of December, and to Massillon by the 12th of January. ‘The heaviest portion of the road is built, boing the bridge at Beaver, and the ascent of the hills to the table lands of Ohio, The bridge over the Beaver is 750 feet long, erected on piers of stone, and the track is 50 feet from the water, At Wallace’s Run is a trestle bridge 80 feet high, the trestles resting on stone piers. Height, from bottom of run to track, 180 feet. Here the road leaves the Beaver river, and winds among the hills, stea. dily ascending, until it reaches the summit, eight miles from Brighton, having obtained an elevation of 390 feet. At this point there is a deep cut about half a mile long, seventy-two feet at its deepest point, nearly the whole of it a rock formation. The work took about two years and cost $48.000. As the Ohio and Pennsylvania road crosses the Cleve. land and Pittsburg at Allianee, a direct railroad con munication with the Iron City will be opened early in the coming winter. It will be an important route for travel and business. The Turks Island Royal Gazette, in speaking of the trade of the island, says :—“ In consequence of very many vessels having lately arrived here in ballast, while our provision markets continue to command such high and Temunerative prices as might lead to the anticipation of a different state of things, if the recent revision of the fiscal ordinances of these islands had been more gene- Tally made known, we take this mode of calling the at- tention ef the mercantile interests abroad to the fact of the entire abrogation, within this presidency, of all ton- nage duties, and the otherwise very liberal reduction which has been effected in our tariff, especially in regard to provisions, and every description of article required jp the culture of our staple—salt—such as hay, oats, os- naburgs, bagging, &e., &c., as also mules, which are ex- eimppt from duty, and are among the articles in most fre- quent demand.” The President of the Mobile and Obio Railroad Com’ pany has iseued an address to the friends of that enter- price, in which the history and progress of the work are reviewed, and the following route and length proposed: — In Wayne county, centrally. 34 miles, In Clarke, through premreed halt! 2335 4 In Lauderdale. central 8423 « In Kemper, easter! halt 215 « In Noxube, cent 261-7 In Lowudes, westecn side 215 « In Monsoe, southwestern part. ... The average cost per mile is put down to @ little over $15,000, The two per cent loan for Mobile, and a further subscription of $323,000 in Missis- sippi, south of Pontoctoe county, will secure the im- mediate commencement of 234 miles more of the road. Active preparations will be commenced in Tennessee, during the present month. A new bank hae just been started in Illineis, called the “Tilinols River Bank"?
