Mr. Webster's Speech at a Mass Meeting of Young Whigs in Salem, Mass. Bostow, Oot. 25, 1851. Anumerous delegation of Young Whigs attended « ‘Mass meeting in Salem last night and, on their return at & late hour, proceeded with # band of musie to the Re- vere House, where they gave numerous and hearty cheers for Mr. Webster. Mr. W. appeared on the bal- cony in answer to the cheers, and made a brief speeeh to his friends, He alluded to the laws of the natural world as an example for elementary and Gxed principles of ection in the political world. A crisis would some- times occur, when men would be called back to consider the original principles of the government under which they live. We live in such atime, when it seems as if there was an earnest desire to dissolve the constitutional and legal restraints under which we dwell asa people. But I think the crisis has passed over, I think the country is recovering itself, North and South. There is less feeling at the Bouth in favor of breaking up the Union. They have found en admirably coave- nient cmnibus in co-operation, in which to ride out of their dificulty. How those at the North, who are ar- rayed ecainst the peace and harmony of the country when they find themselves in a minority—as they cer- tainly will—how they will extricate themselves from their position, and in what kind of a conveyance they will escape, remains to be seen. He wished than well.
