There is every probability that the gross revenue of the eanal will fall far short of that which was received during the Past feason, (1850) which was then found, as appears by the report of April, 1851, to be entirely insufficient to cover the current expenses and the interest due on the floating and bonded debt, which, collectively, amouats & about $510,000; but by theiesue of an additional quantity of preferred stock, the aggregate of the preferred stock will be nearly $1,100,000, The difficulty, however, will be to negotiate the preferred stock, as the amount of dividends to be paid at the rate of ten per cent would exceed the gross receipts of the business of the canal; but this is not the Greatest impediment—the owners of the mortgage ilebt, modestly denominated the bonded, may not be willing to exchange their better security. which covers the whole property, the caral, franchise, &o., for an equal amount ¢f preferred stock, which would, in effect, be nothing more nor lens than to make a division of their security, for the benefit of otluers.
