I think, however, at the high price of provi sivns and Jabor, the mines, rich as they seem to be, ‘When some of the fertile valleys in the neighborhood are cultivated, labor and provisions wili be cheaper. Within balf a mile of the presidio are several large hills of magnetics iron ore, similar to the Pilot iincb ond Snow Mountain of Missouri. This ore could be, at a small cost, converted into bar-iron, d in a Catlin forge, the hills abounding in timber fit for fuel. Terrinte Tornavo at Panvcan, Ky.—A dread- ful storm bas just passed over our city, and the mo- ment we write great excitement prevails among our citizens. ‘The entice damage we have not been able, as yet, to arcertain. So far as our knowledge of the particulars extends, it is as follows :—The steamboats lying up at this place were all more or legs injured. The steamers Dover and Caledonia are total wrecks, and the Gilobe-and Cherokee in a sinking condition, The America broke from her cables and lost her chimneys overboard ; her ‘* Tex- as’ was blown to one side, and the upper part of her cabin considerably damaged. Several lives are said to be lost, but we are unable to learn who, or how many, but supposed to be ten or fifteen. —Padwah (ky ) Democrat, Avgust 9th. Ham, Storm at Boston.—About four o'clock yesterday afternoon we were visited by a very se- vere thunder storm, accompanied by hail. The thunder was very loud, the rain heavy, and the hail a little aheed of anything our citizens hai wit- nessed for a long time. Some of the stones which were picked up measured over an inch in circum- ference, and weighed from a half to two-thirds of an ounce each. During the storm the lightning struck the mainmast of the schooner Eglantine, lying at Evans’ wharf, South Cove, and shivered it into a thousand and one pieces. Four men, in the cabin at the time, were prostrated and stunned by the ehock, but recovered without receiving fur- ther injury. The storm continued at intervals until pearly eight o'clock. There was a report in circulation that some persons had been killed by lightning.
