Sarurvay, August 9—6 P.M. ‘The stock market opened this morning heavy. Daur- ing the past two or three days the advance has been too rapid, and we have just what might have been antici- pated—a reaction. Erie Railroad has experienced the Greatest fluctuations, and has been operated in more largely than any other raliroad stock on the list. Kead- ing Railroad has been quite active, and the bears have hammered it very heavily, so that the improvement has Deen only to a moderate extent. Harlem has not reacted ‘as much as others, and the probability is that it will hold its own, Norwich and Worcester, Long Island, and Btonington, have been comparatively steady, The sualier class of fancies have not pressed upon the market much lately; and holders have not, therefore, made such sacrifices as have been realized on stock more dificult to carry, on account of the high price of shares, Itis porsible the market may rest, for a few days, at present points. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $159,290 43; payments, $17,566 20—balance, $2.76 554 92. ‘The amount of specie exported from this port, during the past week, amounted to $161,520, making the tota; for the year, to the 9th inst., $25 250,242. ‘There are reports from Philadelphia of several failure: in that city. At ao early hour this morning, every road leading to | our town was thronged with pedestrians and cavalcades of horsemen, coming in to witness the execution of the three men convicted of the massacre of the Oosden fam- al ily ip Dlarch last, the horrid character of the deed having caused a general desire through all the eastern counties of the Btate to baveu sight of men capable of such an atrocity. The steamers Portsmouth, Port Deposit, and Duponte, each arrived from neighboring towns crowded to excess with passengers, Capt Betts’ troop of horse from Queen Anne, with the two companies of troops from this county, and several handred armed cltisens or- dered out by the Sheriff, were also soon marching and countermarching through our streets, forming quite am imposing array, all under the command of Col, James B. Ricaud. ‘The prisoners were all visited, last night, by some of their friends and male relatives, and took their final leave of them, after which they were called on by some of the reverend gentlemen in attendance, who prayed and conversed with them for some time, both Abraham Taylor and Nicholas Murphy joining with great fervor in their devotions, whilst Shelton exhibited that same morose and hardened disposition that he hes evinced ever tince his arrest. On being asked whether he still persist- ¢d in bis assertions of innocence, and believed that he was wrongfully convicted, he replied, with great animation, ‘Believe it! I don’t believe anything about it, sir; tke jt’ Mr. Ricaud and Mr. Moore, who were counsel for the prisoners, were also with them during the evening. On reaching the jail at an early hour this morning, found several clergymen already with them, and the prisoners awaiting their doom with an apparent almost stoical indifference. The jailers reported that they had all rested ag well as usual, and that Murphy had slept all night very sound, Murpby and Taylor both joined in prayer with great fervor, while Shelton appeared to take no notice of anything that was said with regard to death and the future, and, when spoken to directly, would give an evasive answer, and change the subject immediately to something more agreeable. The Rev. Mr. Majors, of Delawaro, usod his utmost ex- ertions, this morning, to awaken the prisoners toam ap- preciation of their awful position, and. while Shelton pre- served his stoical indifference, beth Murphy and Taylor joined in shouts of praise to Almighty God, weeping, jm great anguish, at the thought of leaving their wives and children alone, to combat the cold charities of the world, with the stigma of being the offspring of men who had expiated their lives on the gallows. ‘The hour of 9 o'clock having arrived, the Seoseitane ceeded to array the prisoners in the white ro! pared for them, and then plaioned thelr arms, Murphy, on having the robe placed on him, remarked, “I suppose this is my last dress, but some one else ought to wear it;” smd when the black exp was pluced on his head, he efelaimed “ Well, Tsuppore Tam dressed now,” in in alta & pevulant manser. After being thus robed and pinioned in their separate cells, they were brought out into the hall, and met together for the first time sinoe their con- viction. Upon Taylor's seeing Shelton, he moved up to him rapidly, and appealed to blun for God's sake to tall what be knew of tl conversation that had taken place between him end Drummond some time before their arrest. Shelton, how= ever, with that morose and hidden expression, which usually merked his countenance, moved on one side, re- marking “Ihave nothing to aay,and nothing to tall, x- cept that I am innocent.” ‘The aj e matter, and especialiy to relate a i ppeal was again by Taylor, but not heeded by Shelton, when they marched, 38 i mile from the j Along the whole line of there was an mense ae of spect in- ~— males and females; but to the lasi of ladies of Kent county, be it said, not » white pate, ‘was present at the execution, all has retired to their homes after the procession had passed the town.
