The banking mcvement of this State and of the country at large, in January, 1887, wae immensely inflated. Four months after that time the banks throughout the Union sus- pended epecie paymentr, and a very great contraction immediately followed. In January, 1841, the loans and Giscounte cf the banks of this State amounted to #54 001,163; im January, 1843, to $52,022,280. From that ime, the movement has been steadily expanding, and in «bout eight years has increased more than one hundred yer cent. We see no way of arresting this inflation with- ut causing & great deal of embarrassment and distress; and to let it go om will eurely lead to a general revalsion. it is impossible to avoid serious difficulties, no matter what course is pursued.
