Moxpay, Jan. 16—6 P.M. ‘The stock market opened heavy this morning. We have not noticed so much apathy on the part of «pecu- Jators fora long time, and there appears to be no dis- position to purchase. Holders of stock. generally are pretty firm, and appear by no means anxious to sell; but there is no demand for speculation, and it would not surprise us if prices, under this state of things, gave way. The leading railroad stocks will hold their own in the face of an inactive market; but the weaker class of fancies require an excitement in the public mind to sustain the least inflation im prices. The immediate cause of this depression in the stock market does not appear, There has been nochange in the position of financial affairs; money continues cheap and abundant, end there has been no falling off in the productivencss of our railroad companies. With two or three excep- tions, the market price of every stock on the liet is below its intrinsic value; and it will be seen, by com- parison, that notwithstanding the speculative move- ments from time to time in the market, stocks generally rule but little above prices current twelve months rince. During the present actirity of busi- ness, and the mania for travelling, railroads must rapidly increase in value as investments; and it therefore matters little with those not compelled to put their stocks upon | United Sti the market, what local influence eperates from time to | je seen from the fellowing table. time to depress prices. It ia natural enough for specula- tors to realize profits, and their so doing may temporarily depress the market. This is usually exporienced ufter a steady improvement for several weeks; but the same clase of operators come in again after prices have fallen | off two or three per cent, and the inflation becomes still greater than the previous one, The excitement in Read- ing Railroad has nearly subsided, Prices have fallen | back to about the starting points, When a proper level | has been reached, we may look for anether movement similar to that which has just terminated. Harlem Rail- road fell off to-day half per cent. Present prices will bring in a large number of new buyers, and the stock will be- come better distributed, and fall into stronger hands ‘This stock cannot remain long at the low price now rul- ing. Long Island was a little better to-day, There is no stock offering of conseque there will not be at pr ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of | this port to-day, amounted to $ GO—balance. $2,638 626 04 ‘The shipments of specie continue active, The London packet t ok out, to day, $145,000 in silver, and the Havre Pocket took out $50,000 im gold, Large engagements have ben made for shipment by the steamship Axia, on Wednesday. and the steamship Pacific on Saturday The Havre de Grace Bank farce is at an end. It will be seen that the financiers engaged in this Havre de Grace Bank, are the came that figure in the Susquehannah, the Le- high, the Plainfield, the Delaware Bridge, and the State Bank of Morris, and that some of theit financial opera- tions are of the most extraordinary character. The facts presented upon this trial may be laughable to thore net interested in a pecuniary way, but it is a eericus matter to those who have been swindled by these fee Specific duties 30 per cent duties, demoothness, and to be ready for delivery | Arrival and thelr products. Should the above ratio of in- crease continue during the year, the total earnings for 1861 will exceed $460,000. The managers of the road estimate that its earnings for the current year will not vary much from $400,000, and that this business will produee a net profit of twelve to fifteen per cent. to the stockholders. Our trade and intercourse with Canada and other Bri- tish provinees on this continent, though not very impor- tant to this country, is, in consequence of the proposition of certain measures in the Canadian Parliament to coerce Congress.to pass the “ reciprocity bill,” becoming a topic of considerable interest and extended discussion. The annexed table exhibits the imports and exports of Cana- da, for the year 1850, The value is in Canadian currency —four dollars to the pound:— Commence oy Canava—Lnvorts ann Exronrs, 1850 407! Included in the ex- ports are $3,218,736 of “foreign merchandise,” which passed through our canals, in preference to mak- ing the passage of the St. Lawrence river. De- ducting this from the aggregate excess of exports to Canada, and it will be seen that our export trade with Canada, in the four years, was greater than our import trade. ‘The imports and exports of Canada with the United Btates, of vegetable food and lumber, for 1840 and 1849; exhibit large balance in favor of Canada, on the trade of the two years, as will be seen by the annexed state- ment. In 1840 this part of our trade was in our favor; in 1849 it was immensely in favor of Canada :— Trave in AGRICULTURAL Propvers Betwern CANADA AND THE Uniren StaTEs. This revolution in this trade ‘was brought about in such a short period, in spite of ou: duties. 1t appears by this that Canada prefers our mar- kets to her own, and the use of our canals to the free navigation of the &t. Lawrence river. The people of Ca- nada, finding the St. Lawrence river of very little use to them, are trying to make the people of the United States believe that it is of great value to this country. There is no doubt but that we could make more of it than the Canadians de; but we have a more direct and a better communication with the interior of Canada than half a dozen rivers like the St. Lawrence, and we de not intend to barter away the monopoly of these communications for the free navigation of all the rivers and canals Canada contains.
