City Intelligence. Tue Late Caritas Conviction. —Resrite ron tHe Cox- orunep Man.—In the matter ofllepry Carnell the Swiss eondemned for the murder of old Rosseau, in Dey stecct, and sentenced to be executed on the 2d gf May, Mr. II. L. Clinton, his counsel, has obtained @ respite from the Governor until the 27th of June, in order that time may Le given for the argument on the motion for a new trial pending before the general term of the Supreme Court. MOVING TIME—THE LAWS RELATING TO CARTMEN Vesterday and Tuesday, carts were moving in all di rections, with furniture, und, no doubt, all this week the removals will he very numerous, The number who ‘move before the first of May, instead of on that eventful day. is duily increasing; first, because much of the bus- le of a hurried May day removal (which may be stormy, too) is avoided; and scconily, the removal of furniture costs less, But the majority cannot remove till the woful day, because the heuses they are about to oceu- py will not be vacant till then, But very many delight in the good old orthodox fashion, and would not remove, if they could, on any other day. The removal would Jose half its charms if it did not take place onthe day #acred to confusion, This week the removal of furni- ture will not cost balf as much as next, and, on May day, it will cost four times as much, uotwithstanding « very | stringent law to the contrary. ‘The following are ex- tracts froin the law passed May 14, 1839;— « Furuiture, household, and housing, every load, 93% on all cases where the distance exceeds half a mile, and docs not excced two miles, the cartman shall be en- titled to receive one-third more for every load of the = articles, for every additional half mile he shall cart wtf any cartman shall ask, demand, reevive. tal ko, OX act or extort any greater rate or rates. rp compensa in is expressed and limited in the pro- ' visions of this title, he shall forfeit aud pay the sum of five dollars for every such offence. | “No cartman shall neglect or refuse to cart, or employ his horse and cart or sled, in the tranrportation of any articles whatever, when required, unless he be then ac- | faally otherwise employed, or unless the distance he shall uired to go shall be more than four miles from the Gy at under a penalty of five dollars for every such 5. oavotwithstanding these very explicit provisions, almost every cartman asks, demands, receives, takes, or extorts a greater price ou M ds than specitied by law. and if a greater price ts not im. he will refuse to eart fu niture, in despite of the ae $5 for every such offen mas fuet of the person who employs a cariman, agreeing him. more than the regular price, does not exempt m the fine for receiving it, or entitle him to re- care such excess of price; whereas, if a cartman binds himself by contract to take less than the regular price he is bound by it. and cannot legally charge more, ‘The reason of this is that the cartman knows, or ought to know, what the price is, and acts with his ¢; While the cnployer is aseumed to be ignorant ot it; what he contracts for under such ignorance does not Bind him. It very rarely happens, however, that any person refuses to pay a cartman what he has actually avnen.—The weather yesterday was excesd- It felt very warm, owing to the sudden tran- from the storm of the previous week. | Tue Hanieroy Avenue Fenny.—Itis said that the boats On this ferry will run till If o'clock P.M.
