Sunpay, April 6—6 P.M. ‘The stock murket closed more'buoyant yesterday, than At opened. The-depression in the morning was merely | temporary reaction, which we anticipated. The rise for the few days previous hud been too rapid to be xur- | tained, and it induced many lange holders to realize This brought out a great deal of real stock, and brought 4m a new class of purchasers, This enn by no means be considered an unfuvoruble feature, as it gives greater | strength to the market, by attracting speculators at | higher priovs. There is, therefore, greater necessity for Keeping up the excitement, to enable those who have | More recently come in, to realize a profit. Within the Past week prices have advanced from three to five per | cent, und the transactions have been unusually large An important change has taken place in the position of several of the beaviest operators in the strec some of the largest houses are still bearing the Market with all their strength. The prospect at present is certainly more favorable for them than it was Jest week at this time ; Dut it is our impression that they will make a fatal mistake. There is no doubt but that ‘We are about entering, or rather have entered, upon a Fpeculative movement of considerable importance, and that prices must for a time longer continue to improve. ‘The expansion has been thus fur too rapid; but the pro- Dability is that it will hereafter be slower, and perhaps more permanent. There is yet a moderate margin for anadvance, but it must bo judiciously managed, or it will never be realized. ‘The monthly increase in the receipts of our railroad eompanies, is the surest basis for an improvement in | prices for the stock of each. The receipts of the Harlem Railroad Company for March, 1851, were $42,515 15, eguinst $32,596 25 for the corresponding month last year, showing an increase of $10,018 93, equal to about thirty-two per cent, The inerease in earnings thus far this year, amounts to $27,093 94, equal to $118.75 76, for the year. The estimated increase is $100,000, but | there is no doubt that will be exceeded. The sea- #on for pleasure travelling is about opening, and the probability is that it will this year exceed anything of the kind ever before realized. ‘The resources of the Marlem Railroad have always been underrated. We have been astonished at the large per cent increase in the carnings of the company. The road now termi- nates at a small place inthe interior, and its earnings are derived entirely from its local business. This being the care, what can we not expect in the shape of income when it connects with the great networks of railroads traversing New England, and the northern part of this | # Btate? As soon as the extension is completed to | Chatham Four Corners, the Harlem Company will con- mect with xt leart one thousand miles of railroad, from most of which It will draw more or less business. It would be well enough for those interested to consider Mhese things, before parting with their stock at present prices, The monthly returns of the Norwich and Wor- cester Railroad Company exhibit a steady increase im receipts. In March, 1851, the earnings amounted 1860; showing an increase of $1,531 92, The total in- crease, thus fur this year, has been about five thousand dollars. ‘The prospects of this company are good, on ac- ‘count of its locality and the probability of its connecting with some direet through land route to Boston. A divi- end of four and a baif per cent was made last year out of the net earnings, and the inerease this year has been large enough to insure an equal dividend for 1851. The weeeipts of the Albany and Schnectady Railroad Com- pany have been very large this year, compared with last, In March they amounted to $16,876 17, aguinst $12,311 04 | for the same month in 1860, showing an increase of $4,565 13, equal to thirty-seven per cent. This certainly Jooks well for future dividends, and for a general improve- ment in the financial affairs of the company. All the | New England roads are doing well; in fact, accounts from every section of the country give most favorable re- ports of the prosperity and productiveness of all works internal improvement. Ruilroads are so intimately con- neeted with the progress of the country, that whatever tends to increase population and business tends to in- | crease the productiveness of the works connected with travelling and transportation, The trusters of the Ulinols State Bank have given no- tice that a large lot of lands belonging to that institu- tion will be sold at auction in May, payment for which will be reevived in the outstanding indebtedness of the bank at par. The totul value of the exports to foreign ports, from Beitimore, during the month of March, amounted to $400676 12. The total amount of duties collected at the port, during the month of March, was $118,500 60, against 4.285 60 for the correspendirg month of last year. ‘The total receipts into the United States Depository, at | Baltimore, during the month, amounted to $118,907 60. ‘The balance on band in the depository, on the 28th of February, was $74,602 63, and ou the Sist of March, | $6360 33—+howing the disbursements daring the last month to have reached the sum of $130,000 90, The en- tire rum received at the Baltimore custom house for du- ties, from January 1to March 31, 1801, being the first quarter of the year, was $274.007 08. During the same Period in 1550 the duties collected amounted to only $244,374 23—showing an increase thus far this year, over | 1860, of $20,622 75, ‘The foliowing banks, on the free banking principle, hhave been chartered by the Legislature of Virginia :— ‘The Merchants’ Bank at Lynchburgh, with a capital of ‘wot lees than $500,000, nor more thao $900,000 ; the Cen- tral Bank of Staunton, with a capital of not less than $150,000, nor more than $200,000, Bills for incorporating the following banks on the same Principle, passed the House of Delegates, on Friday, and probably parved the Senate on Saturday:— ‘The Bank of the Old Dominion at Alexandria, with a ‘eapital of not less than $200,000, nor more $500,000, ‘The Traders’ and Mechanic of Norfolk, $150,000 $e $900.000. | The Bank of Commerce at Fredericksburg, pnw $300,000.
