University of New York, Medical Depart- ment, The medical commencement of the New ‘York University was held on Monday evening, at the University edifice, Washington place. A Jarge and brilliant audience had assembled to wit- nees the proceedings. Upon the entrance of the medical faculty into the chapel, the band struck up ‘@ beautiful march, which was admirably executed. The proceedings were then opened by the Rev. Dr. Henry, who read a portion of scripture and of- fered up @ prayer, asking Divine assistance and mn for those who were on the eve of eater- te roy ‘the dlecharne of the duties of the medical ecoet as site Leehicn 1 wg AY Rg trad That et a mecting of the medical faculty of thie University, it aa resolved that the degree of Doc- tor of Medicine be conferred upon the following one hundred hie sixteen graduates: List or Gaspustae- Ant ion Fadl Ale. grid N. ¥.; Berkley, rigas. Having read the names of the gentlemen, Pro- feseor Drareer, by the authority of the University committed to him, then conferred upon them the degree of M. D., in testimony of which, he gave each a diploma. Atthe conclusion of this ceremony, Professor Gross proceeded to deliver the valedictory ora- tion : pe er entering upon the subject of his ae I: dress, he would state that the medical facuit the New York University have recently Bought ‘a Jot of ground on Fourteenth street, upon wi eb they intend to erect an entirely new building. uence ot the annual increase in the nee of lane attending their lectures, their present accommodations have become rather circumscribed and they have therefore been compelled to un- dertake the erection of a new building. The editice, when completed, which may be in autumn, will not be exceeded by’ any similar one in the country. The cost will amount, from seventy-five to seventy.six thousand dollars, aad falls entirely on the medical faculty. By not aeke in, stance, the faculty show that they have confidence in the success of their uadereking The school will be lasting, and not ephe He then adverted to the adv: ‘antages of a medical education in New York, stating that ao other city the Union has so many hospitals and infirma- ries, and can afford the student so many opportu- nities of information. Then addressing himself to the graduates, he said that the pleasing duty had devolved upon bun of welcoming them into the new field of action, in which he had preceded them. He observed, they have now arrived at ae end of their journey, but they must not si that their study has ee here. The marca of t the mind, he said, a, onward; and in order to keep pace “with the progress of en- ligbtenment andeivilization, they must labor hard. Their diploma is nothing more than a passport to the confidence of the public. The occasion which has assembled them, only indicates that the period of their labor has just com- menced, acd that their fature days will be np of restleseness and anxiety. sWhentver they leave their alma mater new difficulties and embarrass- m@nts will preeent themselves. Bat they must bear up, and not be disheartened. They should not be disappointed if their merits should not be instantly reciated by the public, and should not therefore standon their profession. He said that the most Jearned men in their profession have been the Jong. est in being appreciated by the public, and in o! taining their confidence. Every one must bide his time. One of the greatest errors into which young practitioners are apt to tall. the frequent chaage of residence. This is highly prejudicial to their interests and their profession, They should con- ider well where they will take up their residence, nd when once determined, it should not be inde- liberately altered. They should endeavor to culti- vate a fondness for their profession, without which there will be no success. They should cultivate their profession not means of profit and lucre, but as a source of happiness to themselves, and of usefulness to suflering humanity. They should keep aloof from indolence and diseipation, end not throw aaide theig books when they enter into practice. There is plenty of room for study and scleatife in- vestigation in the diflerent branches of their pro fession, and they should maks themselves ac- quainted with the opinions of the most lesraed of their profession. They should never neglect to make a post mortem examination on the bodies un- der their charge. They shoul! respect the natural feelings of parents and relatives; but if they wish fie physician to cure the disease, they should aseist him in his practice. He particularly recom- mended the study of comparative anatomy, which obtaining co much attention in London and Paris. Experiments upon irferior animals should not be neglected. They should endeavor to accustom themselves to punctuality; they should not neglect the poor; they should respect religion. He con- cluded by admonishing them to unintermi dostry, and to build their future distinction on an early cultivation of their profession. The oration was followed by music; after which, Rev. Dr. Henxy pronounced a blessing, when the necembly dispersed.
