It will be seon that a sale of the Convertible Bonds was made to day, at 80)¢ on thine, seller's option, It is the impression of some of our shrewdest eapitaliata, that before the expitation of this year, these bonds will sell at eighty per cent. Many of the purchases yesterday were on apsoulation, by parties who cannot carry them lonz, and depend upen an immediate market. The probability is that mort of them will be disappointed in their calculations im relation to profits. It is said that the rapid aod | pirited sale of these Convertible Bonds” is the best evidence of the confidence entertained by the public generally, ia the future produstiveness of the work and the safety of the investment; but it is our opinion that ninety per cent, for seven per cent hoods, when there are six per cent bonds in the market sell ing at fifteen and twenty per cent above par, doar not show so much confidence im the recurity of the investment as stated. It isto be hoped that the com- pany have finished the manufacture of new classes of bon There are now five distinct classes on the market, and ifthe company have not money enough to complete and equip the road, It would be better to dons other companies do-iseue sorip k for diri- dends, and use the eurpius receipts —in the event of there being any—on the line of work. The Comptroller hi jurities to an amount sufficient to pay one hundred cents on every dellar in circulation, The books of subscription to the capital stock of the Suseex and Warren Railroad Company are to be opened at Columbia, Werren county, on Tueeday, April lst. ‘The capital is $600,000, in shares of $50 each; $5 to be paid at the time of subscribing Recent movements in the coal trade havo drawn public attention to the position of the numerous works of internal improvement conzected with the trans- | portation of the raw material, and considerable anxiety exists relative to the possibility of their sustaining themselves under the competition which is sureto be carried on during the present ecaton. Tho Reading Railroad Company stands at the head of the list of works connected with and depending entirely uponthe coal trade for support. Its immense cost, and enor- mous current expenditures, require an income much greater than that of any other work; and it must, therefore, feel more sensibly any reduction ia the tariff of charges, or competition of any kiad, trom any source, Thus fer this reason the railroad company have had the monopoly of the coal carrying trate from Schuyikill county; and its receipts, compared with the corresponding period last year, chow # handsome increase, But rival works are uow about commencing. operations, and in a few weeks we expect to see a des- perate strug, joing on between them all. It isa well established fact that railroads cannot sucecsstulty compete with canals in the transportation of heavy, | bulky merchandiee, aud in the coal trade the supe- | thority of canals is clearly illustrated. It is tras tha | canals are more subject to disasters from treshets, breaks, &o.; but they ean carry coal so much cheaper | than railroads, that they must, when in navigable | order, command a business, fully equal to their capa, | city, The Reading Railroad Company is about enter~ | ‘Dg upon a season of peril and danger, and we fear the result will be much more disastrous than is g: | rally anticipated. Last year. nothing in the world enabled the company to declare a dividend bat the | unprecedented freshests of July and August, which gave it the monopoly of the carrying busiaess. to the frst of July, 1850, the company had not earned the first cent towards @ dividend. It is yet the im. Pression on the minds of many, that the company did not carn the first cent towards a dividend on last year’s business. For the present year, the prospeet it by no means promising, aod for the purpose of pre- senting a feir view of the tratic operations of the company, we have made out an estimate of the proba+ ble earnings and expenditures for 1851. It will be seen by this that « dividend anything like the last + entirely out of the quertion, Nothing but two or three trerhets like those of last eummer can rave the company froma supenseion of dividends, and from @ great increase in its construction ascount:— Reavixne Rarnoao—Ketimare ron 1851, Income Allow tor the transportation ot 1,200,000 toas of coal, at the average rate of $1 25 per ton, deduct buck on what is shipped to N | | | | | | | , ame as Total... sees ’ pinses E Oa coal, 62 11.100 cents per ton Merchandive and paveengers Dumpage. €44 conte per wn, ° Missing coal sundries, like lnct year. Thie is, in our opinion a fair estimate for the present year. Beyond this, two hundred and fifty thousand dollare would be required to psy a dividend of nix per cemt om the old stock. This would require a gross income above thet put down im the estimate of at least five hundred thourand dollars, A gross income of two mil- Hons and # half of dollars would hardly suffise to pay current expenses interest on indebtedness, dividend on preferred stock, and dividend on the old stock.
