NEWS BY THE MAILS. Our Washington Correspondence. Wasuinoton, Feb. 16, 1951. The South and the Slavery Adjustment—Virginia Nom Intercourse—Soath Carolina and Secession the Sowshern Democratic Ultras ‘The Prendential Question. It is the general belief that the slavery questions are all settled. It is supposed, over nine-tenths of compromiges of the last session will do, and that the Union and the confidence of the South. To make them quite complete—to relieve the North ana the South, at the same time, of the inconve- lence of free Dlacks—it is proposed to bring the ‘Treasury to the support ot the colonization cause. But the ultras of the South are not yet appeased. ‘The non-intereourse socienes in Virginia, and the + pirit of secession in South Carolina, are still alive enodactive It was the resolutions of Virginia, in 1547-48, that led the Southern States to the ex- treme position which they assumed in Coagreas oe the Compromise scheme of Mr. Clay. re can be no doubt that the counsels of Vir- ginia influenced the action of South Carolina her- Sell, and the action of Mississippi in calling a Southera Convention at Nashville. lastigated by the prudent old Commonwealth, her weaker and younger sister ©" he South, following her exam- ple, sufiered they ardor to run away with their discretion; ana vo they turn to Virginia and ask, What are We tod) | Shall we stand by or stand off from South Carolina? Jul since the ae of the peace measures, not one of the uthern States appears to have maiviaiaed her poeition upon the Nashville recommendatione, ex- cept South Carolina. She has just held anelec- tion tor a Convention of herown; not to discuss, but to act, upon the question of secession. Follow- ‘ing this loca! convention, the original idea was a congress of the Southern Sates, to consult upon the ways and means of dissolving the Union in the most quiet, economical and expeditious manner. This congress, it is now apparent, will not be held; nor does it appear likely that there will be any further vonventions on the part of the Southern ‘States, or of any of them, except South Carolina, | in reference to resistance of the compromise mea- sures of the last session.
