The poara have paid $30,700 of ninety days. There remains $24, 600, which is im course of liquidation out of means in thelr porsese: The company Will thus be free from debt within a skort time. Maco the debt is dise! the Teoaipte from the p will be paid to the stockholders in the form, ‘ot ei idends. These seacipte, which should jucrease with the general prosperity aud advance of population, will be obtained from the fol- Joy Qd—stoue quarries; tonnage on canal and basin wer; Lang foils fee bridge and fer rent of land. jease of lots. ‘Be resolved, vy sell three theusand lots (3,000) in cele to suft purohasers, and receive the stock of this company at par in pay- ment forthe same. The sale is advertised to take eel ip this city on the 16th day of April next, by A. Moller, auctiourer, and the company de- Hire to call the | particular attention ot the etcckbolders to it. The lots will be select- ed frem different parte of the property, and maps ill be furnished previously to the sale, mn, by appraisement, will po! ach lot. to assist purchasers iu forming an opinion of their true value. This sale. and the early probable improvements on many of these lots. will render the remaining lots more valuable, and the property more Productive The stock received at the sale in pay- ment for lots will be cancelled, and the capital reduced to that extent The company have made a contract wite H. W. Fish, of Pittsburgh, who bas agreed to place manufactories ou the western portion ot the ground, and thus concentrate upon it within « short period a large populaticn. From this contract, and others under contideration, the board expect to receive wuch benefit within the prerevt year. ‘The offic of the company is at 55 Merchants’ Exchenge, wh formation will be given to the stockhold time. By orger of the Board of Directors COURTLAND PALMER, President. EXThie poste those interested in the stock up to the Jateet moment, and gives a very satisfactory account of the affeirs of the company, There bas been con- siderable speculation in the stock during the past three months, and the advance in prices has been considerable, Notwithstan ing this, hold fe not Gispored to sell; and those most intimately acquainted ‘with the position and prospects of the company, have ‘Deen the largest purchasers. These landed companies have become favorite investments with a certain class of capitalists, who prefer them to any other, not ‘only on account of the nature and security of the in- ‘vo tment, but of the facility for division of the pro- perty, from time .to time, among thore interested as stockholders. It will be seen that the Portsmouth Com) any have wade arcangements for selling at aus- tion alarge number of lots, payment for which will be received in stock. This will enable stockholders to eecure a] more direct interest in the property ofthe compapy, and make it an object to improve what lots they may own, thereby increasing the value of whatever etock may be outstanding. Woon we look atthe rise and progress of our large western eities and compare the location of most of them to Portas mouth, the natural conclusion is, that # few years will suffice to make that one of the most prominent points on the Ohio river, Its growth has,j thus far, becn most rapid, aud lots purchased there, favorably located, must annually increase in value @ greater per cent than in any other place in the State of Ohio. Its manufacturing advantages are reprosent- ed as being unlimited, and of any required power its mineral resources of the most valuable and desira- Die cherecter; and for mecbanical and manufacturing perruits it is second to no other im the valley of the Ohio river. The letter of the President of the com- pany, given above, tells the whole story, and we re. commend a careful perusal by every stockholder. A large number of the dry goods jobbers, grocers, @nd other wholesale dealers with the country, have associated themrelves to rid the city of the iatolerabl, burthen of the depreciated paper currency with which the community is conetantly deluged by the country banks, and by the discount on which our people are annually fleeced to the amount of several millions of dollars. A new institution has been organized under the title of the Bank of the Metropolis. James McUall, ‘well known as a successtul merchant of high character, will be the Prerident, and with him some of the most prominent merchants and capitalists of the city are associated. The Bank of the Metropolis commences Operations with a capital of $2,000,000, acd will per- yorm the same peculiar functions here that the Suffolk County Bank does s0 beneficially at Boston, compel- jing the country banks to redeem their bills in this city iw specie at par. The operation of this will be a: wholerome and profitable tothe sound coustry banks as to the people, for it will render their notes as univer. sally accepteble throughout the Union as those of New York city ban! and the result will be that the note of a bank in St. Lawrence county or Buffalo, will be good currency in California, Oregon, Panama, andin Canton. No honest banker cau suffer by it; but it will put an end to all swindlers like those of the Plainfield, Ulster, Lehigh, and other shinplaster factories of that ilk, by which certain notorious cha- racters have so long pillaged the laboring classes of thi city vut ef a large portion of their hard earned weekly wages, Under the general banking law, a host of b. have started up in obscure nooks of the country, the names of which are not to be found om any map, and b never been heard of in the city till they make their sppesrance on the dubious looking notes which bear them, Many of these country banks are mere fictions, having no real location except in the cellar of the broker or broken epeculator, in this city, who. as the pretended “agent” of the bank, redeems the notes at adiscount. There will now be a complete stoppage of these abuses. The city oapital employed in banking will all be liable for the redemption of every dollar of paper woney irrued upon it, without distinction in fs of those who prectice under cover of these sham “ coun- try banks the whole community will have the benefit of a currency instantly redeemable im gold and silver, without discount.
