Strike Among the Coal Heavers-—A Riot Frustrated—The Female Jack Sheppord, $c. The first serious disturbance that has occurred for some months, broke out this morning at the terminus ot the Reading Railroad, at Richmond, in consequence of @ dispute between the men employed coal heavers and their employers, about wages. When bu- siness was brisk, some time since, the men struck for higher wages, and the coal dealers advanced the price per hour, so that if they were employed all day they could make $1 25, Now that the ship- ments are not se heavy, because the river is ob- structed with ice, the employers reduced the; price to the former rate. The men struck against this, and the employers hired other hands; but when they attempted to go to work yesterday, those unemployed drove them of. The coal dealers expecting further disturbances, notified Marehal Keyser of the state of aftuire leat evening, and he this morning proceeded to Richmond with about fitty ot his men, detailed from the various divisions. On arriving at the wharves, the rebellious coalheavers were found, numbering about five hundred, drawn up in @ regular mod, and received ‘the police with hootings, and scme picked Lap missiles te thsew. "The Marchal oxpasinianel with tents, and arked them to di Pi cbarge aud captured about twenty of the most sturdy brawlers. The prisoners were lodged in the Richmond station house; but durin e march thither, several attempts were made at rescue, which, however, only enabied the police to increase the number cf prisoners to about twenty-five. Atf- ter posting a guard at the lock-up, the Marshal it turbance, id after i" the riot act, and warped them that his men were all armed, and he would be co ed to fire upon them if they did not immediately disperse. ‘The: moved off slowly,” and up to the present time hare mot committed any overt act. The Marshal's police left im the city were all summoned to the spot by the ringing of the North- ern Liberties Hall bell The disposition to riot has doubtless been checked by the prompt measures of the Marsbal. The Mayor will keep a large body of police on the ground during the night; consequently, no fur- ded placed on trial, this morning, for involuntary manslaughter, in having eaused the | death of an oged female by driving « Faliroad car over | her. Tue Vorcano av Tue Great Saut Laxe.—A correspondent of the Buffalo Commercial Adver- twer gives the following description of a volcano in the vicinity of the prea, Salt Lake :—* This vol- cano is ina plain of mud, and on the borders of the Lake. It is composed of mud, and covers several acres. Steam and water are escaping from some half dozen apertures. The mud is raised up into cones, the highest not five feet from the gene- ral surface. They are terminated By ibe some hardened and lined with crystals of sulphur and other substances. One of the cones throws steam and water tenor fifteen feet into the air. Ites- capes rapidly and with a sound resembling the es- cape of steam from. the pipe of a small steam en- gine, and it ejects hot and cold water at short in- tervals. One cauldron, some four feet across, boils up until it overflows, then sinks several feet, and again overflows. Nothing is seen buta mass of foam; the water is strongly impregnated with sal-ammonia. ‘There are other cauldrons, from ten to twenty feet in diameter, filled to within three or four feet with boiling mud, whick is occasion- ally thrown out in every direction. About a mile further off ia mother collection of mud cones, and on the op side an island of volcanic rocks rises to the ‘he ht of By feet; at the foot of it is salt in sheets, scones impregnated with sal- ammonia ; that from the lake is pure, and is used by the Californians. In the vicinity of the volea- no we saw several ledges covered with pumice, end we met with it in various other places on the planes.” Souru Caroiina anp THE Brrrish GovERNMENT.
